Book excerpt: "In many ways," Waller R. Newell writes, "young men today are in deep spiritual trouble. But they are also yearning for a way back to the noblest ideals of American manhood." The Code of Man represents a deep and thought-provoking effort to help guide contemporary men back to those ideals, as embodied in what Newell calls the five paths to manliness: love, courage, pride, family, and country. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, he argues, we have grown so concerned about the roles of sex and violence in our society that we have forgotten the older virtues: romance and eros, courage and patriotism, the blend of love and bravery it takes to raise a family. In The Code of Man, he exhorts us to look to the traditional virtues of the past for inspiration. Contrasting the time-honored lessons of traditional voices -- Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln, Jane Austen and Teddy Roosevelt -- with the chaotic signals emanating from sources like Eminem, video games like Thrill Kill, and Goth culture, Newell illustrates how we have come to associate courage with violence, "transgression" with wisdom. Most disturbing, he argues, the essential triumph of Western culture may have left us with a building reserve of untapped aggressive energy, and no consensus about how to channel it -- a situation that threatens to weaken us at the core. Seamlessly weaving together literary references from a diverse body of sources, Waller Newell offers an open-eyed look at what it means to be a man in America today, and a clarion call to recapture our traditions if we are to preserve our character as a society ... and avoid catastrophe.

Book Breaking the Male Code

Download or read book Breaking the Male Code written by Robert Garfield and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calling for a new men’s movement, a noted psychotherapist examines the critical role close male friendships play in helping men lead happy, healthy lives. For much of the past century, men have operated under the rules of Male Code, a rigid set of guidelines that equate masculinity with stoicism, silence, and strength. As men’s roles have changed over the past few decades, this lingering pressure to hide their emotions has wreaked havoc on men’s lives. Lacking the ability to communicate their needs, desires, and feelings effectively, they are more likely to suffer from depression, anger, and isolation, and their relationships often suffer. Noted psychotherapist Rob Garfield has worked with men struggling with emotional issues for more than forty years. Through his “Friendship Labs,” clinical settings in which men engage in group therapy, he teaches men how to identify inner conflicts, express emotions, and communicate openly. According to Garfield, traditional therapy has largely marginalized men since many lack the tools to properly engage. But when men learn to open up to other men who share similar experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives, they not only build lasting bonds but learn the skills necessary to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Writing with empathy and authority, Garfield examines the unique challenges men face and urges them to abandon male code in favor of a masculinity that integrates traditional male traits with emotional intimacy skills. He urges men to connect with other men using the Four C’s of intimacy—connection, communication, commitment, and co-operation—to form meaningful bonds. Drawing on real-life stories and original research, he shows how their friendships can serve as the foundation on which men can build and sustain deep relationships with all of their loved ones—including spouses, children, and parents—and in turn lead to happier, healthier lives.

Book The Lewis Guide To Deciphering The Man Code

Download or read book The Lewis Guide To Deciphering The Man Code written by Jeff Todd and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a code that most folks from the male species live by that is given to us from birth. It's not written down anywhere for us to read, study and practice. It's more like a chemical - it's part of our chromosomes and DNA - that flows through our bodies, our blood and brains. It tells us how we should act in all situations, how we should think and how to express ourselves in our environments. It's like a survival mechanism created just for men.Being a man in this world means living by the man code. We are judged by our fellow men that we socialize with daily. They will give you strange looks when you attempt to do something that is considered 'not manly'. You can be shunned from the manly community and lose your imaginary 'man card' for doing anything that only females are known to do. Following the man code is a serious thing.Since there is not a written document in place, we have to ask, "Where did this 'man code' come from? Where did it originate? And what exactly is in there?" And because if there is no written document, who's to say that it didn't get changed along the way? Maybe this man code that men have been living by for hundreds of years is wrong. What then?Today, we take a closer look at this 'man code' and compare it to what the Bible says. The Bible has been around for hundreds of years and is one of the ways God, our Creator, communicates with us. Maybe we can discover what He intends for us, as men, to really be. I mean, He created man and had the original plan for manhood - that would make Him the only source we should really look to and we can find the details in the Bible. My prayer today is that we can learn something from this guide about ourselves - the good, the bad and the ugly - and apply what we receive from God's Word to our lives. I hope that we make the appropriate steps to become better people - better men. I believe that God has a perfect plan for us and wants us to live productive lives. He wants us to have great relationships with our wives, kids, families and friends.

Book He Knew She was Right

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jane Nardin
  • Publisher : SIU Press
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 9780809314843
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book He Knew She was Right written by Jane Nardin and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trollope’s mother, wife, and a friend he loved platonically most of his life provided him three very different views of the Victorian woman. And, according to Jane Nardin, they were responsible for the dramatic shift in his treatment of women in his novels. This is the first book in Sandra Gilbert’s Ad Feminam series to examine a male author. Nardin initially analyzes the novels Trollope wrote from 1855 to 1861, in which male concerns are central to the plot and women are angelic heroines, submissive and self-sacrificing. Even the titles of his novels written during this period are totally male oriented. The Three Clerks, Doctor Thorne, and The Bertrams all refer to men. Shortly after meeting Kate Field, Trollope wrote Orley Farm, which refers to the estate an angry woman steals from her husband and which marks a change in the attitudes toward women evident in his novels. His next four books, The Small House at Allington, Rachel Ray, Can You Forgive Her?, and Miss Mackenzie, prove that women’s concerns had become central in his writing. Nardin examines specific novels written from 1861 to 1865 in which Trollope, with increasing vigor, subverts the conventional notions of gender that his earlier novels had endorsed. Nardin argues that his novels written after 1865 and often recognized as feminist are not really departures but merely refinements of attitudes Trollope exhibited in earlier works.

Book Introduction to Geopolitics

Download or read book Introduction to Geopolitics written by Colin Flint and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear and concise introductory textbook guides students through their first engagement with geopolitics. It offers a clear framework for understanding contemporary conflicts by showing how geography provides opportunities and limits upon the actions of countries, national groups, and terrorist organizations. This second edition is fundamentally restructured to emphasize geopolitical agency, and non-state actors. The text is fully revised, containing a brand new chapter on environmental geopolitics, which includes discussion of climate change and resource conflicts. The text contains updated case studies, such as the Korean conflict, Israel-Palestine and Chechnya and Kashmir, to emphasize the multi-faceted nature of conflict. These, along with guided exercises, help explain contemporary global power struggles, environmental geopolitics, the global military actions of the United States, the persistence of nationalist conflicts, the changing role of borders, and the new geopolitics of terrorism, and peace movements. Throughout, the readers are introduced to different theoretical perspectives, including feminist contributions, as both the practice and representation of geopolitics are discussed. Introduction to Geopolitics is an ideal introductory text which provides a deeper and critical understanding of current affairs, geopolitical structures and agents. The text is extensively illustrated with diagrams, maps, photographs and end of chapter further reading. Both students and general readers alike will find this book an essential stepping-stone to understanding contemporary conflicts.
