Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling adult author of The Bear and the Nightingale makes her middle grade debut with a creepy, spellbinding ghost story destined to become a classic. After suffering a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie only finds solace in books. So when she happens upon a crazed woman at the river threatening to throw a book into the water, Ollie doesn't think—she just acts, stealing the book and running away. As she begins to read the slender volume, Ollie discovers a chilling story about a girl named Beth, the two brothers who both loved her, and a peculiar deal made with "the smiling man," a sinister specter who grants your most tightly held wish, but only for the ultimate price. Ollie is captivated by the tale until her school trip the next day to Smoke Hollow, a local farm with a haunting history all its own. There she stumbles upon the graves of the very people she's been reading about. Could it be the story about the smiling man is true? Ollie doesn't have too long to think about the answer to that. On the way home, the school bus breaks down, sending their teacher back to the farm for help. But the strange bus driver has some advice for the kids left behind in his care: "Best get moving. At nightfall they'll come for the rest of you." Nightfall is, indeed, fast descending when Ollie's previously broken digital wristwatch, a keepsake reminder of better times, begins a startling countdown and delivers a terrifying message: RUN. Only Ollie and two of her classmates heed the bus driver's warning. As the trio head out into the woods—bordered by a field of scarecrows that seem to be watching them—the bus driver has just one final piece of advice for Ollie and her friends: "Avoid large places. Keep to small." And with that, a deliciously creepy and hair-raising adventure begins.

Download or read book The Underneath written by Kathi Appelt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road. A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath. Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten’s one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O’Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love—and its opposite, hate—the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

Book MENC Handbook of Research on Music Learning Volume 1 Strategies

Download or read book MENC Handbook of Research on Music Learning Volume 1 Strategies written by Richard Colwell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MENC Handbook of Research on Music Learning, Volume 1: Strategies brings together the best and most current research on methods for music learning, focusing squarely on the professions empirical and conceptual knowledge of how students gain competence in music at various ages and in different contexts. The collection of chapters, written by the foremost figures active in the field, takes a broad theoretical perspective on current, critical areas of research, including music development, music listening and reading, motivation and self-regulated learning in music, music perception, and movement. The books companion volume, Applications, builds an extensive and solid position of practice upon the frameworks and research presented here. Throughout both volumes in this essential set, focus is placed on the musical knowledge and musical skills needed to perform, create, understand, reflect on, enjoy, value, and respond to music. A key point of emphasis rests on the relationship between music learning and finding meaning in music, and as music technology plays an increasingly important role in learning today, chapters move beyond exclusively formal classroom instruction into other forms of systematic learning and informal instruction. Either individually or paired with its companion Volume 2: Applications, this indispensable overview of this growing area of inquiry will appeal to students and scholars in Music Education, as well as front-line music educators in the classroom.

Book Refounding State Legitimacy When experiences and practices speak Volume 1

Download or read book Refounding State Legitimacy When experiences and practices speak Volume 1 written by SŽverine Bellina and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state is no longer the sole player in public action: it is now obliged to interact with civil society, the private sector and populations. This transition from "government" (a state monopoly) to "public governance" (public action with a plurality of actors) implies a certain repositioning. It is in the new relationship between the state and societies that the exercise of political power is called upon to find coherence and to restructure the legitimacy of the state. This diagnosis was the starting point for the reflections contained in this work. From the standpoint of legitimacy, the authors of this book have studied a series of experiences and practices, both in various countries around the world and within different international organisations. They offer a series of descriptive contributions designed to facilitate comprehension and analysis of the processes seeking to legitimise political power, according to a variety of contexts and the diversity of conceptions of power.

Book International Journal of Transmedia Literacy IJTL Vol 1 No 1 2015

Download or read book International Journal of Transmedia Literacy IJTL Vol 1 No 1 2015 written by AA. VV. and published by LED Edizioni Universitarie. This book was released on 2016-04-20T15:05:00+02:00 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forms of fiction and literature underwent a process of disembodiment and cross-fertilization during the revolution from the Gutenberg Galaxy (printed paper, mass distribution) to the McLuhan Galaxy (new media, hypertext, cooperative writing). The dimension of literacy has moved from a semioticallymeasured geometry to a dislocation and a deconstruction of contents and channels that give expression to new products. The impact of social media on narratology has redefined the meaning of readership and authorship. The author not only loses his/her traditional role, but becomes an icon of himself/herself, a collective-minded producer that is self-perceived through the extroflexed eye of the amniotic network in which he/she defines his/her narrative experience. Transmedia culture defines a new cross-networked and amniotic literacy, considering that we are not facing a simple adaptation of different narrative forms from one media to another: different media and languages participate and contribute to the construction of a transmedia environment. The first issue of the IJTL seeks to shed light on transmedia literacy according to the epistemological crisis of authorship and the new dimension of participation and relationship offered by both the Web and New Media. Moving from the state of the art, the aim is to investigate the interdisciplinary relations in the field of transmedia literacy, in order to favour a pattern recognition about theories, technologies, and social dimensions of the phenomena to offer a critical toolkit to understand and map out the emerging knowledge and practices created by this new field.
