When her eyes were half-closed under their heavy lids, and her mouth wore what the girls called its "John Bull" expression, not even Miss Beasley herself could drag information out of Aveline. The Sphinx, as she was sometimes nicknamed, prided herself on her accomplishment, and took particular care to maintain her character. Raymonde had apportioned the bed on her right to Aveline, and that on her left to Fauvette Robinson, who occupied about an equal place in her affections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angela Brazil's “The Madcap of the School” is a fantastic exploration of life at a traditional English girls' boarding school as shown through the eyes of one of its bright young attendants. Set to the backdrop of World War I, it follows the experiences of Raymonde and her friends during the formative years of their life. Highly recommended for young girls and those with an interest in early school girls' fiction. Angela Brazil (1868 – 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories". Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Contents include: “The Mystic Seven”, “The Limberlost”, “Raymonde Explores”, “Fifth-Form Tactics”, “A Midnight Scare”, “The Crystal Gazers”, “The Beano”, “A Week on the Land”, “The Campers”, “Canteen Assistants”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Madcap of the School The interior of the old Grange was quaint as its exterior. The large rooms lent themselves admit ably to school uses. The big hall, with its oak panelled walls, stained-glass windows, and huge fireplace, made an excellent lecture-room, or, when the forms were moved to one end, provided plenty of space for drilling or dancing. It seemed strange certainly to turn an Elizabethan bedroom into a twentieth-century classroom, and standard desks looked decidedly at variance with the carved chim ney-pieces or the stags' antlers that still orna mented the walls; but the modern element only seemed to enhance the old, and the girls agreed that nothing could be more suitable than to learn history in such a setting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angela Brazil (1868-1947) was the first of the British writers of "modern" School Girls' Stories genre - written from the characters' point of view. Along with her sister Amy, Angela then studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was quite late in taking up writing, developing a strong interest in Welsh mythology, and at first wrote a few magazine articles on mythology and nature. It was possibly thanks to her sister Amy that she finally began work on a novel at the age of 35. Exceptionally with respect to many of her contemporaries writing in this vein, Brazil did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships.

Book Popular Children s Literature in Britain

Download or read book Popular Children s Literature in Britain written by Julia Briggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing success of J.K. Rowling and other contemporary children's authors has demonstrated how passionately children can commit to the books they love. But this kind of devotion is not new. This timely volume takes up the challenge of assessing the complex interplay of forces that have created the popularity of children's books both today and in the past. The essays collected here ask about the meanings and values that have been ascribed to the term 'popular'. They consider whether popularity can be imposed, or if it must always emerge from children's preferences. And they investigate how the Harry Potter phenomenon fits into a repeated cycle of success and decline within the publishing industry. Whether examining eighteenth-century chapbooks, fairy tales, science schoolbooks, Victorian adventures, waif novels or school stories, these essays show how historical and publishing contexts are vital in determining which books will succeed and which will fail, which bestsellers will endure and which will fade quickly into obscurity. As they considering the fiction of Angela Brazil, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling, the contributors carefully analyse how authorial talent and cultural contexts combine, in often unpredictable ways, to generate - and sometimes even sustain - literary success.
