Book Macroinvertebrate Communities and Habitat in Luxapalila Creek Mississippi and Alabama

Download or read book Macroinvertebrate Communities and Habitat in Luxapalila Creek Mississippi and Alabama written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of macroinvertebrates and their habitat was conducted in Luxapalila Creek soon after completion of flood control measures in the lower reach near Columbus, MS, 1998-2000. The results of this study were compared with a similar preconstruction survey conducted in 1987-1989. There was no evidence of adverse effects of construction on the benthic macroinvertebrate community. Recently channelized, unchannelized, and historically channelized portions of the stream differed somewhat in geomorphological (e.g., stream width) and other physical habitat characteristics (e.g., canopy coverage). However, at all sites macroinvertebrate community composition was marked by similarity, both fluictionally and structurally. Substrattmi and water quality conditions were also similar throughout the stream. Density of macroinvertebrates was greatest in the recently channelized downstream reach. Collector-filterers (mostly the Asian clarn, Corbiculafluminea) were least abundant in the upstream reach that was channelized 80 years ago. It is likely that these patterns reflect quantitative trophic difference along an upstream to downstream gradient usual for streams of this size. Short-lived, small invertebrates such as midges and worms (chironomids, oligochaetes, and nematodes) numerically dominated the fauna. Drift of the wonns and aquatic stages of midges, combined with aerial dispersal of adult midges, contributes to the rapid colonization ability and uniformity of community composition of the macroinvertebrate community that characterizes Luxapalila Creek.

Book Humans as Components of Ecosystems

Download or read book Humans as Components of Ecosystems written by Mark J. McDonnell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the importance to ecological studies of incorporating humans and their effects on ecosystems, leading experts from a variety of disciplines address a number of important issues, including: * the prominent role of humans in the function of ecosystems on Earth * why humans have been ignored in ecological studies * approaches taken by social scientists, historians, geographers, economists, and anthropologists in the study of human activities * the emergence of a new ecological paradigm accommodating human activities * methods for studying subtle human effects, and human- populated ecosystems * future research and training required to include humans effectively as components of ecological systems. Of interest to students and researchers in ecology, and to policy-makers and environmental managers. In addition, it makes social scientists aware of new opportunties for integrating their ideas with those of ecologists.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book Agroforestry for Commodity Production Ecological and Social Dimensions

Download or read book Agroforestry for Commodity Production Ecological and Social Dimensions written by Shibu Jose and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry systems have been touted as sustainable production systems that alleviate many of the environmental problems associated with modern production systems. Are they indeed ecologically and economically sustainable? Using case studies from around the globe, this book highlights the potential of agroforestry systems to produce a broad range of commodities. In addition to addressing the biophysical and socioeconomic dimensions of producing traditional food, fodder and fiber crops, this volume examines the potential to integrate biomass crops, botanicals and ornamental plants into agroforestry practices. The book should be particularly useful to students, professionals, researchers and policy makers involved in natural resource management, agroforestry, and environmental management.

Book Pacific Atlantic Mollusc Migration

Download or read book Pacific Atlantic Mollusc Migration written by Jón Eiríksson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sheds new light on the marine fauna and geological setting of the Tjörnes Sequence, North Iceland, which is a classic site for the Pliocene and Pleistocene stratigraphy of the North Atlantic region. Readers will discover descriptions of new data collected by the editors over a period of over three decades on marine faunal assemblages and sedimentology available for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, as well as the tectonic and stratigraphical relationships on Tjörnes Peninsula. The book includes a comprehensive account of all the collections of marine fossil invertebrate macrofossils and foraminifera known to the editors from the Tjörnes Sequence. It is expected to elucidate sedimentological and faunal changes from relatively stable Pliocene conditions to highly variable and periodically harsh climatic conditions of recurring Quaternary glaciations. The distribution, recent or fossil, of various species is recorded and pertinent ecological and biological features are also discussed. The Tjörnes Sequence records the Neogene migration of Pacific species into the North Atlantic. Researchers in geology, climate science, environmental science and earth science will find this book particularly valuable.
