Book King Lear at the Lyceum

Download or read book King Lear at the Lyceum written by Henry Irving and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Lear at the Lyceum: Produced November 10, 1892; Some Extracts From the Press on the Performance of Mr. Henry Irving and Miss. Ellen Terry Veteran actor, who has for some years a retired from the practice of his profession, is understood to have said that hereafter "King Lear" will always be played as Henry Irving plays it. The great speeches of Lear as delivered with electrical power and majesty by the older actors are entitled to live in memory, and no one need be ashamed of having been greatly stirred by them. The foolish enjoyment of a wild and arbitrary plot, and the permissible and not discreditable enjoyment of the sonorous and impassioned and majestic delivery of the great speeches of the part, are distinctly lost enjoyments as soon as the new Irving tradition comes into vogue. More than once I have said in writing on Irving that the most distinctive symptom or mark of his special genius is that he often plays a scene - so to speak - more in reference to other scenes than in reference to itself. This is very rare. Not only is it not always found in the most effective acting, but it is often the very antithesis, or seems so, of effective acting. The practical rule, though unformulated, of effective acting is to make the most of each scene. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Henry Irving Actor and Manager

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving, Actor and Manager: A Critical Study The future biographer of Mr. Henry Irving will probably have to close with the autumn of 1883 one period of his hero's career. The third period it may be called, if we reckon Mr. Irving's earliest efforts in the Provinces and in London as the first, and the Bateman management at the Lyceum as the second. This third period, then, comprises the five years of Mr. Irving's own management. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Henry Irving s

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving's: Impressions of America, Vol. 1 of 2: Narrated in a Series of Sketches, Chronicles, and Conversations The interest taken by you in our American experiences has been made manifest to us in many ways on this side of the Atlantic. We have received the "God speed" of friends and associates, and a record of our trip will, I believe, be interesting to many. My own share in this book is but small; and to my friend, Joseph Hatton, belongs whatever credit there may be in it. It will, I hope, be accepted only for what it professes to be, - a series of sketches, chronicles, and conversations regarding a tour which the American people made for us, by their welcome and by their bounteous hospitality, a delightful progress. In our intercourse with our friends, old and new, throughout the United States, nothing has impressed us more than their fondness for the old country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving: A Record of Twenty Years at the Lyceum One attraction in the life of an actor who has fought his way, and triumphed over many difficulties, in his struggles to eminence, is found in the spirit of adventure which so often marks his course. Such a story must be always gratifying and encouraging to read; and we follow it now with sympathy, now with admiration. Nor is it without gratification for the actor himself, who must look back with complacency to troubles surmounted, and habits of patience and discipline acquired. In this severe and trying school he may acquire the practical virtues of resignation, courage, perseverance, and the art of confronting difficulties; he will cultivate restraint in the midst of apparent success. Even at the present moment, when the stage is presumed to be more flourishing than at any former period, the element of precariousness is more present than ever. Everything seems a lottery - theatres, pieces, actors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Henry Irving Classic Reprint

Download or read book Henry Irving Classic Reprint written by Austin Brereton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving The first chapter of this book was revised by Sir Henry Irving a few months before his death. It formed part of an authoritative biography which, had Sir Henry Irving lived until his projected, formal farewell of the stage next autumn, would have been published then. I have thought it well to let this chapter stand exactly as it left his hands, as it represents just what he wished to be printed during his life-time. In the future, however, I purpose amplifying this sketch of the early life of the great actor. The other chief articles in this volume were written within a few hours of Sir Henry's death: Personal Recollections, for The Daily Telegraph; Some Reminiscences, for The Standard; and Henry Irving: the Actor, for The Illustrated London News. Henry Irving on Tour appeared in The Sphere, by a curious coincidence, on the day of his death; and that on Irving and Westminster Abbey in the same paper of the following week. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving's Impressions of America: Narrated in a Series of Sketches, Chronicles, and Conversations This book is the outcome of a desire to chronicle, in a lasting form, some of the events of a tour which your kindness has made a delight to Ellen Terry and myself. Before leaving London I ventured upon a prophecy that in journeying to America we were going amongst friends. That prophecy has been fulfilled. In the history of the stage the Lyceum Company is the first complete organization which (has crossed the Atlantic with the entire equipment of a theatre.
