It is a story of young men who were to play a key role in freeing Europe from Nazi tyranny. From the D-Day landings in Normandy to fierce battles in Holland, some were taken prisoner by the enemy and sent to camps until freed at the end of the war in 1945. Included are eyewitness accounts of the Normandy landings, involvement of the RAF, Royal Navy and American forces, 10 Inter Allied Commando and the effect on local populations who got word of the actions in which this Commando took a major part. Formed from 10th Battalion Royal Marines and reinforced by volunteers from several parts of the British armed forces, they distinguished themselves by sheer determination and professionalism. Over 900 men served in or were attached to this Commando, keeping their overall strength up to 420. Many gave their lives never to return home so others might live to tell their story.

Book Commando

Download or read book Commando written by Chris Terrill and published by Random House. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chris Terrill is a man in search of his limit. He's 55 years old. He is not a soldier. He is being trained by the Royal Marines and he is going to Afghanistan. The only difference is that instead of a gun, Chris will be holding a camera and filming the whole ordeal for a major TV series. The Royal Marines Commando training base in Lympstone Devon, has a famous motto: '99.9% need not apply'. Of those who start training, after a very tough selection process, nearly 50% fail to make it through the most gruelling physical tests of any armed forces in the world in an eight month training regime. The elite who do eventually pass out are generally eighteen years old and at the peak of physical condition. But Chris Terrill is the exception: this book will tell of his heroic struggle to become the oldest man to win the coveted Royal Marines Commando Green Beret and enter the record books. And after six months of hell, what next? Chris will follow the raw recruits on a tour to Southern Afghanistan. He will tell the story in book and film of the fears and hopes of the youngsters as they are plunged into one of the planet's most dangerous wars in the outlaw mountain terrain of Helmand Province. He will tell of ferocious battles against the Taliban, of firefights, of jaw-dropping heroism, British sang froid and humour and tragedy as causalities are suffered -- all from the unique perspective of a civilian who has achieved the ultimate accolade: to be accepted as an honorary Royal Marines Commando. Commando is a brilliant account of modern war on the front line.

Book excerpt: 'Truly incredible' - Bear Grylls 'Barnstorming' - Sir Ranulph Fiennes The Royal Marine Commandos have become a byword for elite raiding skills and cutting-edge military operations. They are globally renowned, yet shrouded in mystery. Book Wearing the Green Beret

Download or read book Wearing the Green Beret written by Jake Olafsen and published by McClelland & Stewart Limited. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the authenticity of Jarhead and Bravo Two Zero and the straight-up narrative of Contact Charlie, this military memoir describes what really goes on in the training of an elite soldier and his tours in Afghanistan. In 2004, Jake Olafsen signed up for the Royal Marines Commandos. He left everything behind at home in Canada on the basis of a spur-of-the-moment decision. The Royal Marines have the toughest and longest basic training of any infantry unit in the world. For Olafson, this meant eight months of wet and cold in England and Wales. It was hell, but he came out with the four Commando qualities that the corps look for: courage, determination, unselfishness, cheerfulness in the face of adversity. Olafsen went on to serve for four years as a Commando in the Royal Marines, an elite military unit based in the United Kingdom. He went to Afghanistan twice: in 2006, he went to confront the Taliban in Helmand Province for six months, and in 2007, he was sent to do it all over again. His story is filled with good experiences, like the sense of accomplishment, patriotism, and camaraderie, and the opportunity to travel the world. But all good things come at a price. The sacrifices he made for the Corps are significant; he has killed the enemy and he has buried his friends. And in telling his story, Olafsen hopes that he can make sense of it all. This is an honest, gutsy story about the mud and the blood, the triumphs and the tragedies. From the Hardcover edition.

Book Amongst the Marines

Download or read book Amongst the Marines written by Steven Preece and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Preece was a Royal Marine Commando from 1983 to 1990, serving first at entry-level and then as a lance-corporal. Amongst the Marines is Steven's first-hand account of his years as an elite soldier, focusing directly on the excessive and often shocking lifestyle of the Marines during this time, and impact this had on his own personality and behaviour. Preece fulfilled his childhood ambition by earning the coveted Green Beret when he was 18. He was unaware, however, of the brutal rite of passage that awaited him and all the other 'pieces of skin' [new recruits]. Violence in the Marines, as Steven discovered, was not limited to the battlefield but a continual part of a pervasive culture of bullying and aggression. It did not take long for Preece to be accepted into this culture and to adopt it as his own. On duty he was fit, committed and loyal, while off duty he displayed a mammoth capacity for drinking, fighting and womanising. On home leave, Steven found it increasingly hard to adapt to civilian life. His drinking sessions in local pubs frequently ended in fights with the locals and even in violence against members of his own family. Preece earned a reputation amongst his fellow Marines for pranks and dangerous behaviour; and this eventually led him to be court-maritialled. To his relief and surprise, however, Preece was fully acquitted by the court. Amongst the Marines is an unflinching exposé of the culture of the Marines, from foul practical jokes and rough justice to the off-duty orgies of drink, sex and violence. It is a no-holds-barred account of the many shocking incidents Preece witnessed and participated in, from his first day as a new recruit to his exit from the Marines with his reputation intact and his scores settled once and for all.

Book Fire a Lethal Shot

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Fire a Lethal Shot written by Robert Driscoll and published by . This book was released on 2017-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 25th September 2011, three Royal Marines killed an injured Taliban fighter. Trialled by court-martial, two were acquitted, but one, Sergeant Alexander Blackman, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The ruling provoked outrage among fellow Marines, the establishment and much of the general public who felt that the verdict was an appalling miscarriage of justice. On that fateful day, Sgt Robert Driscoll, in accordance with army procedure, called in an Apache helicopter for air support amidst fierce fighting with a large group of Taliban insurgents, which were causing considerable injuries and fatalities to the two patrols of Royal Marines led by him and Sgt Blackman. With Sgt Blackman's blessing, Sgt Driscoll recalls in detail key events and factors leading to the killing of the fighter which, unbelievably, were not provided to the Court by Blackman's defence team. This is a compelling, unique insight into one of the most controversial rulings in recent military history and the real-life horrors of engaging at close quarters with the Taliban.
