Book Characterization of Critical Fundamental Aging Mechanisms of High Temperature Polymer Matrix Composites

Download or read book Characterization of Critical Fundamental Aging Mechanisms of High Temperature Polymer Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program investigated durability and potential critical fundamental aging mechanisms of the high temperature polymer matrix carbon fiber composites, especially crosslinked bismaleimide(BMI) thermosets and thermoplastic polyimide(PI) for the future applications in commercial and military aircraft. The studies involved combined stress, temperature, thermal cycling or thermal spike, moisture, time and oxygen service environment exposure which could lead to complex synergistic environmental-induced degradation mechanisms of composite performance and their critical physical and chemical aging mechanisms in terms of damage initiation and propagation on the molecular, microscopic and macroscopic structural levels in order to develop structural-performance phase diagrams for mechanics model-structural design analyses and associated materials structural optimization at all dimensional levels. Extensive and systematic studies involved two fundamental aging mechanisms, namely (i) the characterization of cure of BMI

Book Structural Characterization of High Temperature Composites

Download or read book Structural Characterization of High Temperature Composites written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glass, ceramic, and carbon matrix composite materials have emerged in recent years with potential properties and temperature resistance which make them attractive for high temperature applications such as gas turbine engines. At the outset of this study, only flexural tests were available to evaluate brittle matrix composites at temperatures in the 600 to 1000 C range. The results are described of an ongoing effort to develop appropriate tensile, compression, and shear test methods for high temperature use. A tensile test for unidirectional composites was developed and used to evaluate the properties and behavior of ceramic fiber reinforced glass and glass-ceramic matrix composites in air at temperatures up to 1000 C. The results indicate generally efficient fiber reinforcement and tolerance to matrix cracking similar to polymer matrix composites. Limiting properties in these materials may be an inherently very low transverse strain to failure, and high temperature embrittlement due to fiber/matrix interface oxidation. Mandell, J. Book Carbon Fiber Composite Characterization in Adverse Thermal Environments

Download or read book Carbon Fiber Composite Characterization in Adverse Thermal Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of carbon fiber aircraft composites was studied in adverse thermal environments. The effects of resin composition and fiber orientation were measured in two test configurations: 102 by 127 millimeter (mm) test coupons were irradiated at approximately 22.5 kW/m2 to measure thermal response, and 102 by 254 mm test coupons were irradiated at approximately 30.7 kW/m2 to characterize piloted flame spread in the vertically upward direction. Carbon-fiber composite materials with epoxy and bismaleimide resins, and uni-directional and woven fiber orientations, were tested. Bismaleimide samples produced less smoke, and were more resistant to flame spread, as expected for high temperature thermoset resins with characteristically lower heat release rates. All materials lost approximately 20-25% of their mass regardless of resin type, fiber orientation, or test configuration. Woven fiber composites displayed localized smoke jetting whereas uni-directional composites developed cracks parallel to the fibers from which smoke and flames emanated. Swelling and delamination were observed with volumetric expansion on the order of 100% to 200%. The purpose of this work was to provide validation data for SNL's foundational thermal and combustion modeling capabilities.

Book Fiber Reinforced Composites

Download or read book Fiber Reinforced Composites written by Kuruvilla Joseph and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-20 with total page 908 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer-based fibre-reinforced composites FRC's have now come out as a major class of structural materials being used or regarded as substituent's for metals in several critical components in space, automotive and other industries (marine, and sports goods) owing to their low density, strength-weight ratio, and fatigue strength. FRC's have several commercial as well as industrial applications ranging from aircraft, space, automotive, sporting goods, marine, and infrastructure. The above-mentioned applications of FRC's clearly reveal that FRC's have the potential to be used in a broad range of different engineering fields with the added advantages of low density, and resistance to corrosion compared to conventional metallic and ceramic composites. However, for scientists/researchers/R&D's to fabricate FRC's with such potential there should be careful and precise design followed by suitable process development based on properties like mechanical, physical, and thermal that are unique to each application. Hence the last few decades have witnessed considerable research on fibre reinforced composites. Fibre Reinforced Composites: Constituents, Compatibility, Perspectives and Applications presents a widespread all-inclusive review on fibre-reinforced composites ranging from the different types of processing techniques to chemical modification of the fibre surface to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the matrix and fibre and the structure-property relationship. It illustrates how high value composites can be produced by efficient and sustainable processing methods by selecting different constituents [fibres and resins]. Researchers in academia working in composites and accompanying areas [materials characterisation] and industrial manufacturers who need information on composite constituents and how they relate to each other for a certain application will find the book extremely useful when they need to make decisions about materials selection for their products. - Focuses on the different types of FRC's that are currently available (e.g. from polymeric matrices to metallic and ceramic matrices, from carbon fibre to different types of natural fibres and from short to long fibre reinforced), their processing techniques, characterization of different properties, and how to improve the interfacial adhesion between an incompatible fibre and matrix and their applications - Looks at crisis areas such as how to incorporate incompatible fibres and matrices together (e.g. Non-polar polypropylene matrix is not compatible with that of polar natural fibres and hence suitable surface modifications are required to make them compatible with each other) along with low cost processing methods, low density and high strength - Uncovers clarifications to both elementary and practical problems related to the fabrication of FRCs - Schematic representations depicting the interaction between different fibre types and matrices will be provided in some chapters

Book Enhancing Carbon Fibre Production Through Life Cycle Analysis

Download or read book Enhancing Carbon Fibre Production Through Life Cycle Analysis written by Thomas Groetsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-10-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to streamline analysis of process and material variations in carbon fibre manufacturing, focusing on large-scale continuous production. It reports on a modular LCA concept based on accepted international standards and an in-depth analysis of carbon fibre manufacture. This streamlined assessment approach considers material flows and properties, and generated emissions, throughout the manufacturing process. Further, four manufacturing scenarios for optimizing material throughput are discussed, highlighting trade-offs between production rate, material properties, environmental impact, and cost. In turn (“Subsequently” or a synonym may be more suitable here as this part is not directly linked to what is described in the previous sentence), the evaluation of three precursor materials, traditional PAN, textile-grade PAN, and an experimental bio-based lignin-cellulose blend is described. The strengths and weaknesses, like processability and cost efficiency, of each material are outlined in detail. Overall, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the effect process and material variations have on carbon fiber manufacture. It also showcases methodologies to optimize these industrial processes for a sustainable production on a large scale.
