There is one conventional aspect of modern English verse which transgresses the rules of clear perception and does much to impede natural expression. That is the custom of beginning verse invariably with a capital. This tends to interrupt the continuity of thought demanded by the continuity of the sentence. The more logical Latin mind has adopted the sensible rule, exemplified in modern French and Spanish verse, of limiting the capital letters to the beginning of the sen tence. And Since free-verse particularly demands this continuity in expression, the reform has been. Adopted for the poems of that character contained in this volume.
