Book Great Reckonings in Little Rooms

Download or read book Great Reckonings in Little Rooms written by Bert O. States and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the theater phenomenon. It is an extension of notes on the theater and theatergoing that have been accumulating for some time. It does not have an argument, or set out to prove a thesis, and it will not be one of those useful books one reads for the fruits of its research. Rather, it is a form of critical description that is phenomenological in the sense that it focuses on the activity of theater making itself out of its essential materials: speech, sound, movement, scenery, text, etc. Like most phenomenological description, it will succeed to the extent that it awakens the reader's memory of his own perceptual encounters with theater. If the book fails in this it will be about as interesting to read as an anthology of someone else's dreams. In any case, this book is less concerned with the scientific purity of my perspective and method than with retrieving something from the theater experience that seems to me worthy of our critical admiration.

Book A Century of Advancing Mathematics

Download or read book A Century of Advancing Mathematics written by Paul Zorn and published by The Mathematical Association of America. This book was released on 2015-08-23 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MAA was founded in 1915 to serve as a home for The American Mathematical Monthly. The mission of the Association-to advance mathematics, especially at the collegiate level-has, however, always been larger than merely publishing world-class mathematical exposition. MAA members have explored more than just mathematics; we have, as this volume tries to make evident, investigated mathematical connections to pedagogy, history, the arts, technology, literature, every field of intellectual endeavor. Essays, all commissioned for this volume, include exposition by Bob Devaney, Robin Wilson, and Frank Morgan; history from Karen Parshall, Della Dumbaugh, and Bill Dunham; pedagogical discussion from Paul Zorn, Joe Gallian, and Michael Starbird, and cultural commentary from Bonnie Gold, Jon Borwein, and Steve Abbott. This volume contains 35 essays by all-star writers and expositors writing to celebrate an extraordinary century for mathematics-more mathematics has been created and published since 1915 than in all of previous recorded history. We've solved age-old mysteries, created entire new fields of study, and changed our conception of what mathematics is. Many of those stories are told in this volume as the contributors paint a portrait of the broad cultural sweep of mathematics during the MAA's first century. Mathematics is the most thrilling, the most human, area of intellectual inquiry; you will find in this volume compelling proof of that claim.

Book The Mother Other Unsavory Plays

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stanis_aw Ignacy Witkiewicz
  • Publisher : Hal Leonard Corporation
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9781557831392
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book The Mother Other Unsavory Plays written by Stanis_aw Ignacy Witkiewicz and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 1993 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited and translated by Daniel Gerould and C.S. Durer, foreword by Jan Kott. Painter, playwrights, novelist, aesthetician, philosopher, and expert on drugs, Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz - or Witkacy, as he called himself - remains Poland's outstanding figure in the arts between the two world wars. This volume brings together three of Witkiewicz's best works for the stage as well as a selection from his critical writing. The plays deal with the author's principal themes and obsessions: the dilemma of the artist in the twentieth century; the revolutions in science and politics; and the bankruptcy of all ideology, the decline of western civilization, and the coming of totalitarianism. Yet, far from being solemn or even serious in tone, these apocalyptic dramas are permeated with grotesque humor and characterized by a wild theatricality that particularly appeals to contemporary sensibility.

Book European Theatre 1960 1990 Routledge Revivals

Download or read book European Theatre 1960 1990 Routledge Revivals written by Ralph Yarrow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European theatre has been the site of enormous change and struggle since 1960. There have been radical shifts in the nature and understanding of performance, fuelled by increasing cross-cultural and international influence. Theatre has had to fight for its very existence, adapting its methods of operation to survive. European Theatre 1960-1990, first published in 1992, tells that story. The contributors - who in many cases have been theatre practitioners as well as critics - provide a wealth of fascinating information, covering Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Spain and Sweden, as well as Britain. The book offers an historical and descriptive overview of developments across national boundaries, enabling the reader to compare and contrast acting and directing styles, administrative strategies and the relationship between ideology and achievement. Chapters trace the evolution of theatre in all its aspects, including such elements as the end of censorship in many countries, the upsurge in political and personal awareness of the 1960s, shifting patterns of state artistic policy, and the effects on companies, directors, performers and audiences. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics of theatre studies.

