Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in one volume: The complete historical romance saga—from the Scottish Highlands to the Court of Versailles—by an international-bestselling author. The Macdonald Romances collection brings together two Scottish tales of passion, intrigue, and love by Evelyn Anthony. Clandara: It’s unthinkable—but beautiful, headstrong Katharine Fraser has fallen in love with the eldest son of her father’s longtime enemy. Notorious nobleman James Macdonald of Dundrenan is ready to sacrifice all for the woman he loves. But the fated struggle to restore the prince to the throne results in a fiery call to arms across Scotland—and a tragedy that threatens to divide the star-crossed lovers. As James vows to fight against the invading British Army, Katharine must follow her own path, even as it leads her into the arms of another man, far from the heart of her true desires and her beloved home of Clandara. The French Bride: To settle his gambling debts and avoid being sent to the Bastille, Charles Macdonald is given an ultimatum: He must marry his cousin, the beautiful, innocent Anne de Bernard—who also happens to be the richest woman in France. However, the dissolute Charles wants only to return to the bed of his mistress, the Baroness Louise de Vitale. When Anne is brought to Versailles at the king’s command, the inexperienced bride is no match for Louise’s wiles. As two women fight for the love of one man, a deadly intrigue will unfold that could destroy one life as it transforms another. Set against a rich historical canvas—from eighteenth-century Scotland to the French Courts—and peopled by such real-life figures as Bonnie Prince Charlie, King Louis XV, Madame du Barry, and future queen Marie Antoinette, the Macdonald Romances are prize-winning Anthony at her spellbinding best.

" Naebody ever thoucht o' layin' 't to yer chairge, mem." " 'Deed, I aye had eneuch adu to du the thing I had to du, no to say the thing 'at naebody wad du but mysel'. I hae had nae leisur' for feelin's an' that," insisted Miss Horn. But here a heavy step descending the stair just outside the room attracted her attention, and checking the flow of her speech perforce, with three ungainly strides she reached the landing. "Watty Witherspail! Watty!" she called after the footsteps down the stair. " Yes, mem," answered a gruff voice from below. " Watty, whan ye fess the bit boxie, jist pit a hemmer an' a puckle nails i' your pooch to men' the hen-hoose-door. The tane maun be atten't till as weel's the tither." "The bit boxie" was the coffin of her third cousin Griselda Campbell, whose body lay on the room on her left hand as she called down the stair. Into that on her right Miss Horn now re-entered, to rejoin Mrs Mellis, the wife of the principal draper in the town, who had called ostensibly to condole with her, but really to see the corpse. " Aih! she was taen yoong!" sighed the visitor, with long-drawn tones and a shake of the head, implying that therein lay ground of complaint, at which poor mortals dared but hint. "No that yoong," returned Miss Horn. "She was upo' the edge o' aucht an' thirty." " Weel, she had a sair time o' V No that sair, sae far as I see-an' wha sud ken better? She's had a bien doon-sittin' (sheltered quarters), and sud hae had as lang's I was to the fore. Na, na; it was nowther sae young nor yet sae sair." " Aih ! but she was a patient cratur wi' a' flesh," persisted Mrs Mellis, as if she would not willingly be foiled in the attempt to extort for the dead some syllable of acknowledgment from the lips of her late companion...... George MacDonald (10 December 1824 - 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle.C. S. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master" "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence." Elizabeth Yates wrote of Sir Gibbie, "It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling." Even Mark Twain, who initially disliked MacDonald, became friends with him, and there is some evidence that Twain was influenced by MacDonald.Christian author Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) wrote in Christian Disciplines, vol. 1, (pub. 1934) that "it is a striking indication of the trend and shallowness of the modern reading public that George MacDonald's books have been so neglected." In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works on Christian apologetics including several that defended his view of Christian Universalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rough, wild glen it was, to which, far back in times unknown to its annals, the family had given its name, taking in return no small portion of its history, and a good deal of the character of its individuals. It lay in the debatable land between highlands and lowlands; most of its inhabitants spoke both Scotch and Gaelic; and there was often to be found in them a notable mingling of the chief characteristics of the widely differing Celt and Teuton. The country produced more barley than wheat, more oats than barley, more heather than oats, more boulders than trees, and more snow than anything. It was a solitary, thinly peopled region, mostly of bare hills, and partially cultivated glens, each with its small stream, on the banks of which grew here and there a silver birch, a mountain ash, or an alder tree, but with nothing capable of giving much shade or shelter, save cliffy banks and big stones.

Book excerpt: This is an incredible love story about Malcolm, Scottish fisherman who is enchanted by a strong-willed, daring girl whom he dares not to love until he learns a shocking secret about her. Malcolm is not scared of those who hold a higher social position in the culture of captivity, nor does he think himself above the poorest citizen. He is untouched by the small-town pettiness because he prospers under the care of his old grandfather. This historical romance is a well-written tale packed with mystery, fantasy, moralizing, and wonderfully depicted characters, set in the Victorian era. The story gives us a picture of passion and integrity that is exceptional; it takes frequent turns and carries the reader, with Malcolm, through misfortune and joy. The author used imagination as a literary medium for examining the human condition.

His father, a farmer, was one of the MacDonalds of Glen Coe, and a direct descendant of one of the families that suffered in the massacre of 1692.The Doric dialect of the Aberdeenshire area appears in the dialogue of some of his non-fantasy novels.MacDonald grew up in the Congregational Church, with an atmosphere of Calvinism. But MacDonald never felt comfortable with some aspects of Calvinist doctrine; indeed, legend has it that when the doctrine of predestination was first explained to him, he burst into tears (although assured that he was one of the elect). Later novels, such as Robert Falconer and Lilith, show a distaste for the idea that God's electing love is limited to some and denied to others. MacDonald graduated from the University of Aberdeen, and then went to London, studying at Highbury College for the Congregational ministry.......

Its golden rays straggled into the aisles of the wood as into some noble hall. I was impressed as if some ancient and altogether admirable and shining family had settled there in that part of the land called Concord, unknown to me,-to whom the sun was servant,-who had not gone into society in the village,-who had not been called on. I saw their park, their pleasure-ground, beyond through the wood, in Spaulding's cranberry-meadow. The pines furnished them with gables as they grew. Their house was not obvious to vision; their trees grew through it. I do not know whether I heard the sounds of a suppressed hilarity or not. They seemed to recline on the sunbeams. They have sons and daughters. They are quite well. The farmer's cart-path, which leads directly through their hall, does not in the least put them out,-as the muddy bottom of a pool is sometimes seen through the reflected skies. They never heard of Spaulding, and do not know that he is their neighbor,-notwithstanding I heard him whistle as he drove his team through the house. Nothing can equal the serenity of their lives.
