Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an insight into the complexities of weaning Nigeria from its fossil fuels addiction while growing the economy on low carbon trajectory. Nigeria faces a carbon catch 22 with the proliferation of renewable energy alternatives and scale-up of electric vehicles. The dilemma Nigeria is confronted with is to grow its fossil-led economy or face the challenge of its fossil infrastructure becoming stranded assets. It is a roadmap for plotting an environmentally benign path out of the country’s economic, social and environmental crises. This book is, therefore, a valuable resource for students, Civil Society Organizations, policymakers, academics and climate change adaptation practitioners who are interested in finding an environmentally sensitive path out of Nigeria’s economic cul-de-sac fostered by the decarbonization of the global energy economy. Findings of this study will trigger a national conversation on the looming exit from fossil fuels. In doing so, accelerate the integration of renewable energy into the Nigerian national development plan while building a carbon neutral society. Lessons learnt from the handling of Nigeria’s precarious circumstance will be of immense benefit to other oil prospecting, oil producing and non-producing nations who are interested in finding an equitable way of pursuing two inversely related goals of meeting their decarbonization commitments while simultaneously growing their economies in the post-Paris era.

Book Energy Policies for Sustainable Development Strategies

This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a number of long-term energy scenarios are developed for Nigeria considering the impact of vital factors that may influence energy policies in the country’s future energy system. The energy scenarios were developed through the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model. The model identified the future energy demand and supply pattern using a least-cost combination of technology options while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases. The book presents four scenarios, and key parameters considered include GDP, households, population, urbanization and the growth rates of energy-intensive sectors. Further, it highlights the findings of the cost-benefit analysis, which reveal the costs of implementing selected policies and strategies in Nigeria, including those focusing on energy efficiency and fuel/technology switching. The book also discusses the application of the LEAP-OSeMOSYS Model in order to identify lowest-cost power plants for electricity generation. Some sustainable strategies that can ensure a low carbon development in Nigeria are also explored on the basis of successful country cases in relation to the Nigerian LEAP model. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

Book excerpt: This working paper gives an overview of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), a method that enables systematic cross-case comparison of an intermediate number of case studies. It presents an overview of QCA and detailed descriptions of different versions of the method. Based on the experience applying QCA to CIFOR’s Global Comparative Study on REDD+, the paper shows how QCA can help produce parsimonious and stringent research results from a multitude of in-depth case studies developed by numerous researchers. QCA can be used as a structuring tool that allows researchers to share understanding and produce coherent data, as well as a tool for making inferences usable for policy advice. REDD+ is still a young policy domain, and it is a very dynamic one. Currently, the benefits of QCA result mainly from the fact that it helps researchers to organize the evidence generated. However, with further and more differentiated case knowledge, and more countries achieving desired outcomes, QCA has the potential to deliver robust analysis that allows the provision of information, guidance and recommendations to ensure carbon-effective, cost-efficient and equitable REDD+ policy design and implementation

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural resources are essential ingredients for the development of any nation. But in many parts of the developing world like Nigeria, huge finances arising from natural resources are stolen by individuals and corporate bodies due to bad public management to the detriment of national development. This brings about the situation where plenty people live in poverty in the midst of plenty natural resources. Soil and climatic conditions favour the development of agriculture in many parts of Nigeria and about 60 million of the population is engaged in agriculture for survival and export. With improvements in farming technology and good natural resources management, Nigeria can feed its population and continue to make progress in national development efforts. The exploratory research design was used for the study. The result showed positive relationship between the variables of interest. The study was limited by lack of current relevant literature; therefore, further study could examine the relationship between poor natural resources management and poverty in Nigeria in attempt to explain the reasons for high rate of poverty in Nigeria. It was recommended that government should give attention to the mining and management of mineral resources such as gold and steel as a major perspective on national development in Nigeria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B, University of Ibadan (Centre for Petroleum Energy Economics and Law), course: Environmental Law and Policy I, language: English, abstract: Access to energy in the form of electricity undoubtedly plays an important role in nation's growth, economic development, healthcare delivery, addressing energy poverty, supporting urbanization, delivering competitive energy to developing and developed countries alike and generally human well-being. There are different sources of electricity; and generation of electricity from them equally affect human well- being and the environment. Some of the notable sources of electricity or energy are: solar, fossil fuels, biogas, solid biomass, nuclear, hydropower. This work attempts to examine the environmental safety of coal use vis-a -vis power provision in Nigeria. Coal is a fossil fuel formed from decomposition of organic materials subjected to geological heat and pressure for millions of years. It is considered a non- renewable energy source because it cannot be replenished within human time frame. Coal is a combustible black or brownish - black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or vein called coal beds or coal steams. The United States Energy Information Administration highlighting the importance and cheaper cost of coal in energy mix states that global consumption is likely to increase by 48%from 6 .7 million metric tons to an estimated 9. 98 billion short tons by 2030. Coal as an energy source contributes about 30% of the United States of America electricity generation, 93% of South Africa electricity generation, and 79% of the People's Republic of China electricity generation. Going by this statistics and the fact that coal is cheap source for electricity generation, it is safe to assert that Nigeria has the potentials to produce cheaper electricity to solve its dearth of electricity generation and supply using coal. Book Low Carbon Development

