Download or read book Mammals of the Eastern United States written by John O. Whitaker and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors have done a superb job of distilling a vast amount of information on the biology of the terrestrial mammals of the eastern United States in a style that will not only satisfy the expert's need for accurate data but will also appeal to students and others interested in natural history." —James N. Layne, Archbold Biological Station In their definitive work on eastern mammals, John O. Whitaker, Jr., and W. J. Hamilton, Jr., vividly convey their sheer delight at the variety and abundance of mammalian life. They have brought together a wealth of biological information and applied a biological subspecies concept to the mammals of the eastern United States. Their research extends "from the high reaches of Mount Katahdin in northern Maine, where water shrews and moose hold company," to the unglaciated hills of southern Indiana, where pygmy shrews (each weighing less than a dime) lived undetected until 1981. From there, they reach to "the cypress swamps of lower Florida, where the spoor of the mountain lion may be seen."*Describes the animals, their behavior, and dispersion in all 27 states east of the Mississippi River.*Almost entirely rewritten, this edition provides an abundance of scientific information in combination with anecdotes, field notes, and an underlying reverence for the fragile diversity of animal life. *Illustrations include 110 range maps, 167 black-and-white photographs, and 92 color images.*Covers 121 species, 17 more than in the previous edition. *Uses a biological subspecies concept, showing the results of evolution through differentiation. *Provides keys to orders and genera, anatomical line drawings. *Summarizes information on endangered and threatened species for each of the eastern states. *Lists state mammal books in the literature section.

Book The Bobcat of North America

Download or read book The Bobcat of North America written by Stanley P. Young and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Stanley P. Young completes his series of monographs on the major predatory mammals of North America. As in his earlier works, The Wolves of North America; The Puma, Mysterious American Cat; and The Clever Coyote, Mr. Young writes with the authority of a field biologist who has studied his subjects for more than a quarter of a century in the intimacy of their own habitat, from coast to coast and from the northern limits of their range in Alaska and Canada to the deserts of Mexico. Mr. Young, now Director of Bird and Mammal Laboratories in the Branch of Wildlife Research of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, began his career as a biologist in the old Bureau of Biological Survey When much of the Activity of that agency hinged around the control of predatory animals. In this and in later capacities he has probably handled, weighed, measured, and studied more specimens, alive and dead, of the bobcat in its many races than any other scientist. In addition to his own wide experiences he has drawn upon the wealth of records and field observations of farmers, stockmen, trappers, predator hunters, state and federal biologists, and wildlife technicians in the files of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The book is a complete scientific study of the subject from every angle, interestingly spiced with anecdotes from the author’s own rich personal experience. How big is a “big” bobcat? How serious is bobcat predation on game animals? How can a small bobcat pull down and kill a deer five times its own weight? What are the habits and habitat of the bobcat? What are the ranges of its various scientifically recognized races? All of these questions and many more are answered in the pages of this generously illustrated book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative history of the Okefenokee Swamp reveals it as a place where harsh realities clashed with optimism, shaping the borderland culture of southern Georgia and northern Florida for over two hundred years. From the formation of the Georgia colony in 1732 to the end of the Great Depression, the Okefenokee Swamp was a site of conflict between divergent local communities. Coining the term “ecolocalism” to describe how local cultures form out of ecosystems and in relation to other communities, Megan Kate Nelson offers a new view of the Okefenokee, its inhabitants, and its rich and telling record of thwarted ambitions, unintended consequences, and unresolved questions. The Okefenokee is simultaneously terrestrial and aquatic, beautiful and terrifying, fertile and barren. This peculiar ecology created discord as human groups attempted to overlay firm lines of race, gender, and class on an area of inherent ambiguity and blurred margins. Rice planters, slaves, fugitive slaves, Seminoles, surveyors, timber barons, Swampers, and scientists came to the swamp with dreams of wealth, freedom, and status that conflicted in varied and complex ways. Ecolocalism emerged out of these conflicts between communities within the Okefenokee and other borderland swamps. Nelson narrates the fluctuations, disconnections, and confrontations embedded in the muck of the swamp and the mire of its disorderly history, and she reminds us that it is out of such places of intermingling and uncertainty that cultures are forged.
