Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Pope has often been termed the first truly professional poet in English. He had an acute awareness of traditions he had inherited and a clear vision of where he stood in literary history. In this representative selection of Pope's most important work Pat Rogers presents all the major poems and a characteristic sample of his prose, including satires, pamphlets, and periodical writing. Pope's criticism is represented by his preface to his edition of Shakespeare, and the personal side of his work is illustrated by short pasages from his conversations with Joseph Spence and examples of his wide-ranging correspondence.

Book The Rape of the Lock and Other Major Writings

Download or read book The Rape of the Lock and Other Major Writings written by Alexander Pope and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Pope (1688-1744) was the greatest English poet of his age, whose acerbic insights into human nature have entered the language, and whose verse still astonishes with its energy and inventiveness centuries after his death. This new selection of Pope's work follows the path of his poetic genius over his lifetime. It contains early poems including the masterly mock-epic 'The Rape of the Lock', which satirizes a notorious society scandal through glorious heroic couplets, the brilliantly aphoristic 'An Essay on Criticism' and excerpts from his translation of the Iliad. Later poems represented include Pope's ironic adaptations of Horace's Epistles, Satires and Odes, and the remarkable 'Dunciad', a stinging attack on his literary rivals and the mediocrity of Grub Street hacks. Here too are selected prose works and letters from Pope to his contemporaries such as John Gay and Jonathan Swift.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, University of Trier, course: Alexander Pope, language: English, abstract: “Pope is the standout poet of the eighteenth century. A master of form and register, a maestro of metre, and a doyden of wit, Pope will remain among the most read and most imitated writers in the English language” (Budge 2009, 54.) Alexander Pope is often referred to as one of the greatest critics of all times. He is a great author and his poems are commonly known in the world of Literature. His satirical style is brilliant and exemplified in many of his poems. In the following, I am going to analyze the Augustan poem “The Rape of the Lock”, specifically in terms of its satirical elements. Therefore, I want to start with a look at a few definitions of the Satire. Next, I will go into more detail by defining the Augustan Satire as a subgenre of Satire. After validating these two term’s definitions, there will be the actual analysis. Due to limitations of space, however, I cannot consider all of the satirical elements of the poem, and have decided to put my main focus on the role of Belinda.

Book excerpt: Alexander Pope was, at one time, the world's most celebrated poet. His trenchant satirical works - in which the foibles of all the critics, hacks and bad poets of his day are exploded - and his masterful heroi-comic poem The Rape of the Lock continue to inspire generations of writers and readers to this day. Alongside his more prominent poetical production, Pope engaged with some of the sharpest wits of his era - including Jonathan Swift and John Gay, the author of The Beggar's Opera - in writing a number of satirical prose works, of which Scriblerus is perhaps the greatest achievement. As he prepares to become father for the first time, the scholar Cornelius is determined to settle on nothing less than a child of the "e;learned sex"e; - a boy - and give him the most thorough education so that he can become the greatest critic who ever lived. An account of the birth, the infancy, the schooling, the diet-planning, the unconventional love affairs and the attainments of this child prodigy, The Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus is surely the funniest imaginary biography ever written.
