Book Words from the Window Seat

Download or read book Words from the Window Seat written by Taylor Tippett and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight attendant Taylor Tippett had just finished beverage service and was sitting in the back of a Boeing 737 when she had a revelation: How can I show kindness to these passengers if I can't show it to myself? She grabbed a tiny notepad and a Sharpie and wrote a simple message that would change her life: "Be kind to yourself." Before she had time to think about it, Taylor taped the note to a window, posted a picture, and then left the slip of paper in a seat-back pocket for someone on the next flight to find. What started as a personal project to encourage herself and others soon became a viral sensation. In Words from the Window Seat, Taylor shares stories of her travels, daily life, and interactions with people of all kinds, anchoring each chapter around a note she's left for a stranger to find. As she takes you from Chicago to Paris to Barcelona on planes, trains, and even a skateboard, you'll: Learn how to embody love through little acts of kindness Discover the small moments of magic in the everyday Find ways to embrace your authentic self With charm, inspiration, and plenty of whimsy, Taylor reminds us that even in a weary world, it's possible to celebrate the beauty in each person's unique story--and make an impact that goes deeper than you'll ever know. Praise for Words from the Window Seat: "These pages will empower you to explore the many opportunities we have each day to encounter light and share love with others while traveling. Whether traveling by air or traveling through life. This book is an encouragement to be present in the everyday, no matter what comes your way." --Morgan Harper Nichols, bestselling author of All Along You Were Blooming

The book provides a richly detailed ethnographic study of magical belief and the body whilst paying particular attention to the polyvalent meanings of bodily images and metaphors as they are used in numerous contexts of magic.

Book Gods of Play

Download or read book Gods of Play written by Kristiaan Aercke and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1994-08-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the close connections between politics, culture, art, and philosophy in seventeenth-century Europe. As an emblem of this interrelationship, the author has chosen the phenomenon of the “splendid festive performance” of spectacular plays and operas given at absolutist courts in Rome, Madrid, Paris, Versailles, and Vienna between 1631 and 1668. Gods of Play fills voids in the scholarly literature on the seventeenth-century, on absolutism, on courtly theatricality, and on the philosophy of play. Aercke demonstrates that such splendid performances were not just frivolous entertainment for the courtly class but were serious activities with far-ranging political consequences.

  • Author : Daniel Cavicchi

Download or read book Tramps Like Us written by Daniel Cavicchi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As rock critics have noted in the past, Bruce Springsteen's songs exist in a world of their own--they have their own settings, characters, words, and images. It is a world that even those who know only a handful of Springsteen's lyrics can instantly recognize, a world of highways and factories, loners and underdogs, hot rods and patrol cars. And it is a world that stretches far beyond the New Jersey state line. Indeed, Springsteen's attention to the ideals and struggles of ordinary Americans has significantly influenced American popular culture and public debate. As a rock-and-roll troubadour, "the Boss" speaks not only for his many fans but to them, and often with a directness or sincerity that no other performer can match. But what can be said of the fans themselves? Why and how do they relate to Springsteen's words and music? Based on three years of ethnographic research amid Springsteen's fans, and informed by the author's own experiences and impressions as a fan, Daniel Cavicchi's Tramps Like Us is an interdisciplinary study of the ways in which ordinary people form special, sustained attachments to a particular singer/songwriter and his songs, and of how these attachments function in people's lives. An "insider's narrative" about Springsteen fans--who they are, what they do, and why they do it--this book also investigates the phenomenon of fandom in general. The text oscillates between fans' stories and ideas and Cavicchi's own anecdotes, commentary, and analysis. It challenges the stereotypes of fans as obsessive, delusional, and even mentally ill, and explores fandom as a normal socio-cultural activity. Ultimately, this book argues that music fandom is a useful and meaningful behavior that enables us to shape identities, create communities, and make sense of the world--both Bruce's and our own.

Download or read book After the Accident written by Julian Armitstead and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A child's life is snuffed out by a joy-rider. Four years on, the parents and the young lad meet. In this award-winning drama, writer Julian Armitstead explores the process of restorative or reparative justice, by which victim and offender are brought face to face, in a common endeavour to repair the harm caused by crime. Combining powerful naturalism with a strongly expressive thread, the drama unpicks the web of shared emotional devastation wrought on parents and killer alike. The strength of Armitstead's writing lies in his compassionate objectivity: he draws his characters and the dilemmas they face with real clarity, showing their all too human weaknesses, but also the strength of their desire to find a way forward with their lives.

Download or read book The Lady of Zamalek written by Ashraf El-Ashmawi and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning twentieth-century Egyptian history and opening with the true story of a prominent Cairo businessman’s murder, this rags-to-riches story wondrously combines real-life events with fiction, told by a “magical storyteller” It was in the spring of 1927 that Cairo's attention was captured by the shocking murder of prominent businessman Solomon Cicurel in his Nile-side villa in the upscale Zamalek district. It was a burglary that went wrong, and four culprits were soon arrested. Their trial was concluded swiftly, their punishments were decisive, and society breathed a sigh of relief. In Ashraf El-Ashmawi's telling, there was a fifth accomplice, Abbas, who fled to his home in the countryside to lay low until the murder trial blew over. However, he did not escape empty-handed and kept stolen documents from Cicurel's villa, ones that he imagined would lead him to a hidden safe. Abbas hatched a plan to return to the capital, find the safe, and make his fortune. The first step was to place his sister Zeinab with Cicurel's widow, Paula. Abbas’s rags-to-riches story unfolds as a tale of modern Egypt, taking in the Second World War, the 1952 revolution and rise of Nasser, the 1967 war, and the Sadat and Mubarak eras. Spanning the 1920s to the 1990s, El-Ashmawi deftly weaves together history with fiction in this intriguing English-language debut.
