Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magic of Malaya Hose who are familiar with the bland pervasiveness of the Chinese in the Malay Peninsula will find nothing strange in the existence of Li Wang. He was a Chinese exactly like other Chinese. If you had seen him in a town you had not remarked him had you seen him on a lalang plain you had seen nothing in him if you had seen him cutting up timber in a jungle you had been conscious that there was a Chinese cutting up timber in the jungle and that was the end of it. Nothing remarkable about him - nothing of which to take hold, nothing to make you say, Hullo, there is Li Wang. No, when you saw him you said, There is a Chinaman. Pervasive merely, z. Book excerpt: Anthropologist Walter Skeat's Malay Magic: Being an Introduction to the Folklore and Popular Religion of the Malay Peninsula was written to introduce the reader to the Malay people, of what is now known as Malaysia, and their customs and popular religion. The book opens with the theory of creation as understood and passed down by the peoples of the Malay Peninsula. This marks a logical starting point for a detailed discussion of the beliefs of the Malays. The book proceeds to tackle a wide range of Malay folklore and legend, all of which serve to further the reader's understanding of the Malays. Topics include nature; man's place in the universe; man's relationship with the supernatural world; Malay gods, spirits, and ghosts; and finally magic rites connected to nature and affecting man are all subjects to which the author has dedicated chapters. The book is thorough, and if not completely exhaustive, still fairly all encompassing of the religious and spiritual beliefs of the Malay. Illustrations are present to better illuminate some of the text. Skeat's knowledge of the topic is impressive. At over 700 pages, this is a large volume that is meant to be slowly digested. No prior knowledge of the Malay people is required before endeavoring to read this book, and the patient reader will be rewarded with a wonderful picture of the Malays. With assertive prose and a logical path through the subject matter, Skeat has made this work a joy to read. Malay Magic will appeal to anybody interested in the people of the Malay peninsula, as well as avid readers of folklore and students of anthropology. While now more than one hundred years old, this book is still an excellent introduction to a fascinating group of people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Panglima Muda: A Romance of Malaya The prau Besar moved slowly, almost noiselessly, up the stream. The sharp, greaseless squeak and ever continuing groan of the rattan oarlocks might have been mistaken by the uninitiated as an evidence of animal life in the impenetrable green arch above. The six Malays hardly bent their backs as they cut the water almost vertically with their spear-shaped oar-blades, only pausing in their task from time to time to dash a handful of tepid water on the locks, whenever the gradually increasing volume of ear-piercing sounds threatened to awake their sleeping passengers. From under a small half-deck, shaded by a palm leaf cadjang, arranged like the detached roof of barn, with openings fore and aft, projected two pairs of shooting boots. The old punghulo, or chief, in the stern, directed the boat in silence, casting at intervals swift, searching glances into the dense jungle on either side. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Malay Archipelago O Hundred shores of happy climes! How swiftly streamed ye by the bark! At times the whole sea burned - at times With wakes of fire we tore the dark. New stars all night above the brim Of waters lightened into view; They climbed as quickly, for the rim Changed every moment as we flew. We came to warmer waves, and deep Across the boundless East we drove, Where those long swells of breaker sweep The nutmeg rocks, and isles of clove. For one fair Vision ever fled Down the waste waters day and night, And still we followed where she led, In hope to gain upon her flight. Book An Illustrated Guide to the Federated Malay States Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Illustrated Guide to the Federated Malay States Classic Reprint written by Cuthbert Woodville Harrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Guide to the Federated Malay States But the Portuguese themselves were being attacked by the Dutch. In 1606 the Dutch eet bombarded Malacca and nearly captured it and in 1641 the city finally fell. On this occasion the Malays assisted the Dutch from Johor, where the Malay kingdom had managed to raise its head again as the Portuguese power waned. Holland dominated the Malay East from 1641, but made no attempt to do more than maintain trading settlements. Some poor adminis tration of the Peninsula was carried on by the Malay princes in Pahang, Johor and Perak. It was about this time that a band of Malays from Sumatra effected a peaceful penetration to the hinterland of Malacca and established themselves, a highly democratic community, in what is now the Negri Sembilan. These were a remarkable people. They seem to have fraternised with the wild tribes they found in the country, and to have settled down to possess it both without fighting to get it and without fighting to keep it. Probably their numbers and organisation were too formidable for Peninsular Malay princes to molest. Besides this these princes began to be harried by the far more warlike Bugis Malays from the Malay Archipelago, and though the Dutch supported them against the Bugis the struggles between the two were absorbing. The specifics - whether in the form of pills, powders, potions, or plasters - will heal every sore, restore sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, hair to the bald, or work any other miracle at an extremely moderate cost. Babies clamour for these nostrums - if you can believe the pictured stories that meet your eye at every turn - fat old women simper at their recovered youth and slimness, after a second dose, and consumptive youths smash "try-your-strength" machines, in the vigour inspired by a single bottle of some famed elixir. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Court Kampong: Being Tales Sketches of Native Life in the Malay Peninsula Peninsula, and in the consequent spread of modern ideas, progress, and civilisation. I feel this so strongly that, in common with many of my countrymen, I am content to devote the best years of my life to an attempt to bring about some of those revolutions in facts and in ideas which we hold to be for the ultimate good of the race. None the less, however, this book has been written in a spirit of the deepest sympathy with all classes of Malays, and I have striven throughout to appreciate the native point of view, and to judge the people and their actions by their own standards, rather than by those of a White Man living in their midst. With regard to the tales themselves, many of them have been told to me by natives, and all are more or less founded on fact. Some of the incidents re lated have come under my personal observation, and for the truth of these I can vouch. For the accuracy of the remaining stories others are responsible, and I can only be held answerable for the framing of the pictures.
