Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mad Monk of Russia, Iliodor: Life, Memoirs, and Confessions of Sergei Michailovich Trufanoff (Iliodor); Illustrated With Photographs Everything that I write in this book I have seen and heard myself. What I have seen and heard I could not write before my arrival in this great and free country, the United States; and even here until the last few months, owing to a combination of ih auspicious circumstances and political reasons, I have not been able to publish anything relating to the former Russian court and the causes which brought about the Russian Revolution. In consequence, my revelations in their complete form have never before seen the light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergei Michailovich Trufanov, also known as Hieromonk Iliodor, was born on October 19, 1880 in a small village near the Don River. Despite crushing poverty, which claimed several of his siblings, Trufanov was able to attend several years of school and then entered the local seminary. He went on to attend and graduate the St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1905. Shortly after, he gave several sermons that attacked a variety of people and organizations, including politicians, aristocrats, revolutionaries, Jews, nationalists, and more. Soon after he apparently blackmailed Rasputin. He later apologized for his slander of Jewish people, then renounced the Russian Orthodox Church, and ultimately was defrocked. After being banned from several monasteries, he fled to what is currently Norway. He continued to plot against Rasputin, starred as himself in a silent film, The Fall of the Romanovs in 1917, and then returned to Russia in 1918. A few years later, he moved to New York City and lived a relatively quiet life with his family while working as a janitor until his death on January 28, 1952. This story focuses on his earlier life, a time when one critic deemed him, "extravagantly psychopathic."

Marcus, now a Roman senator and loyal if lukewarm supporter of the powerful senatorial faction committed to world conquest, finds meaning in his military charity work and seeing his family grow and prosper. But to the east in the Roman provinces bordering the mighty Parthian empire, trouble is brewing. The aging emperor Trajan has set his sights on the strategically important kingdom of Armenia and has resolved that nothing is going to stop him from waging a campaign of conquest on a scale not seen since Caesar's Gallic wars. Meanwhile Fergus, Marcus's son and now head of security for Hadrian, the rising star and leader of the faction committed to retrenchment, becomes embroiled in a major conspiracy who's far reaching consequences will directly affect his family's security and prosperity. Summoned to the east and promoted to Prefect of the Seventh Numidian Auxiliary Cavalry Ala, Fergus must turn his soldiers into the finest fighting force in the eastern armies and win back the favour of his patron if he wants to save his family from impending catastrophe.
