Book The Man who was Rip Van Winkle

Download or read book The Man who was Rip Van Winkle written by Benjamin McArthur and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most beloved American comedic actor of the nineteenth century, Joseph Jefferson made his name as Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle. In this book, a compelling blend of biography and theatrical and cultural history, Benjamin McArthur chronicles Jefferson's remarkable career and offers a lively and original account of the heroic age of the American theatre. Joe Jefferson's entire life was spent on the stage, from the age of Jackson to the dawn of motion pictures. He extensively toured the United States as well as Australia and Great Britain. An ever-successful career (including acclaim as painter and memoirist) put him in the company of the great actors, artists, and writers of the day, including Edwin Forrest, Edwin Booth, John Singer Sargent, and William Dean Howells. This book rescues a brilliant figure and places him, appropriately enough, on center stage of a pivotal time for American theatre. McArthur explores the personalities of the period, the changing theatrical styles and their audiences, the touring life, and the wide and varied culture of theatre. Through the life of Jefferson, McArthur is able to illuminate an era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rip Van Winkle" is a short story by the American author Washington Irving, first published in 1819. It follows a Dutch-American villager in colonial America named Rip Van Winkle who falls asleep in the Catskill Mountains and wakes up 20 years later, having missed the American Revolution. Irving wrote it while living in Birmingham, England, as part of the collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. The story is set in New York's Catskill Mountains, but Irving later admitted, "When I wrote the story, I had never been on the Catskills." "Rip Van Winkle" is set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War in a village at the foot of New York's Catskill Mountains where Rip Van Winkle, a Dutch-American villager, lives. One autumn day, Van Winkle wanders into the mountains with his dog Wolf to escape his wife's nagging. He hears his name called out and sees a man wearing antiquated Dutch clothing; he is carrying a keg up the mountain and requires help. Together, the men and Wolf proceed to a hollow in which Rip discovers the source of thunderous noises: a group of ornately dressed, silent, bearded men who are playing nine-pins. Among the most significant works Washington Irving: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Tales of a Traveller, Bracebridge Hall, The Devil and Tom Walker, Kidd the Pirate, The Alhambra, Woolfert's Roost & The Crayon Papers.

Download or read book Rip Van Winkle Illustrated by Arthur Rackham written by Irving Washington and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rip Van Winkle is a short story written by the American author Washington Irving, and originally published in 1819. It is accompanied by the truly impressive illustrations of Arthur Rackham, and tells the story of a kindly and solitary character, Rip Van Winkle, who loves to tell the local children stories. Set in the years just before and after the American Revolutionary War, it is one of Irving’s finest stories. Irving is also known for his work of gothic horror, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820). The book contains a series of dazzling colour and black-and-white illustrations – by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Washington Irving’s enchanting narrative.
