Book John Major An Unsuccessful Prime Minister

Download or read book John Major An Unsuccessful Prime Minister written by Kevin Hickson and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year marks the twentieth anniversary of one of the most momentous general elections this country has ever seen. John Major's defeat in 1997 ended a record eighteen years of Tory government, prompting accusations of failure and ignominy. A controversial leader, Major oversaw numerous crises in international and domestic policy. Between 1990 and 1997, he presided over Britain's participations in the Gulf War, the start of the Northern Ireland peace process, the Maastricht Treaty negotiations and, famously, Black Wednesday and Britain's exit from the ERM. Towards the end, Major's government was split over Europe and ridden with allegations of sleaze. Widely criticised by the media and politicians from all parties, Major went on to be crushed by Tony Blair and New Labour in the 1997 general election. An Unsuccessful Prime Minister? is the first wide-ranging appraisal of John Major's government in nearly two decades. This book reconsiders the role of John Major as Prime Minister and the policy achievements of his government. Major's government faced many more constraints and left behind a more enduring legacy than his critics allowed at the time or since.

Book excerpt: From prison to premiership glory; this is Marlion Pickett’s extraordinary story. It’s the third quarter in the biggest game of the season. A young man lines up for goal. The 100,000 strong crowd leaps to its feet and roars as Marlion Pickett sends the ball soaring through the goalposts for his first ever major, celebrated by every teammate, a tradition upheld even on Grand Final day. It was the 2019 AFL Grand Final, and Richmond’s Marlion Pickett was making history as the first player in over 50 years to debut on that ‘one day in September’. Marlion helped the Tigers thrash the Greater Western Sydney Giants in their debut grand final appearance and was judged third best on ground, only six days after steering Richmond’s VFL team with his best on ground performance to their nail biting Grand Final victory. Marlion Pickett’s extraordinary story of redemption is a true fairy tale. The tale of a man who came back from the brink to triumph on Australian sport’s biggest stage, a long-held dream come true. What’s even more remarkable about Marlion’s journey is how this young, troubled Aboriginal kid from Western Australia ever got his chance in the first place. A story all too sadly familiar – about drugs, crime, violence and time spent in jail – but also about a life picked up piece by piece through his own belief in himself and those around him who believed in him too. Belief also takes us inside the South Fremantle and Richmond Football clubs – clubs that have made stars and cult heroes out of other Indigenous players; clubs willing to overlook a talented kid’s troubled past to give him a chance. We meet the fellow players and support network who stood by Marlion’s side as he fought back against injury and the doubters and proudly ran onto the field at the MCG. Marlion’s resilience and strength is inspirational. His is an unforgettable Australian story of triumph over adversity. Foreword by Brendan Gale, CEO Richmond Football Club and Damien Hardwick, Senior Coach Richmond Football Club '[Belief reads] like a Steinbeck novel cum Tarantino film due to the vividly unfolding drama on almost every page.' Book The Foundations of the British Conservative Party

Download or read book The Foundations of the British Conservative Party written by Bradley W. Hart and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, is now at the helm of the first coalition government in the UK since WWII. His 2010 victory came after great efforts to change his party's image, moving it away from Margaret Thatcher's pro-privatization rhetoric and asserting that it was "the party of the NHS" and the advocate of the "Big Society." This collection of essays, written by leading scholars in British political history, offers insights into the Conservative Party's staying power in spite of great social and political changes in the UK and the world. It looks at how the Party has functioned historically and what its future might be, discussing its ideology and identity. Organized around key themes such as the conservative ideal, conservatism and the imperial outlook, party politics, and the impact of Thatcherism, the essays examine how conservatism has remained relevant and what it means to be conservative today. An accessible, concise overview, the book will be a primer for anyone studying British politics and political history.

Book Before and Beyond the Big Society

Download or read book Before and Beyond the Big Society written by Joseph Forde and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Milbank's theology has shaped much modern political thinking both within and without the Church. In Before and Beyond the 'Big Society', Joseph Forde presents the first study devoted exclusively to John Milbank's theology of welfare, and how it has influenced policy in the Church of England since 2008. By examining the favourable response the Church gave to the 'Big Society' project in 2010-12, Forde shows that Milbank's Blue Socialist fingerprint increasingly dominates. However, this theology has not evolved in a vacuum and Forde expertly places it in its historical and theoretical context. He offers a detailed critical discussion of Milbank's own critique of what has been the mainstream (Temple) Anglican theology of welfare in the Church of England since the 1940s, and a fresh contribution to the assessment of Anglican social theology. Finally, he demonstrates how Milbank's ideas have been furthered by other influential Anglicans. It is this influence that will carry the greatest implications for the Church of England's policy on welfare going forward, making this study relevant to all who care about its contribution to the provision of welfare.
