This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture and Properties of Iron and Steel I have compared at some length the condition of the industry in each separate country. These descriptions of the various dis tricts or provinces are not intended as complete investigations. It would be impossible for instance to describe the American districts so fully that every engineer and metallurgist of our country would find all the information he might wish, or even find a record of all that he already knows. It would also be impossible to tell an Eng lish engineer much about those parts of his own country with which he is acquainted. It may be possible, however, to give some facts for the benefit of travelers; to clear the way for a foreigner visit ing America, or an American visiting other lands. It 'is for this purpose only that these articles have been written and their end will be accomplished if they furnish certain fundamental facts on which to base such a journey. Some readers might prefer that less space should be devoted to theoretical matter and more to descriptions and drawings of fur naces and apparatus, but in my opinion the place for such informa tion is in the trade periodicals. It takes so long to print a book like this that the drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, and every year that it stands upon the shelf it becomes more and more a catalogue of discarded devices, while on the other hand the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same from year to year, and their value knows no depreciation. Book Iron and Steel

Download or read book Iron and Steel written by William Henry Greenwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel: Their Sources, Varieties, Properties, and Manufacture, With Numerous Engravings and Diagrams Cementation is a process in which a metal is made to take up a solid element, by being heated with it. In the metallurgy of Iron the principal example Is the carburising of malleable-iron, and the production of steel, by the prolonged exposure of the iron at a temperature below fusion, to the action of solid carbon. A similar action may go on in the blast furnace where the freshly reduced iron is in contact with the carbon of the fuel. Cold-short expresses a condition of iron or other metal in which when it is worked by hammering or rolling at or below a dull red-heat the edges crack or fracture according to the degree of the cold-shortness; perhaps such metal may be worked with the utmost facility at a higher temperature. Small quantities of phosphorus, silicon, arsenic, and antimony induce cold-shortness in iron or steel, phosphorus being the most common cause of this defect. Book Iron and Steel Classic Reprint

Download or read book Iron and Steel Classic Reprint written by J. H. Stansbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel Iron is the most important of all the metals that have been pressed into the service of man, which is due, not only to its great abundance in Nature, but also to its unique properties. The result of this is that no one metal has received so much attention from both practical men and scientists, as is shown by the fact that some of the most prominent men in Europe and America are investigating the many chemical and physical properties of the metal and its application to the requirements of civilisation. Thus an enormous mass of information has accumulated, and is to be found in original papers and books. Portions of the subject are still in their youth and are growing vigorously, so that the teacher of to-day must become the student of to-morrow. On the other hand, parts of it are so old that their origin is lost in the mists of time, and dates back to the first glimmerings of that intelligence which now enables man to utilise to the fullest extent the valuable properties of the metal.
