Book The Lucy Memorial Freed Slaves Home

Download or read book The Lucy Memorial Freed Slaves Home written by Virginia A. Salamone and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fieldwork has been combined with archival research conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Nigeria to explicate the manner in which the Sudan United Mission strove to create a Christian Northern Nigerian identity in order to combat a Muslim Hausa identity. To accomplish this transformation, the missionaries created a home for freed Nigerian slaves; it was named after Lucy Guinness Kumm, one of its founders. The story of the home and its use takes place in the midst of Lord Lugard's colonial ideal of indirect rule and the working misunderstanding in which local rulers presumably conducted local affairs in an independent manner free from direction from the colonial government. The reality was much different and each of the participants chose to 'misunderstand' the actions, motives, and histories of the others. These included indigenous Muslim rulers, so-called 'pagans, ' colonial officials, and missionaries. In the midst of numerous intrigues, the Sudan United Mission took care of over 200 freed slave children and initiated significant educational reforms. The depiction of a plural society and its expatriates is a major contribution. The book has value for studies in education, colonial history, and cultural anthropology

Book The Sister Fidelma Mysteries

Download or read book The Sister Fidelma Mysteries written by Edward J. Rielly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of new essays on Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma novels, which feature Sister Fidelma's attempts to solve a wide range of crimes, often murders that occur under especially mysterious conditions. The novels, set mainly in 7th century Ireland, also include a great deal of history, which is not surprising given that the author is actually Peter Berresford Ellis, a noted Celtic historian. Some of the essays analyze aspects of the novels, focusing especially on the protagonist and her partner in detection and, ultimately, husband, Brother Eadulf. Other essays place Fidelma and the novels within the tradition of detective fiction. Still others explore the historical, intellectual, spiritual and geographical contexts for her labors. Also included are accounts of the author's career, the International Sister Fidelma Society, and the biennial Sister Fidelma conferences held in Cashel, Ireland.

Book Understanding Religious Change in Africa and Europe Crossing Latitudes

Download or read book Understanding Religious Change in Africa and Europe Crossing Latitudes written by Nathan Irmiya Elawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and compares the religious experience of an African group with a European one. It offers an ethnographical investigation of the Jukun of north central Nigeria. The author also organically weaves into the narrative the Christianization of the Irish in a comparative fashion. Throughout, he makes the case for an African Christianity connected to a Celtic Irish Christianity and vice-versa -- as different threads in a tapestry. This work is a product of a synthesis of archival research in three continents, interviews with surviving first-generation Christians who were active practitioners of the Jukun indigenous religion, and with former missionaries to the Jukun. On the Irish side, it draws from extant primary sources and interviews with scholars in Celtic Irish studies. In addition, pictures, diagrams, and excerpts from British colonial and missionary journals provide a rich contextual understanding of Jukun religious life and practices. The author is among the emerging voices in the study of World Christianity who advocate for the reality of "poly-centres" for Christianity. This perspective recognizes voices from the Global South in the expansion of Christianity. This book serves as a valuable resource for historians, anthropologists, theologians, and those interested in missions studies, both scholars and lay readers seeking to deepen their understanding of World Christianity.
