It builds on the current literature and oral history to methodologically reaffirm kinships and establish ethnic lineages. Most contemporary Luo narratives come from Kenya and Uganda, in addition to those written by Western anthropologists and missionaries. None of these narratives have changed the content of the oral stories told by Luo groups and subgroups in Africa, especially those related to their lineages, ethnic affiliations, and their path of immigration from South Sudan to Tanzania, but have, instead, confirmed the history, stories, and mythology of the greater Luo groups in Africa. This book will serve to evoke intellectual curiosity among African social scientists, prompting them to conduct more research to further understanding of Luo ethnic groups’ ways of life and social interactions, as well as their contributions to the sociopolitical and economic development in the countries and regions they inhabit.

Worked with the South Sudan Investment Authority as Director of Investor service; Acting Director-General with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment (GOSS); served as Chief Administrator for Lafon Area in 2010 and became the first commissioner for Lafon county in 2016. Ukal is the author of Pӓri Alphabet Book, and The Pari Storybook; He is married and has children. Book excerpt: The Luo are a unique being. Its history is akin to the Israelites and the Old testament, complete with miracles like those of Nengo Jamwa, the heroes like Lwanda Magere whose power was in his shadow, and Gor Mahia, among others. The Luo migration is traceable to Egypt, with some of the Pharaos believed to have had a luo origin. Later, the history is documented clearer from Sudan, from where they migrate to the rest of Eastern (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), Central Africa (DRC and Togo) and Western Africa (Ghana and Nigeria). They found the Babito Dynasty, replacing the then unique only dynasty in Bunyoro Kitara. Mpunga Rukidi's twin brother later founds Baganda kingdom. The Luo are a culturally strong Nilotic people wo whom a home means a home and nothing less. Even though some of them have long left the right of passage of removal of six lower teeth, it still has a lot of cultural relevance. Other cultural practises described in this book include wife inheritance, choice of leadership, among others. It is a unique nation which has produced some of the most eloquesnt and einfluential leaders such as Barrack Obama and Raila Odinga, both from Kenya. other leaders of Luo Origin are the late Garang and Milton Obote. History has it that Ruoth of Alego ascended to the kingship throne after cheating hie elder brother, ogelo at a shaving ceremony marking the end of the mandatory 3 / 4 days of mourning of one of their parents. When Ogelo was already seated ready to be shaved as the eldest son, he was called by the women who seemingly were squabbling over something. As a responsible elder, Ogelo obliged. Unknown to him, his younger brother had a secret plan to dethrown him from the mantle of leadership. On coming back, Ogelo found Ruoth already being shaved. This got him angry, and he left in a huff, even migrating to south Nyanza. However, it is said that Ogelo, like the case of Cain and Abel, was promised that whereas Ruoth had taken the home mantle from him, his position as the eldest son was secure, for he would have bigger positions than those ever to be taken by Ruoth. It is this that the presidency of Barrack Obama as the president of the United states, notably the strongest country on earth, was foretold. That Obama became president is therefore not a surprise to the Luo. Yet this is just one of the miracles foretold by the foreseers; there are many more promises yet to be fulfilled up the sleeves of the Luo . So to the world, . Watch this space.

And yet, the wide variations in levels of violence within and between countries show that it is not inevitable; rather, it is the result of choices made at individual, community and societal levels. This book examines the potential of peace infrastructures as vehicles to strengthen and spread progress towards cultures of peace. Peace infrastructures vary hugely in sophistication and level. The examples examined in this book range from tiny structures which help resolve conflicts between individuals and within community organisations, peace committees which serve local communities, peace education and peace club programmes in schools, mediation mechanisms to prevent election violence and to ministries of peace to coordinate government and non-government efforts in peacemaking and peacebuilding. The overall finding is that the development of peace infrastructures at all levels has great potential to build cultures of peace. 1. It is the only book available which documents the experience and potential of nonviolence in post-independence sub-Saharan Africa. 2.
