Book Once Upon a Time in the Past Book Iii

Download or read book Once Upon a Time in the Past Book Iii written by Earnest Sims Sr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Three of Once Upon A Time in the Past, subtitled "The Last Of The Logan Boys", marks the end of the infamous Logan boys' Outlaw Trail when all the brothers but one are dead, two by a posse's bullets, one at the end of a rope, and the other to escape to freedom - if freedom is tired, lonely, hungry- with a big lawman named Jake Shaw hounding his trail beyond his juridiction. Jake Shaw was an old army veteran of the Civil War turned lawman shortly after the war ended. He was just twenty-two years old when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in April of 1865, just twenty-one years ago. He had hung up his uniform for a deputys badge and later became sheriff of Clayton County. He been wearing a Silver Star every since. Jake Shaw had not lost brothers, uncles or cousins in the war as other soldiers he had known and, therefore, he held no drudge toward his fellow man of the Gray. Before the war, it had been just him and his maw. He knew nothing of his paw, only that he had been a riverboat operator on the Mississippi. His maw had traveled with his paw on every route, carrying him, Shaw, in her womb until the day he was born on the river. She had been there when he left to join the war, standing in the yard waving goodbye. And she was there when he came home four years later. He had stood over her with his head bowed, his Union hat in hand, to say goodbye to her again. A headstone said Sally Shaw had died in 1863. But her son hadnt learned of her death until he came home from the War of the Lost

Book The Old West in Fact and Film

Download or read book The Old West in Fact and Film written by Jeremy Agnew and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, movie audiences have carried on a love affair with the American West, believing Westerns are escapist entertainment of the best kind, harkening back to the days of the frontier. This work compares the reality of the Old West to its portrayal in movies, taking an historical approach to its consideration of the cowboys, Indians, gunmen, lawmen and others who populated the Old West in real life and on the silver screen. Starting with the Westerns of the early 1900s, it follows the evolution in look, style, and content as the films matured from short vignettes of good-versus-bad into modern plots.

Book Weird Westerns

Download or read book Weird Westerns written by Kerry Fine and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Top Ten Finalist for the Locus Awards in Nonfiction Joshua Smith's chapter "Uncle Tom's Cabin Showdown" won the 2021 Don D. Walker Prize from the Western Literature Association Weird Westerns is an exploration of the hybrid western genre--an increasingly popular and visible form that mixes western themes, iconography, settings, and conventions with elements drawn from other genres, such as science fiction, horror, and fantasy. Despite frequent declarations of the western's death, the genre is now defined in part by its zombie-like ability to survive in American popular culture in weird, reanimated, and reassembled forms. The essays in Weird Westerns analyze a wide range of texts, including those by Native American authors Stephen Graham Jones (Blackfeet) and William Sanders (Cherokee); the cult television series Firefly and The Walking Dead; the mainstream feature films Suicide Squad and Django Unchained; the avant-garde and bizarre fiction of Joe R. Lansdale; the tabletop roleplaying game Deadlands: The Weird West; and the comic book series Wynonna Earp. The essays explore how these weird westerns challenge conventional representations by destabilizing or subverting the centrality of the heterosexual, white, male hero but also often surprisingly reinforce existing paradigms in their inability to imagine an existence outside of colonial frameworks.

Book Once Upon A Time in the Past

Download or read book Once Upon A Time in the Past written by Earnest "Tex" Sims Sr. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-06-29 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In three books I tried to capture all aspects of the Old West—the rowdy towns, saloons, prostitutes, homesteaders, cattle ranchers, cattle rustlers, cattle drives, stampedes, canvas-covered wagons, wagon trains, wild horses, cowboys, Indians, miners and prospectors, fur traders, claimjumpers, sheriffs, outlaws, gunfighters, railroads and trains, stagecoaches, banks and holdups, love, life, and death—when I wrote the trilogy of “Once Upon A Time In The Past”. Book One of Once Upon A Time in the Past, subtitled “The Sons Of Sam Logan”—involves four young boys, Chance William, Burt Wiley, Peter Wallace and Jesse Lee “Boots” Logan, a black youth who adopts the Logan name, who grows up and become outlaws—opens circa 1890 in Payton, Kansas: Rancher Clay Miller sat behind his desk staring at four miniature porcelain horses: a black and white piebald; black, white-rump appaloosa; golden palomino with a white blazed face; and a black stallion with a diamond-shaped white dot on its forehead. The rancher’s eyes then stared down at a necklace made with pure gold nuggets wedged together on a long string of rawhide-leather with a black, genuine Indian arrowhead at the end. He reached down and picked the necklace up. A shadow of sudden gloominess crossed his face as he gazed at the necklace. A finger fiddled unconsciously with the arrowhead dangling at the end of it, as he held the necklace in his hands, staring into space. The necklace brought back memories of the past—good times and bad times. His thoughts wiggled and waggled as his recollections took him back into time long before he was a man:

Book That You Might Believe Study on the Gospel of John

Download or read book That You Might Believe Study on the Gospel of John written by Robert L. Deffinbaugh and published by Biblical Studies Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are certain books of the Bible that just seem to stand out and the Gospel of John is surely one such book. It is frequently the first book of the Bible we encourage non-Christians to read in the hope that its message will lead them to faith in Christ. After all, that is the purpose of the book. See John 20:31.For Christians, the Gospel of John is a source of much truth about our Lord and the Gospel. But it is much more than that. It is an opportunity for us to follow Him as we read, and to identify with the disciples as their knowledge of Him continues to expand. It is our opportunity to get to know the heart of the Savior, and to fellowship with Him through His Word. If men of old found their hearts set on fire as they listened to Him teach in person (Luke 24:32), so we will find our hearts warmed as we seek to listen to Him through this Gospel.I challenge you to join me in making the Gospel of John the subject of your study. May God use it to help you see and serve Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

Book The Grand Duke from Boys Ranch

Download or read book The Grand Duke from Boys Ranch written by Bill Sarpalius and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a boy in Houston, Bill Sarpalius, his brothers, and their mother lived an itinerant life. Bill dug food out of trashcans, and he and his brothers moved from one school to the next. They squatted in a vacant home while their mother, affectionately called “Honey,” battled alcoholism and suicidal tendencies. In an act of desperation, she handed her three sons over to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch north of Amarillo. At the time, Bill was thirteen years old and could not read. Life at Boys Ranch had its own set of harrowing challenges, however. He found himself living in fear of some staff and older boys. He became involved in Future Farmers of America and discovered a talent for public speaking. When he graduated, he had a hundred dollars and no place to go. He worked hard, earned a scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and obtained a college degree. After a brief career as a teacher and in agribusiness, he won a seat in the Texas Senate. Driven by the memory of his suffering mother, he launched the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in an effort to help people struggling with addiction. Sarpalius later served in the United States Congress. As a Lithuanian American, he took a special interest in that nation’s fight for independence from the Soviet Union. For his efforts, Sarpalius received the highest honor possible to a non-Lithuanian citizen and was named a “Grand Duke.” The Grand Duke from Boys Ranch is a unique political memoir—the story of a life full of unlikely paths that is at once heartbreaking and inspirational.
