Download or read book Men We Reaped written by Jesmyn Ward and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...And then we heard the rain falling, and that was the drops of blood falling; and when we came to get the crops, it was dead men that we reaped.' Harriet TubmanIn five years, Jesmyn Ward lost five men in her life, to drugs, accidents, suicide, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses, one after another, made Jesmyn ask the question: why? And as she began to write about the experience of living through all the dying, she realized the truth--and it took her breath away. Her brother and her friends all died because of who they were and where they were from, because they lived with a history of racism and economic struggle that fostered drug addiction and the dissolution of family and relationships. Jesmyn says the answer was so obvious she felt stupid for not seeing it. But it nagged at her until she knew she had to write about her community, to write their stories and her own. Jesmyn grew up in poverty in rural Mississippi. She writes powerfully about the pressures this brings, on the men who can do no right and the women who stand in for family in a society where the men are often absent. She bravely tells her story, revisiting the agonizing losses of her only brother and her friends. As the sole member of her family to leave home and pursue high education, she writes about this parallel American universe with the objectivity distance provides and the intimacy of utter familiarity.
Download or read book Sowing and Reaping Whatever a man sows that shall he also reap Galatians 6 7 written by Dwight L. Moody and published by Aneko Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do not deceive yourselves; God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows that shall he also reap. For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that sows in the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8) We can't get away from the principle of reaping what we sow. If we sow good seed, we anticipate a great harvest. But if we sow weeds, we'll harvest no more than we sowed. The same is true spiritually and practically. If we want a reward in heaven, we must live for Christ. On the other hand, if we lie, cheat, swear, steal, get drunk, use drugs, or otherwise fulfill the lusts of the flesh, the reality is we'll pay the consequences both now and in eternity. No matter how much society tries to convince us otherwise, this law has proven to be true without fail. This is the bright truth held before us in this little book – if we sow good seed, we will reap a great harvest. While sowing and caring for the seed sown isn't without work, the promise of a great harvest is what keeps us going and what brings joy to our labors. Be assured that it is not in vain to spend much time pruning, weeding, and carefully watching over the garden of your heart and the hearts of those you love.

Book excerpt: Unlike fantasy epics that bring all new races such as orcs, elves, and dwarves in the style of Tolkien, or Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle, The Reaping is dark fantasy that brings as much diversity from its all-human cast. From the Ashborn–the technologically-savvy steampunk mountain rangers of Borensati–to the Templars, disciplined, systematic warrior women who harvest the powers of the Sun and the earth to turn their weapons into medieval lightsabers, the cast of The Reaping pulls readers into a warbound, thought-provoking fantasy adventure. "This is how the world ends: The innocent kill. Those killers lead. That is the nature of war, which ravages the province of Evigönda. For a breath, there is peace, but the gods’ demands pull at the strings.Amos is a mystic who guards Bo, a seer who sacrificed her physical sight to see spirits. Together, they must use her judgment to harvest souls for the Reaping, a sacred mission and necessary evil to maintain the safety of their homeland. Every move they make throws the world into further chaos, and when a scarred veteran makes it his mission to stop the Reaping so he can save his own struggling nation, the body count rises. Shady allies and passionate enemies challenge the morals of piety and righteousness in this gripping fantasy tale."

Book excerpt: Unlike his parents and his twin Seamus, Ian O’Donnell is not a good witch. Or rather, he isn’t quite good at it. Studying charts and remembering candles hasn’t ever really been his thing. Still, he longs to see the mystical sites of the world, especially the Great Pyramids of Giza. When Ian finally reaches them, though, he finds himself more attracted to the sexy man who works the night shift at his hotel than he does the pyramids. Ian’s able to convince Khnurn to take him to the desert for a romantic evening in front of the pyramids. Everything’s going great until Khnurn gets serious. He tells Ian he’s a vampire and they’ve known each other before. Unfortunately, Ian can’t recall ever having been in a serious relationship in this life, or any other, and he isn’t quite sure Khnurn isn’t just feeding him pick-up lines. When Khnurn leaves Ian alone to think about things, another man appears in Ian’s life, a crazy-looking spectre that might just be the Angel of Death. Ian soon finds himself hightailing it back to Massachusetts just in time for Halloween with his wonderfully animated witch family and their coven. Unfortunately, it isn’t souvenirs Ian’s brought back with him, but rather the creepy spectre from the desert, and maybe a sexy vampire who might just be the love of his life.
