Book excerpt: Consciousness is a stream. With the right combination of psychic ability and science, anyone can navigate it. London Riley is the reluctant daughter of an in-home fortune teller. Gable Matthews is a gifted young scientist, driven by a family tragedy. When the two stumble on an explosive discovery as teenagers, their lives are upended and they are forced apart. A decade later, their accidental invention reunites them in a mysterious Arizona commune, aimed at one mission: making it possible for anyone to time travel. Harnessing the power and fluidity of consciousness they navigate time through their memories. Often at odds, London and Gable explore the boundless capability of the human mind in search of a better life. Just as they begin to find peace in the present, their world is turned upside down again and they are thrust into an alternate timeline. One where only London can decide whether they deserve their original life, or if anyone, even a time traveler, has the right to the life she wants. Intimate and thrilling, The Luxury of Time Travel examines the power of our choices even in the face of infinite options.

Gili shows us different perspectives of home: color, happiness, sex, depression, arrogance, creativity, simplicity, boredom. These images in this stunning volume are a diairy of the interiors and situations that have, over the last thirty years, strung Gili's curiosity and fantasy the most. Simple, still and understated, Gili's images of interiors all have possibility as their subtext. Illustrated

Download or read book Schoolishness written by Susan D. Blum and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Schoolishness, Susan D. Blum continues her journey as an anthropologist and educator. The author defines "schoolishness" as educational practices that emphasize packaged "learning," unimaginative teaching, uniformity, constant evaluation by others, arbitrary forms, predetermined time, and artificial boundaries, resulting in personal and educational alienation, dependence, and dread. Drawing on critical, progressive, and feminist pedagogy in conversation with the anthropology of learning, and building on the insights of her two previous books Blum proposes less-schoolish ways of learning in ten dimensions, to lessen the mismatch between learning in school and learning in the wild. She asks, if learning is our human "superpower," why is it so difficult to accomplish in school? In every chapter Blum compares the fake learning of schoolishness with successful examples of authentic learning, including in her own courses, which she scrutinizes critically. Schoolishness is not a pedagogical how-to book, but a theory-based phenomenology of institutional education. It has moral, psychological, and educational arguments against schoolishness that, as Blum notes, "rhymes with foolishness."

Download or read book Calder The Conquest of Time written by Jed Perl and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of America's greatest twentieth-century sculptor, Alexander Calder: an authoritative and revelatory achievement, based on a wealth of letters and papers never before available, and written by one of our most renowned art critics. Alexander Calder is one of the most beloved and widely admired artists of the twentieth century. Anybody who has ever set foot in a museum knows him as the inventor of the mobile, America's unique contribution to modern art. But only now, forty years after the artist's death, is the full story of his life being told in this biography, which is based on unprecedented access to Calder's letters and papers as well as scores of interviews. Jed Perl shows us why Calder was--and remains--a barrier breaker, an avant-garde artist with mass appeal. This beautifully written, deeply researched book opens with Calder's wonderfully peripatetic upbringing in Philadelphia, California, and New York. Born in 1898 into a family of artists--his father was a well-known sculptor, his mother a painter and a pioneering feminist--Calder went on as an adult to forge important friendships with a who's who of twentieth-century artists, including Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Georges Braque, and Piet Mondrian. We move through Calder's early years studying engineering to his first artistic triumphs in Paris in the late 1920s, and to his emergence as a leader in the international abstract avant-garde. His marriage in 1931 to the free-spirited Louisa James--she was a great-niece of Henry James--is a richly romantic story, related here with a wealth of detail and nuance. Calder's life takes on a transatlantic richness, from New York's Greenwich Village in the Roaring Twenties, to the Left Bank of Paris during the Depression, and then back to the United States, where the Calders bought a run-down old farmhouse in western Connecticut. New light is shed on Calder's lifelong interest in dance, theater, and performance, ranging from the Cirque Calder, the theatrical event that became his calling card in bohemian Paris to collaborations with the choreographer Martha Graham and the composer Virgil Thomson. More than 350 illustrations in color and black-and-white--including little-known works and many archival photographs that have never before been seen--further enrich the story.
Download or read book Kindergarten written by Julie Diamond and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed by renowned educator Deborah Meier as "a rare and special pleasure to read," Kindergarten explores a year in the life of a kindergarten classroom through the eyes of the gifted veteran teacher and author Julie Diamond. In this lyrical, beautifully written first-person account, Diamond explains the logic behind the routines and rituals children need to thrive. As she guides us through all aspects of classroom life--the organization, curriculum, and relationships that create a unique class environment--we begin to understand what kindergarten can and should be: a culture that builds children's desire to understand the world and lays the foundation for lifelong learning. Kindergarten makes a compelling case for an expansive definition of teaching and learning, one that supports academic achievement without sacrificing students' curiosity, creativity, or development of social values. Diamond's celebration of the possibilities of classroom life is a welcome antidote to today's test-driven climate. Written for parents and teachers alike, Kindergarten offers a rare glimpse into what's really going on behind the apparent chaos of a busy kindergarten classroom, sharing much-needed insights into how our children can have the best possible early school experiences.
