Book excerpt: This book is "a narrative journey, a thematic presentation of the suffering, alienation, and rejection of Jesus Christ by a host of people, those for whom Jesus was "the other," and in many respects, therefore, a stranger. Jesus is presented in this grand constructed narrative, carefully laid out and composed of key gospel texts, against the backdrop of a cast of oppositional characters who unwittingly help to portray Jesus in his utter goodness, deep humility, and abiding love."--Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who and what was Jesus of Nazareth? In this question and its answer is involved the whole of what we mean by Christianity. If it could be demonstrably proved that there never existed such a person as Jesus, Christianity, as a living force, would cease from the earth. There would indeed be a history, a literature that would interest people according to their tastes; but there would be no heart-changing, world-up-lifting system of vital and vitalizing truths and corresponding duties, binding upon the conscience of every human being and inspiring hope in every breast. In the discussions we are about to enter nothing will be assumed except what is too obvious to question. It will not be assumed that the little books called "gospels" were inspired at all. You will not be asked to consider any miracle, said to have been performed by Jesus, as making proof of his divinity. Nor will I quote proof-texts to show that he is divine. The first question to ask is this: Did such a person as Jesus is described to have been ever really exist? Did Jesus really live in Nazareth and work in Joseph's shop? Did he, for some three years and six months, go to and fro among men teaching them? Was there, in the days of Herod and Pilate, a Jesus as surely as there was a Caesar?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jesus everybody likes, says Mark Strauss, is not the Jesus found in the Gospels. He preached about hell far more than the apostle Paul. He told his followers to hate their families. Not one of his twelve apostles was a woman. When we unpack these puzzling paradoxes and more, we gain greater insight into Jesus' countercultural message and mission.

Charlesworth This new edition of David Flusser's classic study of the historical Jesus, revised and updated by his student and colleague R. Steven Notley, will be welcomed everywhere by students and scholars of early Christianity and Judaism. Reflecting Flusser's mastery of ancient literary sources and modern archaeological discoveries, The Sage from Galilee offers a fresh, informed biographical portrait of Jesus in the context of Jewish faith and life in his day. Including a chronological table (330 BC – AD 70), and twenty-eight illustrations, The Sage from Galilee is the culmination of nearly six decades of study by one of the world's foremost Jewish authorities on the New Testament and early Christianity. Both Jewish and Christian readers will find challenge and new understanding in these pages.

Book excerpt: "We have read many lives of Christ; but nothing quite so wholesome, helpful and convincing as this collection of thoughts." -The Critic "An excellent little treatise on the character of Christ. The fact that the writer in composing the work has kept before his mental eye the classes to whom he addressed himself in the college days will make the work of greater service to such as seek to know the truth as it is in Jesus. We heartily commend the volume to the public." -The Methodist Review "An admirable book; just the one, in fact, to place in the hands of inquiring young people in danger of being snared by the plausible fallacies of skepticism. The character of Jesus could not be the creation of human genius. His grasp on mankind is that of a very real and powerful personality. The effective treatment of a noble theme and the exquisite charm of the author's style ought to place this volume in every Sunday-school library in the land." -The Church School Journal "An argument for the divinity of Christ, unsurpassed by anything on the subject published during the last century." -The National Cyclopedia of American Biography "Will chiefly rest his fame as a theologian and an author. When the mountain-piled tomes of German criticism have melted away under the shining of the sun of the new age, 'The Man From Galilee' may still be read with joy and profit." -Horace Mellard Du Bose , "A History of Methodism" "He was a peerless preacher. Everything that contributes to the power and effectiveness of the pulpit he seemed to possess....As an author, Bishop Haygood came into prominence first by a prize essay....Among the most notable of his books is the one entitled 'The Man of Galilee.' The title of this book is hardly a fair statement of its aim and scope. It is really an argument for the divinity of Christ. But those who have had frequent opportunities of hearing Bishop Haygood preach will recall his fondness for the phrase so often used by our Lord in reference to himself, 'The Son of Man.' The humanity of our Lord was a theme upon which in his sermons he delighted to dwell." -The American Illustrated Methodist Magazine "The subject of this volume is the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and the impossibility of accounting for the Gospels, except by admitting the truth. This point is not a new one, but it is here brought out with wonderful freshness, vivacity, and force. Dr. Haygood writes with great singleness of purpose, and all he utters goes straight to the mark. The book is a valuable addition to the literature of popular apologetics, because it is so plain and easy of comprehension and readable. Many who would revolt from a more learned or abstruse treatise could be induced to take up this slender duodecimo, and if they once began it, they would be apt to go through. And this having been accomplished, they would be well fortified against the approaches of skepticism, however acute or ingenious." -The Presbyterian Review
