Book excerpt: Madhyamikologists, the author essays in this work the task of demonstrating with a wealth of documentation that it is difficult to resist the conclusion that, far from being an absolutism or Absolutistic Monism as commonly heald in responsible circles today, Madhyamika philosophy, styled Sunyavada, is as heald by the classics, Universal, Total, or Absolute Nihilism/Illusionism, indeed so Aabsolute a Nihilism/Illusionism that it leaves absolutely no room for religion and mysticism to which the Madhyamikas do in their a-philosophical mood feel committed, a fact brought into focus by the author for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An explanation of the nature and functions of the mind * What is the mind and how does it work? * Which types of mind lead to inner peace and happiness, and which do not? * How can an understanding of our mind be applied to our daily life? Understanding the Mind provides a practical explanation of the mind in a unique combination of profound philosophical exploration and practical psychology. Part One explains how Buddhist psychology is based on an understanding of the mind as a formless continuum that is related to, yet separate from, the physical body. Though understanding the nature of the mind and the process of cognition we can attain a lasting state of inner peace and happiness that is independent of external circumstances. Part Two explains the many types of mind and shows how we can abandon those that harm us, while increasing those that lead to personal joy and fulfilment. Throughout the book Geshe Kelsang skilfully shows how we can apply our understanding of our mind to improve our daily life.

Book Wonhyo s Philosophy of Mind

Download or read book Wonhyo s Philosophy of Mind written by A. Charles Muller and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading East Asian Buddhist thinkers of the seventh century compared, analyzed, and finalized seminal epistemological and soteriological issues that had been under discussion in India and East Asia for centuries. Among the many doctrinal issues that came to the fore was the relationship between the Tathagatagarbha (or “Buddha-nature”) understanding of the human psyche and the view of basic karmic indeterminacy articulated by the new stream of Indian Yogacara introduced through the translations and writings of Xuanzang and his disciples. The great Silla scholiast Wonhyo (617–686), although geographically located on the periphery in the Korean peninsula, was very much at the center of the intense discussion and debate that occurred on these topics. Through the force of his writings, he became one of the most influential figures in resolving doctrinal discrepancies for East Asian Buddhism. Although many of Wonhyo’s writings are lost, through his extant work we are able to get a solid glimpse of his profound and learned insights on the nature and function of the human mind. We can also clearly see his hermeneutical approaches and methods of argumentation, which are derived from apophatic Madhyamika analysis, the newly introduced Buddhist logic, as well as various indigenous East Asian approaches. This volume includes four of Wonhyo’s works that are especially revelatory of his treatment of the complex flow of ideas in his generation: System of the Two Hindrances (Yijang ui), Treatise on the Ten Ways of Resolving Controversies (Simmun hwajaeng non), Commentary on the Discrimination between the Middle and the Extremes (Chungbyon punbyollon so), and the Critical Discussion on Inference (P’an piryang non).

Book Picturing Mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Danvers
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2006-01-01
  • ISBN : 9401202109
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Picturing Mind written by John Danvers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author takes an unusual multi-disciplinary approach to debates about contemporary art and poetry, ideas about the mind and its representations, and theories of knowledge and being. Arts practices are considered as enactments of mind and as transformative modes of consciousness. Ideas drawn from poetics, philosophy and consciousness studies are used to illuminate the conceptual and aesthetic frameworks of a diverse array of visual artists. Themes explored include: the interconnectedness of existence; art as a way of interrogating appearances; identity and otherness; art and the self as ‘open work’; Buddhist concepts of ‘emptiness’ and ‘suchness’; scepticism, mysticism and the arts; and mind in the landscape. The book contains an important and distinctive visual dimension with photographs and drawings by the author and texts employing unorthodox syntax and layouts that exemplify the themes under discussion. The author hints at a new aesthetics and philosophy of indeterminacy, paradox, uncertainty and discontinuity - a contrarium - in which we negotiate our way through the instabilities and contradictions of contemporary life. Written in a lively and accessible style this volume is of interest to scholars, arts practitioners, teachers and to anyone with an interest in art, poetry, consciousness studies, philosophy and nature. Artists, poets and philosophers discussed, include: Cy Twombly, Helen Chadwick, John Ruskin, Ad Reinhardt, Richard Long, James Turrell, Anish Kapoor, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Agnes Martin, Land Art, Arte Povera, Minimalism, Charles Olson, Kenneth White, Robin Blaser, Fred Wah, Gary Snyder, RS Thomas, Alice Oswald, John Cage, Jorge Luis Borges, Guy Davenport, Kenneth Rexroth, Heidegger, Marjorie Perloff, Thomas McEvilley, Merleau-Ponty, Spinoza, Wittgenstein, Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, David Abram, Thomas Merton, Pyrrho & Nagarjuna.

Book Language Mind and Reality

Download or read book Language Mind and Reality written by Ranjan Kumar Panda and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book delve into the central theme of R.C. Pradhan's philosophy in particular and the issues in analytic philosophy in general. In analytic tradition, Professor Pradhan's research has been extensively in the area of Wittgenstein's philosophy: philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. While philosophizing the notion of language and mind, Pradhan explores the complexities of the web of life. For him, language neatly binds several aspects of life: the cultural, moral, religious, and scientific. The mind, however, represents the inner world of human experience that involves multiple dimensions of consciousness: the bodily, the vital, the mental, and the spiritual consciousness. Considering the broad spectrum of Pradhan's works, the contributions in this book reflect mainly on the issues concerning the nature of metaphysics, mind, meaning, truth, and values. Language, Mind and Reality, in this regard, is a study on the contemporary trends in analytic philosophy.

