Download or read book Maelstrom written by Peter Watts and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in the Rifters Trilogy, Hugo Award-winning author Peter Watts' Maelstrom is a terrifying explosion of cyberpunk noir. This is the way the world ends: A nuclear strike on a deep sea vent. The target was an ancient microbe—voracious enough to drive the whole biosphere to extinction—and a handful of amphibious humans called rifters who'd inadvertently released it from three billion years of solitary confinement. The resulting tsunami killed millions. It's not as through there was a choice: saving the world excuses almost any degree of collateral damage. Unless, of course, you miss the target. Now North America's west coast lies in ruins. Millions of refugees rally around a mythical figure mysteriously risen from the deep sea. A world already wobbling towards collapse barely notices the spread of one more blight along its shores. And buried in the seething fast-forward jungle that use to be called Internet, something vast and inhuman reaches out to a woman with empty white eyes and machinery in her chest. A woman driven by rage, and incubating Armageddon. Her name is Lenie Clarke. She's a rifter. She's not nearly as dead as everyone thinks. And the whole damn world is collateral damage as far as she's concerned. . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

The galactic stampede threatens the stability of neighboring planets and space stations, as widespread strife and sabotage and all-around pandemonium result in a desperate need for Starfleet assistance. Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise are dispatched to deal with the escalating crisis…which lies on the other side of a famously perilous region of space known as the Antares Maelstrom.

Book excerpt: Like reading Poe on nitrous oxide. Have you ever wanted to escape? Ever wished you were a character in a story? Be careful what you wish for. I wanted that once, too. And now here I am. And it sucks. How did I get here? What did I do to deserve this? Trapped in the nightmarish world of Edgar Allan Poe Sort of. Why are these tales so much worse than the originals? Why is everyone I meet so annoying? And what’s the deal with their wonky eyeballs? E is for Eyeball is what happens when you put works of public domain into the hands of an incompetent lunatic. Download or read book Disciple of a Dark God written by Edmund Glasby and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assassin, cultist, zealot; his sole aim in life is to serve the evil god who enabled him to exact his revenge. Satiated by this act, but forever bitter and cynical, Everus does whatever is required by the cult, and more importantly by Xethorn, who contacts him directly. As far as Everus is aware, he has already killed those responsible for his downfall and asks only to repay his deity. To this end, and with assistance from a grave- robbing thief with his own agenda, he seeks the wards which will allow Xethorn to gain supremacy over the world. Arrogant, charismatic and cold-hearted, Everus begins to realise that even his cynical view of people is not dark enough, as he eventually discovers the true extent to which he has been manipulated. Driven by the desire for vengeance, Everus stalks through his treacherous, unsavoury but sometimes blackly comical world in pursuit of the means to free his imprisoned god. Disciple of a Dark God is a dark fantasy novel that does not pit good against evil, love does not triumph and loyalty is not rewarded.

Download or read book The Lost Feather written by Erjan J. Slavin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lost Feather" is a tome of transitions, and of what happens in transit between the plateaus of definitive expressions that took place elsewhere. Underneath the painting of the bluebird that left its traces of blue in the sky beneath the artist's hand is the painting of what culminated in that moment of certain artistry. The underpainting adds a context for the sure strokes of the finished art, and the back-ends of a process reveal the makings of the meaning that is final as a gesture. In between the moment of the bird's passing, and the recognition of the color in the air, a feather that is lost in that transitory beauty is found in these pages--something which the polished work could not have given by its very nature as an edition of a work of literature that is said to be complete.

Download or read book Translations an autoethnography written by Paul Carter and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translations is a personal history written at the intersection of colonial anthropology, creative practice and migrant ethnography. Renowned postcolonial scholar, public artist and radio maker, UK-born Paul Carter documents and discusses a prodigiously varied and original trajectory of writing, sound installation and public space dramaturgy produced in Australia to present the phenomenon of contemporary migration in an entirely new light. Migrant space-time, Carter argues, is not linear, but turbulent, vortical and opportunistic. Before-and-after narratives fail to capture the work of self-becoming and serve merely to perpetuate colonialist fantasies. The ‘mirror state’ relationship between England and Australia, its structurally symmetrical histories of land theft and internal colonisation, repress the appearance of new subjects and subject relations. Reflecting on collaborations with Aboriginal artists, Carter argues for a new definition of the stranger-host relationship predicated on recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty. Carter calls the creative practice that breaks the cycle of repeated invasion ‘dirty art’. Translations is a passionately eloquent argument for reframing borders as crossing-places: framing less murderous exchange rates, symbolic literacy, creative courage and, above all, the emergence of a resilient migrant poetics will be essential.
Download or read book The Inquisitor written by Mark Allen Smith and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectacularly original thriller about a professional torturer who has a strict code, a mysterious past, and a dangerous conviction that he can save the life of an innocent child Geiger has a gift: he knows a lie the instant he hears it. And in his business—called "information retrieval" by its practitioners—that gift is invaluable, because truth is the hottest thing on the market. Geiger's clients count on him to extract the truth from even the most reluctant subjects. Unlike most of his competitors, Geiger rarely sheds blood, but he does use a variety of techniques—some physical, many psychological—to push his subjects to a point where pain takes a backseat to fear. Because only then will they finally stop lying. One of Geiger's rules is that he never works with children. So when his partner, former journalist Harry Boddicker, unwittingly brings in a client who demands that Geiger interrogate a twelve-year-old boy, Geiger responds instinctively. He rescues the boy from his captor, removes him to the safety of his New York City loft, and promises to protect him from further harm. But if Geiger and Harry cannot quickly discover why the client is so desperate to learn the boy's secret, they themselves will become the victims of an utterly ruthless adversary. Mesmerizing and heart-in-your-throat compelling, The Inquisitor is a completely unique thriller that introduces both an unforgettable protagonist and a major new talent in Mark Allen Smith.
Download or read book Cool Conduct written by Helmut Lethen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-03-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lethen brilliantly interprets New Objectivity as a tactical response to the need for a 'code of conduct' in an age of anxiety about values and normative judgments. Moving effortlessly between analysis of philosophical texts and literary works, he charts an increasingly popular field of cultural studies: how cultural discourses shape behavior. One of the most original and daring contributions to Weimar scholarship and to the study of modernity in general in a decade."—Anton Kaes, University of California, Berkeley "Lethen is probably the most original and outstanding scholar writing in German today about Weimar literature and culture. He traces the figure of the 'cold persona' as part of a broader discourse of anthropological, ethical, and aesthetic dimensions. The book is written in a personal voice, witty, lucid, and unpretentious."—Miriam Hansen, University of Chicago
