Book excerpt: The Buddhapadamangala is an anonymous work in the corpus of Pali literature transmitted in Siam. Its starting point is the conventional description of the wheel mark on the soles of the feet of a Buddha, following the Pali tradition which presents auspicious signs (mangala) as the "retinue" (parivara) of the classical wheel. The text lists and explains one hundred and eight auspicious signs, interpreting them in terms of the teachings of the Buddha, with the result that the feet of the Master are transformed into an intricate map of his teachings, which are set symbolically in a many-layered universe.
Download or read book A New Course in Reading Pali written by James W. Gair and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended and serve as an introduction to the reading of Pali texts. For that purpose, it uses authentic readings especially compiled for the purpose drawn largely from Theravada canonical works, both prose and poetry. The reading are in Roman script, and carefully graded for difficulty, but they have also been selected so that each of them is a meaningful and complete reading in itself, so as to introduce some basic concepts and ways of thought of Theravada Buddhism. This book thus offers and opportunity to become acquainted with the ways in which the teachings of the Buddha are embodied in the language, a sense that it impossible to determine from English translations. The book contains 12 lessons. Each of them has three parts: (1) a set of basic readings and an accompanying glossary, (2) grammatical notes on the forms in the less, and (3) a set of further readings with its own glossary. The further readings introduce no new grammatical points, but reinforce ones already presented and give further practice in them. The work concludes, fittingly, with the Buddhaês first sermon, The Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta. A cumulative glossary and index to the grammar is also provided. The text has been used successfully in its preliminary form at several universities, but it may also be used for self-study.
Download or read book Mahavamsa written by Mahānāma and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahavamsa is a famous historical treatise in Buddhism, written by Mahanama in Pali language. It deserves a special notice on aacount of its being so highly important for the religious history of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) . The literary questions connected with Mahavamsa & the development of the historical tradition in Sri Lanka have been thoroughly discussed in this text. However, the great importance of Mahavamsa as an historical work, which helped to settle the conflicting & confusing dates of Indian history, is so well established that a dissertation on the subject would seem superfluous. The specific feature of this edition is that it contains original Pali text with revised English translation. Besides, the work is also appendices. Hope, this new edition of its kind will duly help the young researches as well as readers of pali and buddhism to understand the real importance of this old historical text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mahavastu, Vol. 1 We may expect some definite conclusion as to the real origin of Buddhist Sanskrit when Professor Franklin Edgerton, of Harvard University, who has been engaged on a study of this dialect for some time, publishes the result of his researches. Meanwhile we may quote an opinion which he expressed in 1936. The proto - canonical Prakrit on which Buddhist hybrid Sanskrit was based, was a dialect closely related to both Ardhamagadhi and Apabhramsa, but not identical with either.' Pali works are cited by the abbreviated form of their titles used in the Pali d104 Society's pali-english Dictionary.
