Book Let s Speak Hawaiian E Kama ilio Hawai i Kakou

Download or read book Let s Speak Hawaiian E Kama ilio Hawai i Kakou written by Dorothy M. Kahananui and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's Speak Hawaiian is a comprehensive Hawaiian language course intended for use at the secondary school and college levels. In this second edition the text continues to answer the need for new methods and materials in language instruction and presents extensive research on the Hawaiian language. It is composed almost entirely of material that has been tested in classroom situations; it employs the aural-oral method and emphasizes the development of conversational skills through dialogues and drills. Hawaiian and English texts are on separate pages to aid in rendering the student's first language inoperative. These methods, together with memorization and drill, will help the student more readily to achieve fluency in Hawaiian, unhampered by English. The text includes directed responses, questions and answers, short narratives, pattern practice, conversations, and material for practice in tenses, sentence expansion, and comparative forms. This new edition also offers more comprehensive illustrations and explanations of word usage and syntax, based on the most recent and most authoritative Hawaiian language definitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert and Mary Rowe’s second child, Christopher, was born with severe neurological and visual impairments. For many years, the Rowes’ courageous response to adversity set an example for other parents of children with birth defects. Then the pressures on Bob Rowe—personal and professional—took their toll, and he fell into depression and, ultimately, delusion. And one day he took a baseball bat and killed his wife and three children. Julie Salamon deftly avoids sensationalism as she tells the Rowes’ tragic story with intelligence, sympathy, and insight. Like all great literary journalism, Facing the Wind asks us to join its issues and examine our own lives and problems in the new, bright light that good writing always sheds.

Book excerpt: Walk down Mamane Street, the heart of Honokaa Town, and step back into the late 19th and early 20th century. Honokaa’s single-wall, wooden plantation-era buildings are as much a symbol of Hawaii to local people as Diamond Head is to tourists. The commercial buildings have their emblematic false fronts and totan (corrugated iron) cladding. They contained, and still contain, mom-and-pop businesses that were founded upon personal relationships, required the labor of whole families, and provided for the education of the next generation. The small size of the town encouraged cross-pollination of peoples. Sugar workers, paniolos (cowboys), coffee farmers, and homesteaders all came to Honokaa.

Book excerpt: This work establishes the means to identify the nearly 130 species of Hawaiian carabid beetles of the tribe Platynini, which constitutes a monophyletic radiation. The native Hawaiian platynines represent almost half of the carabid fauna, and this volume is the first of three intended books that will taxonomically treat all of the native and introduced carabid species found in the Hawaiian Islands. In addition to presenting identification keys, diagnostic characters, habitus photos, and distribution maps for Hawaiian Platynini, an introductory section details the history of carabid beetle study in Hawaii and provides a key to the tribes of native and introduced Hawaiian Carabidae.

Book Who Owns the Crown Lands of Hawai i

Download or read book Who Owns the Crown Lands of Hawai i written by Jon M. Van Dyke and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1846-1848 Mahele (division) transformed the lands of Hawai‘i from a shared value into private property, but left many issues unresolved. Kauikeaouli (Kamehameha III) agreed to the Mahele, which divided all land among the mō‘ī (king), the ali‘i (chiefs), and the maka‘āinana (commoners), in the hopes of keeping the lands in Hawaiian hands even if a foreign power claimed sovereignty over the Islands. The king’s share was further divided into Government and Crown Lands, the latter managed personally by the ruler until a court decision in 1864 and a statute passed in 1865 declared that they could no longer be bought or sold by the mō‘ī and should be maintained intact for future monarchs. After the illegal overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, Government and Crown Lands were joined together, and after annexation in 1898 they were managed as a public trust by the United States. At statehood in 1959, all but 373,720 acres of Government and Crown Lands were transferred to the State of Hawai‘i. The legal status of Crown Lands remains controversial and misunderstood to this day. In this engrossing work, Jon Van Dyke describes and analyzes in detail the complex cultural and legal history of Hawai‘i’s Crown Lands. He argues that these lands must be examined as a separate entity and their unique status recognized. Government Lands were created to provide for the needs of the general population; Crown Lands were part of the personal domain of Kamehameha III and evolved into a resource designed to support the mō‘ī, who in turn supported the Native Hawaiian people. The question of who owns Hawai‘i’s Crown Lands today is of singular importance for Native Hawaiians in their quest for recognition and sovereignty, and this volume will become a primary resource on a fundamental issue underlying Native Hawaiian birthrights. 64 illus., 6 maps
