Download or read book The Mansion on Hummingbird Hill written by J. Beauhall and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stately mansion sits atop the crest of Hummingbird Hill on the outskirts of Big Spring, Texas. This is the tale of that mansion and the trials and tribulations experienced by its inhabitants over the years, as it goes from the family home of James “Buck” Henderson and his wife, June, to one of the South’s most elegant “sporting” houses, to a home for runaways, and finally, a family home again. It is a tale of love, hate, rape, incest, murder, and intrigue. The story begins with Buck Henderson’s early years in Philadelphia, to his heroism during World War I, his battlefield promotions and medals for bravery, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, his recovery in a Denver hospital, and his marriage to June. After securing an engineering degree at Penn State, Buck and June set out for Big Spring, Texas, where they find success in the oil field supply business and raise a family, but their happiness is followed by rape, murder, and the sale of their beloved mansion.

Book excerpt: It is the opening day at Hummingbird Hill, Maxi Taylor's Bed and Breakfast. As the first guest arrives, Maxi hears a scream from the backyard and finds Hannah with a puppy that she feels is dying. Assured that the puppy will be all right, Hannah's plea to keep the puppy is complicated by a boy who arrives to claim that the Collie puppy is his. Maxi's daughter Lorene arrives and concern for the puppy shifts to the boy, Trevor, obviously malnourished and in fear of being sent back to the puppy-mill foster home from which he had recently fled. A trip to the puppy mill with a social worker finds the house and barn that housed the dogs burned to the ground. Touched by Trevor's plight and in a few months expecting a child of her own, Lorene ignores the concerns of the family as she seeks to become Trevor's foster parent. Many complications lie ahead for Maxi Taylor, her family, and friends, as Trevor seeks to find his 'forever home'. (A 'forever home's the term animal shelters use as they find a permanent home for those in their care.)

Book excerpt: The young Mazie Westcott returns to Black Mountain after the death of her grandmother to attend to her affairs. Those affairs include an old delipidated house, and the four long-time friends of her grandmothers living there. Mazie soon discovers the four old folks are full of surprises and secrets, family secrets. Mazie had only know Emily Westcott as "Grans," but the discovery of an old hat box in her grandmother's closet introduces her to a woman she hand only thought she had known. Left with more questions than answers, Mazie turns to the four self-proclaimed "Coffin dodgers" that had been by her grandmothers' side for decades. They had the answers she needed. All she had to do was keep them out of jail, and the marijuana patch long enough to tell their story! As if dealing with four recycled teenagers wasn't tricky enough, complicating matters even further was Landon Mackey. He was a gorgeous, young contractor that quickly won over the hearts of everyone on Hummingbird Hill and who was steadily pushing Mazie toward a line she had vowed to never cross. She had never allowed a man to interfere with business, and she wasn't about to start now. If only he wasn't so damn handsome and kind and funny, and everything she had ever wanted in a man! As the skeletons from one woman's life are dug up, another is forced to reexamine everything she thought she knew to be true about her own. Secrets will com to light, rules will be broken and hearts will be put on the line on Hummingbird Hill.

Book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Download or read book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil written by John Berendt and published by Random House. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Book The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane

Download or read book The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane written by Lisa See and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa See explores the lives of a Chinese mother and her daughter who has been adopted by an American couple. Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate—the first automobile any of them have seen—and a stranger arrives. In this remote Yunnan village, the stranger finds the rare tea he has been seeking and a reticent Akha people. In her biggest seller, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, See introduced the Yao people to her readers. Here she shares the customs of another Chinese ethnic minority, the Akha, whose world will soon change. Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence. When she has a baby outside of wedlock, rather than stand by tradition, she wraps her daughter in a blanket, with a tea cake hidden in her swaddling, and abandons her in the nearest city. After mother and daughter have gone their separate ways, Li-yan slowly emerges from the security and insularity of her village to encounter modern life while Haley grows up a privileged and well-loved California girl. Despite Haley’s happy home life, she wonders about her origins; and Li-yan longs for her lost daughter. They both search for and find answers in the tea that has shaped their family’s destiny for generations. A powerful story about a family, separated by circumstances, culture, and distance, Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane paints an unforgettable portrait of a little known region and its people and celebrates the bond that connects mothers and daughters.
