Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lutheran Manual on Scriptural Principles: Or, the Augsburg Confession Illustrated and Sustained, Chiefly by Scripture Proofs and Extracts From Standard Lutheran Theologians of Europe and America; Together With the Formula of Government and Discipline, Adopted by the General Synod of the Evangelic Christian Brethren, In submitting the following Manual to your friendly consideration, and that of the Christian public at large, it seems proper to say a few words in elucidation of the principles on which it is constructed. Our holy religion addresses us as reasonable beings capable of investigating the evidences of truth, and commands us to be ever ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us. But whither shall we go to find those evidences, to learn what Christianity and the Christian church are? In this emergency different voices reach us. "Go to the church" say the Romanist and Puseyite. But where is the church? To which of the several associations professing to be the church, and often the only true church, shall we go? They are all interested parties, and whether we repair to Jerusalem or Mount Gerezim, to Rome, to Wittenberg, or to Geneva; the response is ever the same, "The temple of the Lord are we." Yet how different their religions; and all cannot be true! "Go to the lively oracles of God," say others, and among them the Son of God himself. "Search the Scriptures," says he, "for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." The gospel was before the church. The revealed truths of Christianity were the means, by the preaching of which sinners were converted, and the church was formed. They are the divine instructions according to which the church in all ages must be organized and administered. Book Principles of Lutheran Theology

Download or read book Principles of Lutheran Theology written by Carl E. Braaten and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, Principles of Lutheran Theology has guided students into theological reflection on the landmarks of Christian faith as understood in the Lutheran confessional heritage for a generation. The book sets forth the main principles of classical Lutheran theology but with an eschatological accent. Canon, confession, ecumenicity, Christ-centeredness, sacrament, law/ gospel, and two kingdoms are all examined not only in terms of their original meaning and historical development but also in light of current reflections. In this new edition, Braaten takes stock of the research and reflection of the last twenty-five years and also adds a chapter on the distinctive, Archimedean Lutheran insight into the hiddenness of God as a fount or ground of all theologizing. This new edition, cross-referenced to key readings in Luther's Works and The Book of Concord, will both equip and facilitate the search for a contemporary articulation of Christian identity in light of the church's historic commitments.

Book excerpt: The ELCA Division for Congregational Ministries and Augsburg Fortress Publishers are proud to continue their work on Renewing Worship, the multi-year program to develop basic Lutheran worship materials for the new century. Since 1978, the Lutheran Book of Worship has been the primary English language worship resource for many Lutherans throughout the world. In a process that includes numerous expert consultations, congregational feedback, and input from all branches of the church, Renewing Worship will provide the means to develop worship materials that reflect the diversity, vitality, and growth of the Lutheran Church today. Each year several volumes of provisional Renewing Worship material will appear, presenting to the church at large worship ideas for use and evaluation. A feedback form will be included in every volume, so input can be easily provided. Additionally, the program's website (www.renewingworship.org) will continue to provide background, overview, evaluation forms, and sample content for all available material, throughout the process. Based upon The Use of the Means of Grace, this volume will provide foundational principles in the areas of language, music, preaching, and worship space, for study and response throughout the church.
