Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lyrical Drama, Vol. 1: Essays on Subjects, Composers,& Executants of Modern Opera The first Opera on a profane or rather on a secular subject-for it is surely a mistake to regard everything not sacred as necessarily profane - was the descent of Orpheus into the infernal regions - drawn thither, as is well known, by his wife Eurydice. The subject of Orpheus, alike lyrical and dramatic, has been a favourite one with composers for the last four cen turies, from Poliziano, who produced his Orfeo at Rome in 1480, up to Gluck, nearly three centuries later, and from Gluck down to Offenbach, who de lights a good many persons in the present day. The Orfeo which was brought out just four centuries ago, at Rome, bore no more resemblance in a musical point of view to a modern Opera than did the sacred musical plays before spoken of and up to the year 1600 we meet with no musical work which bears more. Book Kierkegaard s Journals and Notebooks Volume 1

Download or read book Kierkegaard s Journals and Notebooks Volume 1 written by Søren Kierkegaard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I would like to write a novel in which the main character would be a man who got a pair of glasses, one lens of which reduced images as powerfully as an oxyhydrogen microscope, and the other of which magnified on the same scale, so that he perceived everything relatively. ? A flight of fancy by an aspiring science fiction writer? While it may sound as such, this wistful musing is one of the little-discussed personal reflections of nineteenth-century philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, whose remarkable journals and notebooks, unpublished during his lifetime, are presented here. The first of an eleven-volume series produced by Copenhagen's Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre, this volume is the first English translation and commentary of Kierkegaard's journals based on up-to-date scholarship. It offers new insight into Kierkegaard's inner life. In addition to early drafts of his published works, the journals contain his thoughts on current events and philosophical and theological matters, notes on books he was reading, miscellaneous jottings, and ideas for future literary projects. Kierkegaard wrote his journals in a two-column format, one for his initial entries and the second for the marginal comments he added later. The new edition of the journals reproduces this format and contains photographs of original manuscript pages, as well as extensive scholarly commentary. Translated by leading experts on Kierkegaard, Journals and Notebooks will become the benchmark for all future Kierkegaard scholarship.

Book The Poems of Shelley Volume Five

Download or read book The Poems of Shelley Volume Five written by Carlene Adamson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was one of the major poets of the English Romantic period. This is the fifth volume of a six-volume edition of The Poems of Shelley, which aims to present all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between late summer 1821 and late January 1822. They include Hellas, a lyrical drama written in support of the Greek War of Independence, composed in September–November 1821 and published in February–March 1822, his unfinished tragedy Charles the First which he had been planning for several years, as well as important shorter poems such as ‘The Indian Girl’s Song’, ‘Autumn: a Dirge’ and his ‘Epitaph’ for John Keats. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies to the poems, a chronological table of Shelley’s life and publications, and indexes to titles and first lines. Now completed, this is the most comprehensive edition of Shelley’s poetry available to students and scholars.

Book Coleridge and Shelley

Download or read book Coleridge and Shelley written by Sally West and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally West's timely study is the first book-length exploration of Coleridge's influence on Shelley's poetic development. Beginning with a discussion of Shelley's views on Coleridge as a man and as a poet, West argues that there is a direct correlation between Shelley's desire for political and social transformation and the way in which he appropriates the language, imagery, and forms of Coleridge, often transforming their original meaning through subtle readjustments of context and emphasis. While she situates her work in relation to recent concepts of literary influence, West is focused less on the psychology of the poets than on the poetry itself. She explores how elements such as the development of imagery and the choice of poetic form, often learnt from earlier poets, are intimately related to poetic purpose. Thus on one level, her book explores how the second-generation Romantic poets reacted to the beliefs and ideals of the first, while on another it addresses the larger question of how poets become poets, by returning the work of one writer to the literary context from which it developed. Her book is essential reading for specialists in the Romantic period and for scholars interested in theories of poetic influence.
