Download or read book The Pied Piper of Hamelin written by Russell Brand and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this first book in Russell Brand’s Trickster Tales series, the famed comedian, actor, and bestselling author delivers a hilarious retelling of an old fairytale favorite that will appeal to adults and children alike. Once upon a time, long ago, in a time that seemed, to those present, exactly like now except their teeth weren’t so clean and more things were wooden, there was a town called Hamelin. The people of Hamelin were a pompous bunch who loved themselves and their town so much that if it were possible they would have spent all day zipped up in a space suit smelling their own farts. But space suits hadn’t been invented yet so they couldn’t. Then one day without warning a gang of rats bowled into the town and began causing a right rumpus… So begins Russell Brand’s wildly funny and surprisingly wise retelling of the classic tale The Pied Piper of Hamelin. Whether you’re a kid or a grown-up kid, you’ll be chuckling the whole way through this zany story that bypasses Brand’s more adult humor for the outrageous, the madcap, and the just plain silly. Maybe you’ve heard about the Pied Piper before, with his strange music and those pompous townspeople and pesky rats. Or maybe you haven’t. But one thing is for sure: you’ve never heard it quite like this.

Download or read book We Don t Go Back written by Howard David Ingham and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret, strange, dark, impure and dissonant...Enter the haunted landscapes of folk horror, a world of pagan village conspiracies, witch finders, and teenagers awakening to evil; of dark fairy tales, backwoods cults and obsolete technologies. Beginning with the classics Night of the Demon, Witchfinder General, The Wicker Man and Blood on Satan's Claw, We Don't Go Back surveys the genre of screen folk horror from across the world. Travelling from Watership Down to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, with every stop inbetween, We Don't Go Back is a thoughtful, funny and essential overview of folk horror in TV and cinema."A beautiful rumination on the dark films and television that shaped me and a generation of odd children, for good or ill, worth a year of your time, because you won't just read the book, you'll feel a burning desire to watch everything mentioned within." - Robin Ince"A comprehensive, accessible and often riotously funny tome weaving together folk horror in all its forms, from British television to the American backwoods, from Eastern European fairytales to the vengeful ghosts of East Asia. Ingham explores uncanny landscapes haunted by things buried, old cultures converging with the reluctance of contemporary reason, that very tension that gives his book its name. He attempts to both define folk horror and free it from definition, creating the ultimate guide to the genre's manifestations on film and offering a convincing argument as to why the genre resonates so compellingly with people today." - Kier-La Janisse, author of House of Psychotic Women

Download or read book In Search of the Pied Piper written by Radu Florescu and published by Athena PressPub Company. This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known principally for his bestselling In Search of Dracula, Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Radu Florescu now takes us on a magical tour of the origins of the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, exploring both the myth and the history that has captivated so many since the Middle Ages, and has been immortalized in Browning's famous poem. There are intriguing insights and speculations on the genuine history on which the poet relied and an explanation for his choice of Transylvania as the end of the child exodus from Hamelin town. Most plausible is the author's adoption of the history of a German military leader, leading the youths on a colonizing expedition to the Baltic lands where they all perished in a shipwreck. The author also links the story of a genuine rat infestation in Hamelin with the child exodus - a good opportunity to examine that pest's nuisance value from the time of the great plague to the German siege of Stalingrad in World War II. All in all a thoroughly intriguing and well-written book. Dr. Florescu, Professor of History emeritus at Boston College, Consul emeritus of Romania for New England. He received his BA, MA and B.Lit. degrees from Oxford University (Christ Church College) and his Ph.D. in History from Indiana University. He is currently Director of the East European Research Center at Boston College and the author of numerous works on East European and Romanian history.

Download or read book The Pied Piper of Tucson written by Don Moser and published by Signet Book. This book was released on 1967 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Life and Time magazines that turned a local story from Tucson, Arizona, into a national abomination. Reporters came from all over, to be sure, but on March 4, 1966, Life printed an ominous photo of the desert landscape where three girls had disappeared and the story of Charles Howard Schmid, Jr., or "Smitty," became international news. He had been arrested four months earlier on November 11, just after marrying a fifteen-year-old girl whom he'd met on a blind date. The article was published even before the juries in two separate trials had decided his fate. Dubbed "The Pied Piper of Tucson," for his ability to get girls to fall for him, he stood five feet, four inches tall, but added three more inches by padding his stack-heeled cowboy boots with rags and tin cans. He also dyed his reddish-brown hair black, used pancake make-up, whitened his lips, and applied a fake mole to his left cheek-a "beauty" mark. Arrogant and narcissistic, he came from a wealthy family, so he used the niceties he could buy to impress young high school girls. He adopted the droopy-eyed look associated with Elvis, his idol, and acquired a rock musician's mystique. His tiny house on his parents' property was the scene of many parties. Tucson society was not merely shaken by the murders of three of their young women but by what the details of those murders revealed about its adolescent population-sex clubs, drinking parties, blackmail, cover-ups for murder, and even connections with the crime underworld. Parents suddenly became more strict, more aware now that their kids weren't safe and maybe weren't even behaving properly. When kids looked to someone like Charles Schmid for answers, there was something terribly wrong.
