Book Jesus the Mantra of God

Download or read book Jesus the Mantra of God written by John R. Dupuche and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus, Mantra of God explores the practice of the mantra in prayer. It comes out of the style of meditative prayer initiated by John Main and continued by his disciple Dom Laurence Freeman, OSB and the World Community for Christian Meditation. At the heart of this prayer is the Indian concept of mantra - focus upon a word or phrase of spiritual significance. The mantra, says John Dupuche, 'is like a key to unlock the storeroom from which the disciple of the kingdom brings forth things both new and old' (Matthew 13:52). The first part of the book enriches the reader's understanding and practice of the mantra, based on faith, and looks at the related aspects of hearing, breathing and the body. With this heightened understanding, the practitioner comes more fully to see the face of Christ, who is the divine Mantra, and so enter into the silence of God. The second part examines the intimate relationship between mantra-meditation and the cycle of the liturgical year. In meditation, one can relive the events of the sacred story or deepen the spiritual impact of the major festivals of the Church's year. A brief appendix deals with visualization, another aspect of contemplative prayer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Wilkinson's best-selling book, 'The Prayer of Jabez, ' is so popular with Evangelicals it just had to be bad. Wilkinson told us to be gimpers for God; Jones shows us how to be kippers for God. In this parody the conservative Christian author allows humor to reveal the more ridiculous assumptions driving the original book. Each chapter of the original is turned inside out so that we can really see what's being said. Though the parody is rather ruthless in its humor, it is not hopelessly cynical just for the sake of mockery. It points to a more constructive vision, a vision of Christianity's inherent riches of truth, beauty, and goodness that the original Jabez book passively trivializes. Get this parody for the laughs; get it for something greater.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God, do you hear me? If we're honest, that's a sentiment we’ve all shared. Prayer can be challenging and confusing. Often we feel abandoned, betrayed, and anxious. We don't know what to pray for, we don't know the words to say, and sometimes it just feels like there's no one on the other side. Through the pages of this book, pastor and bestselling author Derwin Gray will journey with you, in learning and living the prayer that God always answers. This prayer is commonly called the Lord’s Prayer (Matt 6:9-13). The Lord's Prayer is the firm foundation God uses to build our lives on the Rock. It will help you break through to a completely new and refreshing prayer life. Along this journey, you'll learn several things about prayer: Prayer is the secret place where we find God waiting for us. Prayer is the door we enter to discover God’s heart of unending grace. Prayer is the home we have always wanted, where we can crawl into our Father’s lap and find our purpose. Prayer is not about getting God to give us stuff. It is about becoming who we were made to be: a reflection of Jesus in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chanting the psalms, or psalmody, is an ancient practice of vital importance in the Christian spiritual tradition. Today many think of it as a discipline that belongs only in monasteries—but psalmody is a spiritual treasure that is available to anyone who prays. You don’t need to be musical or a monk to do it, and it can be enjoyed in church liturgical worship, in groups, or even individually as part of a personal rule of prayer. Cynthia Bourgeault brings the practice into the twenty-first century, providing a history of Christian psalmody as well as an appreciation of its place in contemplative practice today. And she teaches you how to do it as you chant along with her on the accompanying CD in which she demonstrates the basic techniques and easy melodies that anyone can learn. “Even if you can’t read music,” Cynthia says, “or if somewhere along the way you’ve absorbed the message that your voice is no good or you can’t sing on pitch, I’ll still hope to show you that chanting the psalms is accessible to nearly everyone.”

Book The Cloud of Unknowing

Download or read book The Cloud of Unknowing written by William Johnston and published by Image. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING and THE BOOK OF PRIVY COUNSELING are the first explorations in the English language of the soul’s quest for God. Written in Middle English by an unknown fourteenth-century mystic, THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING expresses with beauty a message that has inspired such great religious thinkers as St. John of the Cross and Teilhard de Chardin, as well as countless others in search of God. Offering a practical guide to the life of contemplation, the author explains that ordinary thoughts and earthly concepts must be buried beneath a “cloud of forgetting,” while our love must rise toward a God hidden in the “cloud of unknowing.” THE BOOK OF PRIVY COUNSELING, also included in this volume, is a short and moving text on the way to enlightenment through a total loss of self and a consciousness only of the divine. William Johnston, an authority on fourteenth-century mysticism and spirituality, provides an accessible discussion of the works, detailing what is known about the history of the texts and their author. In a new foreword, Huston Smith draws on his extensive knowledge of the varieties of religious experience to illuminate the relevance of these works for contemporary readers.
