Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Massive, beautiful . . . unquestionably some of the best writing on Spain [and] the best that Mr. Michener has ever done on any subject.”—The Wall Street Journal Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer.

Book Spanish Dramatists of the Golden Age

Download or read book Spanish Dramatists of the Golden Age written by Mary Parker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-09-17 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age of Spanish drama extends from the close of the 15th century to the death of Calderón in 1681. During that time, the humanists, as dramatists, followed Italy's artistic awakening direction, and imitated Classical drama. With originality and dreams of greatness, they subverted the nature of tragedy; modified the approach of Comedy and invented the New Play, the Comedia Nueva. In it the poet-dramatists introduced important modificaitons of realism, included imagined reality, Christian symbolism and theatricality, as artistic truth. They elaborate all kinds of syntheses. For this reason, the Spanish Golden Age theater can be viewed as part of a tradition that includes the Greco-Roman comedy and tragedy, Christian tragedy, and the authentic national literary and dramatic tendencies. The entries in this reference book explore the fascinating history of the Golden Age of Spanish drama. The volume begins with an introductory overview of the literary, cultural, and historical contexts that shaped dramatic writing of the period. The book then presents alphabetically arranged essays for nineteen significant Spanish dramatists of the Golden Age. Each essay is written by an expert contributor and includes biographical information, an analysis and evaluation of major works, a discussion of critical response to the plays, and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The volume closes with a selected general bibliography of central critical studies of Golden Age Spanish drama.

  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book P O Box Love written by Paola Calvetti and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charming epistolary novel that chronicles the love story between Emma and Frederico, former high school sweethearts who meet again thirty years later. At Dreams & Desires, 50-year-old Emma's quaint bookshop in Milan dedicated to romantic fiction, the passionate bookseller serves coffee and tea to her customers and completes order slips in pen rather than using a computer. One day, she finds a mysterious handwritten note stuck between the pages of a novel. The message is from her high school sweetheart Frederico, who is now a successful architect in New York and whom she hasn't seen in thirty years. When she finally meets Frederico again, Emma is convinced that her life is about to turn into a romance novel - an intercontinental fairy tale between Milan and New York, between two post office boxes and two lovers that are separated by the Atlantic Ocean and half a life. But Frederico is married, and their epistolary romance, punctuated by once-a-year sojourns on the island of Belle Ile, seems to have no future. Paola Calvetti's PO Box Love is an ode to old-fashioned relationships (the ones that last a lifetime), old-fashioned habits (such as writing letters by hand in fountain pen) and old-fashioned notions (such as politeness, and the great lost art of conversation), and will enchant readers of such perennial favorites as 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and Same Time Next Year by Bernard Slade.

Book My Life Planned and Unplanned

Download or read book My Life Planned and Unplanned written by W. G. Wedan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-01-31 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Life Planned and Unplanned is the book title, but it is the unplanned part of my life that I could not have imagined during my youth in Galesburg, Illinois. As the son of Swedish immigrants and from a large family, I couldnt envisage much of a future. They were the Depression years. Those families that had positions with the CB&Q or the Santa Fe railroads seemed not to be affected. Those in construction, especially of houses, were, and drastically! Construction had come to an abrupt halt. Home builders, like my father, had to be content with the occasional small repair jobs. The help of my older brother Lewis and my sisters Ellyn, Dodney, and Carole were a great aid to my parents. I sold magazines door-to-door and later had newspaper routes, along with my brother Carl. After finishing high school, together with a friend, I earned my tuition for a year of business college doing maintenance work of that school. After a year of working experience, I joined my two brothers in the military service in World War II. We had been attacked as a nation, and everyone seemed to accept the war and sacrifices to bring it to a successful conclusion.
