Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lyrical Drama, Vol. 2: Essays on Subjects, Composers,& Executants of Modern Opera The subject of Azda, which is tragic in the extreme, and which but for the bright and often splendid musical sur roundings given to it by Signor Verdi would be gloomy, is said to have been suggested by the Khedive himself. To the musician who first made his mark by an opera on the subject of Nebuchadnezzar, a, drama of which the scene is laid at Memphis and at Thebes, of which the action takes place in the time of the Pharaohs, and which numbers among its chief personages a triumphant King of Egypt, a captive King of Ethiopia, with an indefinite number of mysterious priests and priestesses, gorgeously attired soldiers and many coloured slaves, could scarcely fail to prove attractive and the composer of the so-called Nabuco seems to have revelled in the pageant music, dance music, religious choruses and mili tary hymns which together make up a very consider able portion of his Egyptian work. Aida is as full of show and glitter as l'africaine, and some of the themes presented in the characteristically Egyptian scenes are alleged to be of Egyptian origin. Indeed, one would not be surprised to hear that the really curious subject of the chorus in praise of the immense Phtah had, like the subject of the libretto, been furnished by the Khe dive himself. Book The Poems of Shelley Volume Two

Download or read book The Poems of Shelley Volume Two written by Kelvin Everest and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major Romantic poets, and wrote what is critically recognised as some of the finest lyric poetry in the English language. This is the second volume of the five-volume The Poems of Shelley, which presents all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. This volume makes extensive use of the Shelley manuscripts in the Bodleian Library and draws on the substantial recent research which has appeared on Shelley's text and contexts, and on members of his circle such as Mary Shelley, Byron, Godwin and others. It offers significant new datings and contextual exposition of major works including Prometheus Unbound, Laon and Cythna, 'Julian and Maddalo', The Cenci, and Shelley's translations from the Greek, notably his highly original translation of Euripides' The Cyclops. There are also comprehensive treatments of some of Shelley's best known shorter poems, such as 'Lines written among the Euganean Hills' and 'Ozymandias'. The annotation demonstrates the extraordinary range and richness of Shelley's literary intelligence, and situates his work in the revolutionary politics and social upheavals of the early nineteenth century. The text and annotation are supported by an extensive bibliography, a chronology, indexes, and appendices which include a detailed examination of the history of the Cenci story. The volumes of The Poems of Shelley form the most comprehensive edition of Shelley's poetry available to students and scholars.

Book The Russian Image of Goethe Volume 2

Download or read book The Russian Image of Goethe Volume 2 written by Andre von Gronicka and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of The Russian Image of Goethe constitute the only study in a Western language on Goethe's reception in Russia. Volume II is a seamless continuation of the earlier book, covering the second half of the nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth. Von Gronicka examines the attitudes toward Goethe and his work of, among others, Turgenev, Dostoevski, Tolstoi, and the Russian symbolists. He draws on the Russian writers' diaries, letters, and essays, quoting from them extensively in faithful translation or felicitous paraphrase. In developing The Russian image of Goethe, von Gronicka traces the course of Russian literature in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and provides not only a clear idea of how Russian writers viewed Goethe, but an excellent introduction to that literature. Both volumes of The Russian Image of Goethe are of interest to scholars of Russian, German, and comparative literature.