Book Gombrowicz Polish Modernism and the Subversion of Form

Download or read book Gombrowicz Polish Modernism and the Subversion of Form written by Michael Goddard and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gombrowicz, Polish Modernism, and the Subversion of Form provides a new and comprehensive account of the writing and thought of the Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz. While Gombrowicz is probably the key Polish modernist writer, with a stature in his native Poland equivalent to that of Joyce or Beckett in the English language, he remains little known in English. As well as providing a commentary on his novels, plays, and short stories, this book sets Gombrowicz's writing in the context of contemporary cultural theory. The author performs a detailed examination of Gombrowicz's major literary and theatrical work, showing how his conception of form is highly resonant with contemporary, postmodern theories of identity. This book is the essential companion to one of Eastern Europe's most important literary figures whose work, banned by the Nazis and suppressed by Poland's Communist government, has only recently become well known in the West.

Book The Proof Stage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Abbott
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2023-07-11
  • ISBN : 0691206082
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book The Proof Stage written by Stephen Abbott and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The proof stage is the story of the unexpected collaborations and resonances between theater and mathematics and how they have evolved since the turn of the twentieth century. Toward the end of the 1800s, unsettling discoveries about alternate geometries and the mathematical infinite began to reveal that, despite its reputation for absolute certainty, mathematical truth is not immutable. At the same time, new, experimental forms of theater were rapidly developing-some inspired by these very upheavals in mathematics. Both disciplines were, and are, characterized by a quest for truth and a shared ability to investigate their respective limitations. Stephen Abbott provides the first systematic, book-length treatment of the interactions between mathematics and theater that have occurred over the last 120 years. Drawing on the author's fifteen years of experience researching and teaching a course on the subject, the book examines how the two disciplines reveal novel insights about one another. Stages of Uncertainty follows the path of playwrights that engaged mathematics such as Alfred Jarry, Stanislav Witkeiwicz, Samuel Beckett, Bertolt Brecht, Felix Durrenmatt, Tom Stoppard, Micheal Frayn, and Simon McBurney. Intertwined with this history is the history of mathematics; along the way, Abbott describes the development of quantum mechanics, chaos theory, incompleteness, and alternative geometries that occurred as these plays were being written. The main arguments are that these two domains have deep resonances, including shared notions of uncertainty, self-reference, recursion, and orientation, and that theater has engaged deeply and innovatively with math for many years. Abbott reveals a unique portrait of mathematics, one that is unexpected and deeply human"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cynical Society is a study of the political despair and abdication of (individual) responsibility Goldfarb calls cynicism—a central but unexamined aspect of contemporary American political and social life. Goldfarb reveals with vivid strokes how cynicism undermines our capacity to think about society's strengths and weaknesses. Drawing on thinkers from Alexis de Tocqueville to Allan Bloom and on such recent works as Beloved, Bonfire of the Vanities, and Mississippi Burning, The Cynical Society celebrates cultural pluralism's role in democracy.

Book Fantasies of Self Mourning

Download or read book Fantasies of Self Mourning written by Ruben Borg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fantasies of Self-Mourning Ruben Borg describes the formal features of a posthuman, cyborgian imaginary at work in modernism. The book’s central claim is that modernism invents the posthuman as a way to think through the contradictions of its historical moment. Borg develops a posthumanist critique of the concept of organic life based on comparative readings of Pirandello, Woolf, Beckett, and Flann O’Brien, alongside discussions of Alfred Hitchcock, Chris Marker, Béla Tarr, Ridley Scott and Mamoru Oshii. The argument draws together a cluster of modernist narratives that contemplate the separation of a cybernetic eye from a human body—or call for a tearing up of the body understood as a discrete organic unit capable of synthesizing desire and sense perception.