Book Madhyamaka and Yogacara

Download or read book Madhyamaka and Yogacara written by Jay L. Garfield and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madhyamaka and Yogacara are the two principal schools of Mahayana Buddhist philosophy. While Madhyamaka asserts the ultimate emptiness and conventional reality of all phenomena, Yogacara is usually considered to be idealistic. This collection of essays addresses the degree to which these philosophical approaches are consistent or complementary. Indian and Tibetan doxographies often take these two schools to be philosophical rivals. They are grounded in distinct bodies of sutra literature and adopt what appear to be very different positions regarding the analysis of emptiness and the status of mind. Madhyamaka-Yogacara polemics abound in Indian Buddhist literature, and Tibetan doxographies regard them as distinct systems. Nonetheless, scholars have tried to synthesize the two positions for centuries. This volume offers new essays by prominent experts on both these traditions, who address the question of the degree to which these philosophical approaches should be seen as rivals or as allies. In answering the question of whether Madhyamaka and Yogacara can be considered compatible, contributors engage with a broad range of canonical literature, and relate the texts to contemporary philosophical problems.

Book The Emptiness of Emptiness

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. W. Huntington
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 1995-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780824817121

Download or read book The Emptiness of Emptiness written by C. W. Huntington and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emptiness of Emptiness presents the first English translation of the complete text of the Madhyamakāvatāra (Entry into the Middle Way) a sixth century Sanskrit Buddhist composition that was widely studied in Tibet and, presumably, in its native India as well. In his lengthy introduction to the translation, Huntington offers a judiciously crafted, highly original discussion of the central philosophy of Mahāyāna Buddhism. He lays out the principal ideas of emptiness and dependent origination not as abstract philosophical concepts, but rather as powerful tools for restructuring the nature of human experience at the most fundamental level. Drawing on a variety of Indian and Western sources, both ancient and modern, Huntington gradually leads the reader toward an understanding of how it is that sophisticated philosophical thinking can serve as a means for breaking down attachment to any idea, opinion or belief. All of this on the Buddhist premise that habitual, unreflective identification with ideas, opinions, or beliefs compromises our appreciation of the ungraspable miracle that lies at the heart of everyday, conventional reality. The author shows how the spiritual path of the bodhisattva works to transform the individual personality from a knot of clinging into a vehicle for the expression of profound wisdom (prajñā) and unconditional love (karuṇā).

Book A Profound Mind

  • ISBN : 0385514689
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book A Profound Mind written by Dalai Lama and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time for general readers, the Dalai Lama presents a comprehensive overview of the most important teaching of Buddhism. Perhaps the main difference between Buddhism and other religions is its understanding of our core identity. The existence of the soul or self, which is central in different ways to Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, is actually denied in Buddhism. Even further, belief in a “self” is seen as the main source of our difficulties in life. Yet a true understanding of this teaching does not lead one to a despairing, cynical worldview with a sense that life has no meaning—Far from it, a genuine understanding leads to authentic happiness for an individual and the greatest source of compassion for others. In 2003 and in 2007, the Dalai Lama was invited to New York to give a series of talks on the essential Buddhist view of selflessness. This new book, the result of those talks, is now offered to help broaden awareness of this essential doctrine and its usefulness in living a more meaningful and happy life. While the Dalai Lama offers a full presentation of his teachings on these key philosophical points for contemplation, he also shows readers how to bring these teachings actively into their own lives with recommendations for a personal practice. It is only by actually living these teachings that we allow them to bring about a genuine transformation in our perception of ourselves and our lives A Profound Mind offers important wisdom for those committed to bringing about change in the world through developing their own spiritual capabilities, whether they are Buddhists or not.

Book Have This Mind

  • Author : James E. Royster
  • Publisher : Balboa Press
  • Release : 2014-04-18
  • ISBN : 1452572755

Download or read book Have This Mind written by James E. Royster and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have This Mind uses a rational, logical, and systematic approach to spirituality, religion, and God by focusing on the mind or consciousness rather than doctrine, ritual, etc. It provides a model that resolves the many seemingly conflicting views of religion and God. The four largest religions of the world, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, are introduced in terms of their transformative dimensions that lead to an inclusive and eminently happy life. These principles and practices are illustrated with biographies of exemplary saints and sages from the traditions. Have This Mind outlines three different ways of being religious-regardless of one’s particular religious tradition-based on a progressively maturing mind. Of particular import to Christian readers are interpretations of biblical and theological views that facilitate transition from a traditional and mythic outlook tending toward exclusivism to one that is rational, transrational, and inclusive. On the basis of an appreciative and inclusive view of the world’s great religions, one discovers how these religions can actually enhance one’s own spirituality and religious outlook. A perspective central to Have This Mind is that authentic religion and spirituality lie in the loving quality of one’s life and not simply the ideas or beliefs held in one’s mind