Download or read book Low Carbon Development written by Raffaello Cervigni and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-08-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted an ambitious strategy to make Nigeria the world’s 20th largest economy by 2020. Sustaining such a pace of growth will entail rapid expansion of the level of activity in key carbon-emitting sectors, such as power, oil and gas, agriculture and transport. In the absence of policies to accompany economic growth with a reduced carbon foot-print, emissions of greenhouse gases could more than double in the next two decades. This study finds that there are several options for Nigeria to achieve the development objectives of vision 20:2020 and beyond, but stabilizing emissions at 2010 levels, and with domestic benefits in the order of 2 percent of GDP. These benefits include cheaper and more diversified electricity sources; more efficient operation of the oil and gas industry; more productive and climate –resilient agriculture; and better transport services, resulting in fuel economies, better air quality, and reduced congestion. The study outlines several actions that the Federal Government could undertake to facilitate the transition towards a low carbon economy, including enhanced governance for climate action, integration of climate consideration in the Agriculture Transformation Agenda, promotion of energy efficiency programs, scale-up of low carbon technologies in power generation (such as renewables an combined cycle gas turbines), and enhance vehicle fuel efficiency.

Book Analysis on the Impact of Energy Consumption and Green Growth in Nigeria

Download or read book Analysis on the Impact of Energy Consumption and Green Growth in Nigeria written by Basiru Haliru and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to clean and modern energy constitutes a colossal challenge confronting not only Nigeria but also Africa as a whole. This is due to the fact that energy is an indispensable requirement for the socio-economic development of any nation. The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the impact of energy consumption on green growth in Nigeria, with a focus on renewable energy. To achieve this objective, time series data spanning over four decades (1980-2021) were collected from both domestic and foreign reputable organizations, including the World Bank's World Development Indicators (WDI), the International Energy Administration portal, and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) through its annual statistical bulletin. The study adopted the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) to investigate the influence of energy consumption and selected variables such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Openness (OPN), and Carbon Tax (C02 tax) on Green Growth in Nigeria. The findings from this research revealed that green growth has a statistically significant positive relationship with its first lag and current value at a 1% level of significance. Furthermore, it was discovered that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between electricity (energy) consumption and green growth in Nigeria. However, the results indicated a negative and statistically insignificant relationship between foreign direct investment and green growth. Based on these results, it is highly recommended that the Nigerian government pays more attention to the development of renewable energy sources. This variable is crucial in determining green growth and is essential for the progress of the modern economy. Thus, the government must shift its focus from carbon emissions caused by energy production to more modern green energies that foster economic growth. Additionally, the research demonstrated that the more electricity is consumed, the greater the demand for it, necessitating the government to ensure the stability of electricity supply. This may be the result of the entry of new industries, plants, and other related activities.

Book Renewable Energy Resource Utilization in Nigeria

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The urgent need to de-carbonize the world economies, ensure energy security and sustainable development has engender a global resort to renewable energy resource utilization. While some jurisdictions are investing heavily on its deployment, Nigeria seems to be lagging behind, perhaps, due to its continuous reliance on a fossil fuel driven economy and other systemic challenges. The paper explore the potentials and benefits of renewable energy resource utilization in Nigeria. The paper argue that in line with global trends, if Nigeria truly desire to meet its commitments under the Paris Accord and Sustainable Development Goals targets, it should accelerate its investment and development of renewable energy resources. To surmount barriers and challenges militating against Nigeria's renewable energy agenda, the researcher concludes by recommending the removal of fuel subsidy to allow for a level playing ground for investors; and the need to leverage on investment opportunities by enacting fiscal laws and policies that encourage foreign investment, promote public private partnerships, facilitate Research and Development, ensure efficient technology transfer, and proper development of renewable energy resources in the country.

Book Addressing the Natural Resource Curse

Download or read book Addressing the Natural Resource Curse written by Mr.Arvind Subramanian and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some natural resources-oil and minerals in particular-exert a negative and nonlinear impact on growth via their deleterious impact on institutional quality. We show this result to be very robust. The Nigerian experience provides telling confirmation of this aspect of natural resources. Waste and poor institutional quality stemming from oil appear to have been primarily responsible for Nigeria's poor long-run economic performance. We propose a solution for addressing this resource curse which involves directly distributing the oil revenues to the public. Even with all the difficulties that will no doubt plague its actual implementation, our proposal will, at the least, be vastly superior to the status quo. At best, however, it could fundamentally improve the quality of public institutions and, as a result, durably raise long-run growth performance.
