Book The Manufacture and Properties of Iron and Steel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Manufacture and Properties of Iron and Steel Classic Reprint written by Harry Huse Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture and Properties of Iron and Steel I have compared at some length the condition of the industry in each separate country. These descriptions of the various dis tricts or provinces are not intended as complete investigations. It would be impossible for instance to describe the American districts so fully that every engineer and metallurgist of our country would find all the information he might wish, or even find a record of all that he already knows. It would also be impossible to tell an Eng lish engineer much about those parts of his own country with which he is acquainted. It may be possible, however, to give some facts for the benefit of travelers; to clear the way for a foreigner visit ing America, or an American visiting other lands. It 'is for this purpose only that these articles have been written and their end will be accomplished if they furnish certain fundamental facts on which to base such a journey. Some readers might prefer that less space should be devoted to theoretical matter and more to descriptions and drawings of fur naces and apparatus, but in my opinion the place for such informa tion is in the trade periodicals. It takes so long to print a book like this that the drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, and every year that it stands upon the shelf it becomes more and more a catalogue of discarded devices, while on the other hand the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same from year to year, and their value knows no depreciation. Download or read book Hydrogen in Steel written by Michael Smialowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen in Steel: Effect of Hydrogen on Iron and Steel During Production, Fabrication, and Use focuses on the effect of hydrogen on iron and steel during production, fabrication, and use. Topics covered range from the solubility of hydrogen in iron and ferrous alloys to the diffusion and permeation of hydrogen through iron and steel. Electrochemical problems related to the ability of iron to absorb hydrogen from aqueous solutions are also considered. Comprised of 19 chapters, this book begins with a detailed treatment of the nature and properties of metal-hydrogen systems, paying particular attention to the behavior of hydrogen in the bulk of the metal phase and the mechanism of reactions between metals and hydrogen or hydrogen-producing compounds. The reader is then introduced to the solubility of hydrogen in iron and ferrous alloys as well as the nature of the final product of the hydrogen-iron interaction. Subsequent chapters deal with dimensional changes and stresses produced in steel by cathodically evolved hydrogen; the effects of hydrogen on the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of iron and steel; influence of welding on hydrogen; and sulfide corrosion cracking of steel. The effects of pickling on steel are also examined, along with the blistering and embrittlement caused by hydrogen on the base metal during electroplating. This book will be of value to students and practitioners in the field of physical chemistry.

Book Iron and Steel

Download or read book Iron and Steel written by William F. Hosford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended both as a resource for engineers and as an introduction to the layman about our most important metal system. After an introduction that deals with the history and refining of iron and steel, the rest of the book examines their physical properties and metallurgy. To elaborate on the importance of iron and steel, we can refer to the fact that modern civilization as we know it would not be possible without it. Steel is essential in the machinery necessary for manufacturing that meets our needs. Even the words themselves have come to suggest strength. Phrases such as 'iron willed', 'iron fisted', 'iron clad', 'iron curtain' and 'pumping iron' imply strength. A 'steely glance' is a stern look. 'A heart of steel' refers to a very hard demeanor. The Russian dictator, Stalin (which means steel in Russian), chose the name to invoke fear in those under him.
