Book excerpt: ‘A song, so old and yet still famous’ is a Malay expression of admiration for an exotic singing style, a musical contemplation on the beauty of nature, God, and love. The ghazal exists in manifold cultures all over Asia, Africa, and Southern Europe, and is intimately connected to Islam and its periphery. In each region, ghazals have been shaped into other expressions using imported features and transforming them into ‘local art’. In the Malay world, ghazals come in various shapes and with different meanings. ‘The song, so old’ is the song that came before the proliferation of mass media. The first ghazals that were heard in the Malay world might have been those ghazals performed by Hindustani musicians traveling in Southeast Asia. However, later on, the ghazal’s development was additionally triggered by mass media, with technological progress enhancing change in urban entertainment and introducing new sources of further adaptations. In this context, the second half line of the lyrics mentioned, ‘and yet still famous’, means that despite being old, the song is highly regarded as an art in itself. Malay ghazals are still attractive and musically demanding. They were traditionally not performed for mass appeal, but, rather, for a small knowledgeable audience that valued musical refinement and taste.

For two millennia until colonial times, they were part of the 'maritime silk road' between China and Southeast, South and West Asia. Kepri's two million inhabitants thus share a seafaring worldview that is reflected in their traditions and daily life and is expressed most commonly in the performing arts of its largest and smallest population groups, the Kepri Malays and the formerly nomadic Orang Suku Laut (People of the Sea) respectively. Book excerpt: Bangsawan - the first popular urban commercial theatre in Malaysia - merged in the late nineteenth century as an adaptation of the Parsi theatre of India which toured Malaya. The first indigenous theatre in Malaya to be modelled along Western lines, bangsawan engendered the development of the first Malay orchestra and the first Malay popular music in the country. This book traces the stylistic changes in bangsawan from the late nineteenth century to the 1980s and links these changes to the socio-political transformations in Malaysian society. A product of a period characterized by rapid and radical social changes occurring as a result of British intervention, bangsawan of the early twentieth century was heterogeneous, innovative, and constantly adapting to new situations and new audiences. Its conventions of plot structure, character types, costumes, speech, and stage setting corresponded with the new 'structure of feeling' in the society of that time. After a decline in the 1940s and 1950s caused by social hardships and uncertainties in the wake of World War II and the immediate post-war and Emergency periods, bangsawan was revived in the 1970s. However, this revival - spearheaded by the government and government institutions - has resulted in bangsawan being reshaped, Malayized for new national purposes, and projected as traditional theatre. This book is written in terms of a relatively recent trend in ethnomusicology which emphasizes diachronic analyses. The author is an ethnomusicologist at the Arts Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Kelantan is the northernmost province on the east coast of Malaysia. It is considered to be the most orthodox area in a nation whose state religion is Islam. At the same time it must be noted that it borders to the north with the Buddhist country of Thailand and to the west is the Malaysian province of Perak whose jungles and mountains contain many “pagan” tribal traditions. Beyond Perak is Kedah with its larger Indian and Chinese populations and to the south is Trengganu where some Indonesian traits are still to be found. It is in this context that Malm’s study of music is made. The second study is “Professional Malay Story-Telling: Some Questions of Style and Presentation” by Amin Sweeney. In view of the hitherto almost exclusive concern with the content of such tales as those of Sang Kanchil or Pak Pandir, Sweeney throws some light on the form, style, and presentation of oral Malay literature, with special reference to that class of story-telling popularly known as penglipur lara, or what Winstedt termed “folk romances.”
