Book The Disobedient Writer

Download or read book The Disobedient Writer written by Nancy A. Walker and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, women who aspired to write had to enter a largely male literary tradition that offered few, if any, literary forms in which to express their perspectives on lived experience. Since the nineteenth century, however, women writers and readers have been producing "disobedient" counter-narratives that, while clearly making reference to the original texts, overturn their basic assumptions. This book looks at both canonical and non-canonical works, over a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres, that offer counter-readings of familiar Western narratives. Nancy Walker begins by probing women's revisions of two narrative traditions pervasive in Western culture: the biblical story of Adam and Eve, and the traditional fairy tales that have served as paradigms of women's behavior and expectations. She goes on to examine the works of a wide range of writers, from contemporaries Marilynne Robinson, Ursula Le Guin, Anne Sexton, Fay Weldon, Angela Carter, and Margaret Atwood to precursors Caroline Kirkland, Fanny Fern, Mary De Morgan, Mary Louisa Molesworth, Edith Nesbit, and Evelyn Sharp.

As a watcher, Gerwalta Faust allows werewolves no trust. Andreas Baron may be roguishly handsome and deceptively charming, but that makes him no less an animal. Thoughts at the top of her mind as they seek a missing member of Andreas's pack, and a constant reminder that her growing attraction is not only irrational, it's a betrayal to her kind. But how can she be true to her purpose if she is not also true to her heart? Andreas despises the women who rule the Black Forest with silver fists and dark souls, and having to sojourn beyond its borders beside a watcher hardly thrills. What does, however, is finding in Gerwalta a creature of compassion and intelligence, one who begins to look beyond his fur to see the man within. Could a watcher ever mate an alpha? Will his heart give him any choice? Even as they see out their mission in far-off lands, an immutable truth awaits at home: it's forbidden for a watcher and a wolf to love, and the punishment is death. The complete trilogy of the tragic love between the infamous Red Riding Hood and the King of Werewolves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming-animal is a key concept for Deleuze and Guattari; the ambiguous idea of the animal as human and nonhuman life infiltrates all of Deleuze's work. These 16 essays apply Deleuze's work to analysing television, film, music, art, drunkenness, mourning, virtual technology, protest, activism, animal rights and abolition. Each chapter questions the premise of the animal and critiques the centrality of the human. This collection creates new questions about what the age of the Anthropocene means by 'animal' and analyses and explores examples of the unclear boundaries between human and animal.
