Book excerpt: This study aims to ascertain which particular personal characteristics of farmers are associated with management efficiency. Initially a group of male farmers in the Rotorua area were surveyed to develop an index of management efficiency. The farmers were then observed and an attempt made to rate them on personal factors which could possibly influence or be associated with management efficiency. The measure of success used was net returns, including capital gains, expressed as an earning rate on capital investment. Direct influences (management practices) are found not to greatly influence success. Three personal traits (intelligence, energy, ambition and faith in ability) were found to be closely associated with success. Other indirect influences investigated were background of the farmer and their spouse, help given by spouse, condition of the home and garden, number of dependent children, age, social activities, holidays taken, and extension contacts. Of these only previous work responsibility on farms was found to show any obvious association with success. It appeared that the personal traits of the manager, especially intelligence, are of much more importance than environmental factors. (MR).
