Book Ho for the Black Hills

Download or read book Ho for the Black Hills written by Jack Crawford and published by SDSHS Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1875, a young man from Pennsylvania known as Captain Jack joined the Dodge Expedition into the Black Hills of Dakota Territory, penning letters to the Omaha Daily Bee during that time and for six months in 1876. John Wallace Crawford, aka Captain Jack, wrote a vibrant account of this fascinating time in the American West. His correspondence featured unusual and intriguing details about the relative merits of the gulches, the vagaries and difficulties of travel in the region, the art of survival in what was essentially wilderness, the hardships of inclement weather, trouble with outlaws, and interactions with American Indians. Award-winning historian Paul L. Hedren has compiled these almost unknown letters, writing an introduction and essays, which result in a treasure trove of hitherto hidden primary documents as well as a ripping yarn in the traditions of the old West. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. Book Black Hills Passion Play

Download or read book Black Hills Passion Play written by Johanna Meier and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1932, Josef Meier, a native of Luenen, Germany, brought a small company of actors to the United States to tour with a passion play. It was performed in German, destined for a limited engagement in German theaters, churches, and German-speaking communities. Political and economic conditions in Germany were already deteriorating during this time, and Meier determined to remain in America, to found a permanent home for the play. He translated the play into English, hiring American actors to replace the German-speaking cast. As he booked tours across the United States, Meier continued to seek a suitable permanent outdoor location for his production, mentioning his quest to the public in interviews across the nation. En route to the West Coast, Meier presented the Passion Play in Sioux Falls, the only town of size within South Dakota at that time. A group of businessmen from the Black Hills attended and asked Meier to examine possible sites in their area. He chose a spectacular natural location in Spearfish, and in 1939, an amphitheater was constructed and became the home of the renamed Black Hills Passion Play of America.

Book The WPA Guide to South Dakota

Download or read book The WPA Guide to South Dakota written by and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 2006 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression, the federal government put thousands of unemployed writers to work in the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Out of their efforts came the American Guide series, the first comprehensive guidebooks to the people, resources, and traditions of each state in the union. The WPA Guide to South Dakota is a candid, detailed, and lively introduction to the state and its people. Much has changed since the book's first publication in 1938, when the authors noted, "South Dakota has been, and still is, a pioneer state." But the book vividly recaptures the era when no driver's licenses were required, when liquor could not be sold on election days until after 5:00 PM, when Pierre's recreational groups included polo riders and skeet shooters, when the Morrell packing plant at Sioux Falls offered free tours on weekdays. This unique guide has much more than nostalgia to offer today's readers. Twenty-eight auto tours and nine city tours tell the stories of the state's people and places and offer a fascinating alternative to freeway travel. Essays on major themes such as native peoples, history, architecture, transportation, and recreation provide an authentic self-portrait of 1930s South Dakota in humorous, loving, and literary prose. A new introduction by historian John E. Miller shares the story behind the American Guide series and celebrates those distinctly South Dakotan qualities preserved in this decades-old volume-qualities that hold true today. This time-traveler's guide to South Dakota is an evocative reminder of the state's history and a challenge to contemporary readers who seek to find how that past lives on in the present day.
