Book The Majority minority a Qualitative Study Exploring Part time Community College Faculty Members Socialization and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Majority minority a Qualitative Study Exploring Part time Community College Faculty Members Socialization and Job Satisfaction written by Briant K. Coleman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated part-time community college faculty members' socialization and job satisfaction. Notwithstanding the fact that part-time faculty members make up the majority of faculty in community colleges, and that the number of part-time faculty members is likely to increase, their inclusion, leadership roles, and resources allocated by the college do not always lead to instructional success (Coalition on the Academic Workforce [CAW], 2012; Gappa, Austin, & Trice, 2007; U.S. Department of Education, 2012). Because of the steady growth and increased usage of part-time or adjunct faculty, there seems to be a need to focus on how these faculty members are socialized into the culture of the institution and to determine how these faculty members rate their own job satisfaction.

Book Part time Enrolled Community College Students

Download or read book Part time Enrolled Community College Students written by Janelle M. Green and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research used multiple case study methodology to explore the perceptions and experiences of part-time enrolled students at multicampus urban community colleges in the Southwest region of the United States. Of particular interest was how students defined success and their perception of what it took to achieve success, the utilization rate of student success resources, challenges encountered that caused a student to consider stopping out, the quality of relationships and connections part-time students had with faculty and staff, and the experience students had navigating institutional systems and processes. This study was conducted at a large, public, urban, multicampus community college in Texas. Participants in the study included part-time enrolled students who had earned 50% of the credits required to complete their identified academic goal. The data collection steps included setting the boundaries for the study, collecting survey questionnaire responses, conducting semistructured interviews, reviewing documents pertaining to institutional student academic progress rates, and maintaining a researcher journal for reflexive journaling. Deductive and inductive coding was utilized to organize data and identify themes. Key themes that emerged in this study’s findings included sense of purpose matters for persistence; time constraints and lack of information prevent utilization of resources and involvement; connections to faculty were crucial; seeing others similar to self was validating and motivating; COVID had negative impacts on connection, sense of belonging, and educational experience; advisors were heavily relied on for guidance and connection to resources; flexibility, support systems, and time management were critical for success; and personal life, exhaustion and burn out, finances, and lack of direction were challenges that impacted persistence.

Book The Overlooked Majority

Download or read book The Overlooked Majority written by Ke'Ana Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges play a crucial role in the educational outcomes of the communities they serve. Two-year colleges often have fewer staff than their four-year counterparts, many of whom are fulfilling more than one functional area. As such, it is important that these professionals are prepared to perform their roles well and understand the needs of the students they serve. According to research, student affairs is made up of 80-85% of field trained practitioners, or those who enter the field without a graduate degree in higher education. More than 50% leave the field within the first five years and unsuccessful socialization contributes to attrition among this population. Despite previous studies on graduate students and new professionals, there was a gap in the research concerning field-trained practitioners and community colleges. To address this gap, this phenomenological study explored the lived socialization experiences of seven new field-trained community college student affairs practitioners. Using Van Maanen & Schein's (1979) organizational socialization theory as the theoretical framework, the study revealed the following findings about the institutional socialization process: (1) a lack of collective on boarding and role clarity, (2) socialization agents were key to effective role acquisition, and (3) the socialization process inspired passion but discouraged career confidence. Intentional on boarding, synergistic supervision, peer support, and integration into the larger profession are keys to the successful socialization of field-trained practitioners. These socialization tools along with ongoing training and development help foster the sense of belonging and growth potential needed to increase new employee retention.

Book excerpt: This phenomenological study explores what it means to teach part-time in community colleges in the United States. The increasing use of part-time faculty in community colleges and the concomitant emergence of a two-tiered faculty are discussed. The study examines the nature of part-time work in the United States, thus providing insight into practices in higher education. A discussion of challenges women continue to face in the workplace in general, and academia in particular, provide a background for understanding issues raised by study participants. Through the voices of six women, the study moves behind current statistical data to reveal the experiences, disappointments, joys, and motivations of part-time faculty. The findings illuminate current practices, highlight the importance of the department chair in affecting part-time faculty members' experiences, and challenge us to consider working conditions and relationships in our own academic communities.
