Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Register of Ludlow Ludlow Castle is so intimately mixed up in the Middle Ages with the history of England, that it is only possible to allude very briefly to a few of the great events connected with it. With one exception (richard every King of England from Stephen (1135) down to Henry VII. (1509) is believed to have visited Ludlow Castle, and generally his visit was connected with events of great national import. Edward IV. Spent most of his boyhood in the Castle, while Edward V. Was proclaimed King of England within its walls. It was to Ludlow Castle that Prince Arthur (the eldest son of Henry VII.) brought Catharine of Aragon as a happy bride, and it was there also that the young Prince died a few months afterwards. In this Castle Princess Mary (afterwards Queen Mary) spent the winters of 1525 and 1526, in royal Splendour but perhaps the halcyon days of Ludlow Castle were those when Sir Henry Sidney presided over its destinies in Queen Elizabeth's reign until his death there in 1586. In the Civil Wars of the Commonwealth Ludlow was the last Shropshire Castle to hold out for the King, and was even then only surrendered at the express order of its Sovereign. It was ordered by the Parliament to be Slighted, but on the restoration its former grandeur was restored at a cost of nearly no small sum in those days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ludlow and Ludlow Castle: Including Plan of Town and Plan of Castle When the Doomsday Survey was made in 1085, no reference to either Ludlow or Ludlow Castle was included in the record, nor was any mention made Of Dinham or Dinan, an earlier name by which town and Castle were known. This omission should not be taken as conclusive evidence that a castle or town did not exist prior to this date, but it may be accepted as satisfactory witness to the absence of a castle, Church and habitation at that date, more especially when taken in conjunction with the consideration that other places, for example Bromfield, in the immediate vicinity, are mentioned and noted. It must, however, be borne in mind that in this part of England the Danes had made continual raids up the Severn and into the valley Of the Teme, destroying and burning, pillaging and looting towns and villages, whether they Offered resistence or not, and Doomsday describes whole districts as being waste and deserted which had been formerly inhabited and cultivated.
