This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manipulation of the Wax Scales of the Honey Bee The particular form of bee activity with which this paper deals is that which results in the removal of the wax scales from the bodies of the worker bees and in the application to the comb of the wax thus obtained. A detailed presentation of the facts will be given and attention called to certain current conceptions of this process which are in error. Since the bee is a. Very lively insect it is not surprising that the bodily movements upon which some of its activities depend are extremely difficult to follow and may easily be misunderstood. All of its highly specialized legs may be used at once in the performance of some intricate process, and the observer is in need of keenness of sight and patience if he would gain more than an approximate understanding of the parts taken by the several members. In the more permanent literature of apiculture and of zoology will be found well-written accounts of the habits of bees, accounts which are founded upon a large amount of careful observation and which represent the work of many students of bees from the time of Huber on. As the years have gone by, errors of sight and of judgment have gradually been eliminated, So that at the present time our knowledge of bee life, so far as it goes, rests upon a fairly satisfactory foundation of authenticated facts. Yet many puzzling questions are still unanswered, and some supposed facts may Still be doubted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Instead of dirt and poison we have rather chosen to fill our hives with honey and wax; thus furnisning mankind with the two noblest of things, which are sweetness and light". Mindful of Swift's dictum, this compilation is offered as an exhaustive coverage of a smallish literature on the synthesis and secretion of beeswax, its elaboration into combs and the factors which bear on the execution of these processes by honeybees. To codify any aspect of the biology of an animal of agricultural importance is to sift through myriad observations and experiments, centuries old, that come down to us enshrouded in the folk literature. It is evident that wars and languages have also acted as barriers to the dissemination of knowledge about honeybees. Thus, particular care has been given to the primacy of discovery and its con textual significance. I have endeavoured to not over-interpret data and to allow the authors' works to speak for themselves. I have also tried to indicate some of the more obvious gaps in our knowledge of honeybees in relation to wax and to suggest some directions as to where we might proceed, aided by discoveries made on other animals and plants. This was done to remind the seasoned bee-hand of our general neglect of beeswax biology, historically constituting less than a percentage point of the apicultural literature.

Book The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Classic Reprint written by R. E. Snodgrass and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Studies on the anatomy of the bee have not been lacking, for many good workers have taken up this subject for investigation. The popular demand for such information, however, has induced untrained men to write on the subject, and most accounts of bee anatomy contain numerous errors. This is probably to a greater extent true of the anatomy of the bee than of that of any other insect. Frequently the illustrations used by men not trained in anatomical work are more artistic than those usually found in papers on insect anatomy, and they consequently bear the superficial marks of careful work, but too often it is found that the details are in accurate. It has therefore seemed the right time for a new presenta tion of this subject based on careful work. The drawings given in the present paper are original, with the exception of figures 12, 54, and 55, and have been prepared with a thorough realization of the need of more accurate illustrations of the organs of the bee, especially of the internal organs. Mistakes will possibly be found, but the reader may be assured that all the parts drawn were seen. Most of the dissections, moreover, were verified by Dr. E. F. Phillips and Dr. J. A. Nelson, of this Bureau, before the drawings were made from them. An explanation of the abbreviations and lettering is given on pages 139 - 147. Book Langstroth s Hive and the Honey Bee

Download or read book Langstroth s Hive and the Honey Bee written by L. L. Langstroth and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This influential guide by "the father of modern beekeeping," originally published in 1853, constitutes the first descriptive treatise of modern bee management. Its innovations allowed people to engage in actual beekeeping, rather than simply handling bee domiciles and extracting the honey. The techniques it explains and illustrates are still employed 150 years later--including the author's patented invention, a movable frame hive. In a reader-friendly, enthusiastic style, Langstroth addresses every aspect of beekeeping: bee physiology; diseases and enemies of bees; the life-cycles of the queen, drone, and worker; bee-hives; the handling of bees; and many other topics. Unabridged republication of the classic 1878 (fourth) edition.--Publisher description.

Book The Beemoth Or Waxworm Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Beemoth Or Waxworm Classic Reprint written by Floyd B. Paddock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beemoth or Waxworm In stored empty combs the waxworm shows a decided preference to the combs in which brood has been reared. Of course, any comb is readily attacked and destroyed. In the case of stored honey, the comb is preferred as food and the honey is only eaten ia' small quantities. Honey cappings are readily devoured whenever found and often serve as the only food of the waxworm. It has been said that if fed on pure wax the worms will die. The writer observed one instance in which two full sheets of medium brood foundation were riddled by the wax worm.
