Book Contraceptive Research and Development

Download or read book Contraceptive Research and Development written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-04 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "contraceptive revolution" of the 1960s and 1970s introduced totally new contraceptive options and launched an era of research and product development. Yet by the late 1980s, conditions had changed and improvements in contraceptive products, while very important in relation to improved oral contraceptives, IUDs, implants, and injectables, had become primarily incremental. Is it time for a second contraceptive revolution and how might it happen? Contraceptive Research and Development explores the frontiers of science where the contraceptives of the future are likely to be found and lays out criteria for deciding where to make the next R&D investments. The book comprehensively examines today's contraceptive needs, identifies "niches" in those needs that seem most readily translatable into market terms, and scrutinizes issues that shape the market: method side effects and contraceptive failure, the challenge of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and the implications of the "women's agenda." Contraceptive Research and Development analyzes the response of the pharmaceutical industry to current dynamics in regulation, liability, public opinion, and the economics of the health sector and offers an integrated set of recommendations for public- and private-sector action to meet a whole new generation of demand.

Book Validation of a Corona Discharge Technique to Test Male Latex Condoms for Pinhole Defects

Download or read book Validation of a Corona Discharge Technique to Test Male Latex Condoms for Pinhole Defects written by BA. Herman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Food and Drug Administration, evaluated a prototype device using novel technology to detect pinholes in male latex condoms. This device uses multiple electrodes, maintained at high positive voltage, which interrogate a latex condom placed on a conducting mandrel. An electric discharge occurs only when a small hole is present in the condom and is sensed by the device. The mandrel is rotated to map out the entire surface of the condom. Using latex condoms with laser-drilled holes ranging from approximately 1 to 30 μm in diameter, we examined the sensitivity of this device. The smallest holes were detected, and the overall false negative rate was 2%.

Book The Whole Truth About Contraception

Download or read book The Whole Truth About Contraception written by Suzanne Wymelenberg and published by Joseph Henry Press. This book was released on 1997-08-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What birth control method is most reliable? Can contraceptives protect me from AIDS? How can I choose the method that's best for me? Finding the answers to these and other questions about birth control can be tough. On the one hand, today's sexually active person has many contraceptive options. On the other hand, each option has pluses and minuses that must be weighed. For teenagers especially, asking questions about birth control can be awkward and difficult. Yet teenagers may be in greatest need of the facts. While there is no "right" method for everyone, The Whole Truth About Contraception is the right book for anyone making decisions about contraceptionâ€"men and women, from teenagers to middle-agers. It illustrates male and female anatomy and explains how conception occurs. The book carefully describes the birth control methods available today: barrier (such as condoms and diaphragms), hormonal (the Pill and Norplant), intrauterine devices, surgical sterilization, and other approaches such as the "rhythm" method and breastfeeding as a contraceptive. For each method the authors discuss how well it prevents pregnancy, its potential effects on the user's health, and common problems. Illustrated "how to" sections are provided, and the authors comment on how each method typically affects sexual experience. The book also discusses how birth control products can be obtained and their cost. Precautions, tips on usage, and other features throughout the book will help each reader decide what type of contraception is best for his or her age, personal preferences, and situation in life. The Whole Truth About Contraception gives up-to-date information on new products, such as the female condom and the nonlatex male condom. The book provides details about contraception and sexually transmitted diseases, with an emphasis on AIDS. Also offered is an expanded discussion of "emergency" contraception, designed for use after unprotected sex. The book includes a full and factual discussion of abortion. Contraception may be the most important and deeply personal choice anyone has to make. This book provides the straight facts that will make the decision easierâ€"and the results better for everyone.
