Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The mandala in Nichiren Buddhism" is the first comprehensive analysis of Nichichiren's mandalic corpus in English. As the total number of pages in a single volume would reach over 700, the book has been divided into three parts. This second volume covers the analysis of Nichiren's moji-mandala in the Kōan years from 1278 to 1282, the period of his full maturity. The Kōan era represents the peak of Nichiren's works, both from the viewpoint of his philosophy and aesthetics, such as calligraphy, composition style as well as the level of organization of Nichiren's sangha. The early Hokke confraternity centered on Nichiren, was a highly organized and functional group, with a systemized logistics and communication network, covering several provinces around the Japanese archipelago even during Nichiren's exile on Sado Island. Once he transferred to Minobu, his group grew larger and became exceptionally efficient and dynamic.

Book The Mandala in Nichiren Buddhism Volume 5

Download or read book The Mandala in Nichiren Buddhism Volume 5 written by Luigi Finocchiaro and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to present two important works in history of the Nichiren mandala research produced at the dawn of Japan's modern era. Without these two works, Yamanaka Kihachi and Kataoka Zuiki may not have been inspired to produce the Nichirendaishōnin Goshinseki: Gohonzonshū collection which remains an important reference catalogue even today. The Myōshūsentetsu Honzonkagami is mostly based on legends and oral traditions of various temples that developed during the centuries after Nichiren's passing. As the reader will immediately notice, not only several relics are evident apocryphons and some of the temples that were popular pilgrimage destinations also because of the legends related to them fell into ruin, some of the biographical dates and family ties do not always coincide. While modern scholarship has progressed immensely in the last decades, much of the knowledge about Nichiren and his group have no other base than these oral traditions created around the Edo period interpolated with Nichiren's writings.

Book Two Buddhas Seated Side by Side

Download or read book Two Buddhas Seated Side by Side written by Donald S. Lopez Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential companion to a timeless spiritual classic The Lotus Sūtra is among the most venerated scriptures of Buddhism. Composed in India some two millennia ago, it asserts the potential for all beings to attain supreme enlightenment. Donald Lopez and Jacqueline Stone provide an essential reading companion to this inspiring yet enigmatic masterpiece, explaining how it was understood by its compilers in India and, centuries later in medieval Japan, by one of its most influential proponents. In this illuminating chapter-by-chapter guide, Lopez and Stone show how the sūtra's anonymous authors skillfully reframed the mainstream Buddhist tradition in light of a new vision of the path and the person of the Buddha himself, and examine how the sūtra's metaphors, parables, and other literary devices worked to legitimate that vision. They go on to explore how the Lotus was interpreted by the Japanese Buddhist master Nichiren (1222–1282), whose inspired reading of the book helped to redefine modern Buddhism. In doing so, Lopez and Stone demonstrate how readers of sacred works continually reinterpret them in light of their own unique circumstances. An invaluable guide to an incomparable spiritual classic, this book unlocks the teachings of the Lotus for modern readers while providing insights into the central importance of commentary as the vehicle by which ancient writings are given contemporary meaning.

Book Religions of the United States in Practice Volume 2

Download or read book Religions of the United States in Practice Volume 2 written by Colleen McDannell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religions of the United States in Practice is a rich anthology of primary sources with accompanying essays that examines religious behavior in America. From praying in an early American synagogue to performing Mormon healing rituals to debating cremation, Volume 2 explores faith through action in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The documents and essays consider the religious practices of average people--praying, singing, healing, teaching, imagining, and persuading. Some documents are formal liturgies while other texts describe more spontaneous religious actions. Because religious practices also take place in the imagination, dreams, visions, and fictional accounts are also included. Accompanying each primary document is an essay that sets the religious practice in its historical and theological context--making this volume ideal for classroom use and accessible to any reader. The introductory essays explain the various meanings of religious practices as lived out in churches and synagogues, in parlors and fields, beside rivers, on lecture platforms, and in the streets. Religions of the United States in Practice offers a sampling of religious perspectives in order to approximate the living texture of popular religious thought and practice in the United States. The history of religion in America is more than the story of institutions and famous people. This anthology presents a more nuanced story composed of the everyday actions and thoughts of lay men and women.

Book Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism

Download or read book Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism written by Jacqueline I. Stone and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-05-31 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original enlightenment thought (hongaku shiso) dominated Buddhist intellectual circles throughout Japan’s medieval period. Enlightenment, this discourse claims, is neither a goal to be achieved nor a potential to be realized but the true status of all things. Every animate and inanimate object manifests the primordially enlightened Buddha just as it is. Seen in its true aspect, every activity of daily life—eating, sleeping, even one’s deluded thinking—is the Buddha’s conduct. Emerging from within the powerful Tendai School, ideas of original enlightenment were appropriated by a number of Buddhist traditions and influenced nascent theories about the kami (local deities) as well as medieval aesthetics and the literary and performing arts. Scholars and commentators have long recognized the historical importance of original enlightenment thought but differ heatedly over how it is to be understood. Some tout it as the pinnacle of the Buddhist philosophy of absolute non-dualism. Others claim to find in it the paradigmatic expression of a timeless Japanese spirituality. According other readings, it represents a dangerous anti-nomianism that undermined observance of moral precepts, precipitated a decline in Buddhist scholarship, and denied the need for religious discipline. Still others denounce it as an authoritarian ideology that, by sacralizing the given order, has in effect legitimized hierarchy and discriminative social practices. Often the acceptance or rejection of original enlightenment thought is seen as the fault line along which traditional Buddhist institutions are to be differentiated from the new Buddhist movements (Zen, Pure Land, and Nichiren) that arose during Japan’s medieval period. Jacqueline Stone’s groundbreaking study moves beyond the treatment of the original enlightenment doctrine as abstract philosophy to explore its historical dimension. Drawing on a wealth of medieval primary sources and modern Japanese scholarship, it places this discourse in its ritual, institutional, and social contexts, illuminating its importance to the maintenance of traditions of lineage and the secret transmission of knowledge that characterized several medieval Japanese elite culture. It sheds new light on interpretive strategies employed in pre-modern Japanese Buddhist texts, an area that hitherto has received a little attention. Through these and other lines of investigation, Stone problematizes entrenched notions of “corruption” in the medieval Buddhist establishment. Using the examples of Tendai and Nichiren Buddhism and their interactions throughout the medieval period, she calls into question both overly facile distinctions between “old” and “new” Buddhism and the long-standing scholarly assumptions that have perpetuated them. This study marks a significant contribution to ongoing debates over definitions of Buddhism in the Kamakura era (1185–1333), long regarded as a formative period in Japanese religion and culture. Stone argues that “original enlightenment thought” represents a substantial rethinking of Buddhist enlightenment that cuts across the distinction between “old” and “new” institutions and was particularly characteristic of the medieval period.
