Book The Maitland Quarto Manuscript

Download or read book The Maitland Quarto Manuscript written by William Alexander Craigie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maitland Quarto Manuscript: Containing Poems by Sir Richard Maitland, Arbuthnot, and Others In this edition, in which the full contents of the manu script are printed for the first time, the original has been followed page for page, and the different styles of hand writing have been indicated by the use of different types. Those pieces which are written in the Scottish hand are printed in ordinary roman type, with the contractions expanded in italics; those in the Italian hand are closely reproduced in italic lettering, with the few contractions retained. An endeavour has also been made to reproduce the more ornamental hands, the capital letters, and scribal ourishes, and in general to convey as distinct an idea of the appearance of the original as could readily be done in print. With a very few exceptions the occasional errors of the scribe have not been corrected in the text, but are pointed out in the notes at the end of the volume. Book Sappho in Early Modern England

Download or read book Sappho in Early Modern England written by Harriette Andreadis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sappho in Early Modern England, Harriette Andreadis examines public and private expressions of female same-sex sexuality in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Before the language of modern sexual identities developed, a variety of discourses in both literary and extraliterary texts began to form a lexicon of female intimacy. Looking at accounts of non-normative female sexualities in travel narratives, anatomies, and even marital advice books, Andreadis outlines the vernacular through which a female same-sex erotics first entered verbal consciousness. She finds that "respectable" women of the middle classes and aristocracy who did not wish to identify themselves as sexually transgressive developed new vocabularies to describe their desires; women that we might call bisexual or lesbian, referred to in their day as tribades, fricatrices, or "rubsters," emerged in erotic discourses that allowed them to acknowledge their sexuality and still evade disapproval.

Book Biblical Epics in Late Antiquity and Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Biblical Epics in Late Antiquity and Anglo Saxon England written by Patrick McBrine and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical poetry, written between the fourth and eleventh centuries, is an eclectic body of literature that disseminated popular knowledge of the Bible across Europe. Composed mainly in Latin and subsequently in Old English, biblical versification has much to tell us about the interpretations, genre preferences, reading habits, and pedagogical aims of medieval Christian readers. Biblical Epics in Late Antiquity and Anglo-Saxon England provides an accessible introduction to biblical epic poetry. Patrick McBrine’s erudite analysis of the writings of Juvencus, Cyprianus, Arator, Bede, Alcuin, and more reveals the development of a hybridized genre of writing that informed and delighted its Christian audiences to such an extent it was copied and promoted for the better part of a millennium. The volume contains many first-time readings and discussions of poems and passages which have long lain dormant and offers new evidence for the reception of the Bible in late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Download or read book Cultural Repertoires written by G. J. Dorleijn and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is apparent that every linguistic and literary tradition will wish to distinguish broad periods in its historical evolution. One way of demarcating such periods is by isolating and identifying dominant repertoires of texts, styles or types, which may be seen as preserving repositories of material, promoting literary models, privileging formal constraints, or inspiring theoretical reflections - or all of these. The present collection of studies represents the results of a colloquium held at the University of Groningen in 2001. The contributions range widely in area, time, and theme: from general theory of acceptation into the canon to particular case studies; from overall descriptions of cultural repertoires to their very manufacture; from Ancient Mesopotamia to the European avant-garde - taking in Homeric Greece, the Arabic world, the Middle Ages, Renaissance Humanism, and modern Dutch literature along the way.

Book Controversial Poetry 1400 1625

Download or read book Controversial Poetry 1400 1625 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversial poetry played a crucial role in dealing with religious, political, and scholarly conflicts from 1400 until 1625. This volume analyses roles and functions of Latin, Italian, Dutch, German, Scots, and Hungarian poetry in specific historical controversies. A media theory of poetical impact is proposed by Franz-Josef Holznagel and Dieuwke van der Poel. Levente Seláf, Philipp Steinkamp, and Guillaume van Gemert examine the genres sung in wars, and in rulers’ controversies. Judith Keßler, Dirk Coigneau, Juliette Groenland, and Regina Toepfer analyse how female and male rhetoricians and humanists use verse in religious, municipal, and educational conflicts. Signe Rotter-Broman, Samuel Pakucs Willcocks†, and Alasdair A. MacDonald explain how reception strategies can shape cultural and political identities.
