Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love Poems of John Donne But Donne never made poetry his profession, and for the greater part of his life he was far more scholar and preacher than poet. His nature was extraordinarily complex. Heaven and Earth contended in it with a force that made his life a succession of alternating exaltation and depres sion, loftiness and baseness, rapture and despair. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of John Donne John Donne's Poems were originally undertaken for The Muses Library by Dr. Brinsley Nicholson. They were handed over to me shortly after his death in 1891. I have had the advantage of the material which Dr. Nicholson had brought together; but for the book as it stands, with the exception of the Introduction which Mr. Saintsbury has kindly contributed, I am alone responsible. The bulk of the text is based upon the principal seventeenth-century editions, those of 1633, 1635, 1650 and 1669. No one of these is of supreme authority, and therefore I have had no choice but to be eclectic. But at the same time I have endeavoured to give all variants, other than obvious misprints, in the footnotes. Here and there one or other of the innumerable Ms. copies has been of service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of John Donne, Vol. 1: Edited From the Old Editions and Numerous Manuscripts; With Introductions Commentary; The Text of the Poems With Appendixes A short examination of the manuscripts convinced me that it would be very unsafe to base a text on any single extant manuscript, or even to make an eclectic use of a few of them, taking, now from one, now from another, what seemed a probable emendation. On the other hand it became clear that if as wide a collation as possible of extant manuscripts were made one would be able to establish in many cases what was, whether right or wrong, the traditional reading before any printed edition appeared. Book The Poems of John Donne Vol 1

Download or read book The Poems of John Donne Vol 1 written by James Russell Lowell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of John Donne, Vol. 1: From the d104 of the Edition of 1633 Donne's Poems were, from an early period of his life, among Mr. Lowell's favorite books. In 1855 an edition of them was included, I believe at his instance, in the series of "British Poets" then in course of publication by Little, Brown & Company, in Boston. It was, apparently, a reprint, without material change, from one of the later English editions, and, like all previous editions, it stood greatly in need of editorial revision. Few of Donne's poems were printed during his lifetime. In the first collection of them, which appeared in 1633, two years after his death, they were jumbled together in no intelligible order, and with no regard to the dates of their composition, while the text shows that indifference to correct punctuation and to uniformity of spelling which was characteristic of much of the writing and presswork of those days. No poems require more care in printing, for the thought is often intricate, the diction often involved, so that for understanding them every help is needed that can be given by the press. Even with such help many passages remain difficult, and some seem corrupt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Poems of John Donne Vol 2 written by Herbert J. C. Grierson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of John Donne, Vol. 2: Edited From the Old Editions and Numerous Manuscripts With Introductions Commentary It is as to the relation of this 'wit' to, and its effect on, his poetry that they have been at variance. To his contemporaries the 'wit' was identical with the poetry. Donne's 'wit' gave him the same supremacy among poets that learning and humour and art gave to Jonson among dramatists. To certain of his Dutch admirers the wit of The Flea seemed superhuman, and the epitaph with which Carew closes his Elegy expresses the almost universal English opinion of the seventeenth century: Here lies a king that ruled as he thought fit The universal monarchy of wit; Here lies two flamens, and both those the best, Apollo's first, at last the true God's priest. It may be doubted if Milton shared this opinion. He never mentions Donne, but it was probably of him or his imitators he was thinking when in his verses at Cambridge he spoke of those new-fangled toys and trimmings slight Which take our late fantastics with delight. Certainly the growing taste for 'correctness' led after the Restoration to a discrimination between Donne's wit and his poetry. 'The greatest wit, ' Dryden calls him, 'though not the greatest poet of our nation.' What he wanted as a poet were just the two essentials of 'classical' poetry - smoothness, of verse and dignity of expression. This point of view is stated with clearness and piquancy in the sentences of outrageous flattery which Dryden addressed to the Earl of Dorset in the opening paragraphs of his delightful Essay on Satire: 'There is more of salt in all your verses, than I have seen in any of the moderns, or even of the ancients; but you have been sparing of the gall, by which means you have pleased all readers, and offended none. Donne alone, of all our countrymen, had your talent; but was not happy enough to arrive at your versification; and were he translated into numbers, and English, he would yet be wanting in the dignity of expression. Book The Poetical Works of Dr John Donne

Download or read book The Poetical Works of Dr John Donne written by John Donne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Dr. John Donne: With a Memoir Spirit of poetry, than with that of religion: so it is not only the noise of drums and trumpets, which have drowned the Muses' harmony, or the fear that the church's ruin will destroy the priests likewise, that now frights them from this country, where they have been so ingeniously received; but these rude pretenders to excellences they unjustly own, who profanely rushing into Miner va's temple, with noisome airs blast the laurel, which thunder cannot hurt. In this sad condition, these learned sisters are fled over to beg your lordship's protection, who have been so certain a patron both to arts and arms, and who, in this general confusion, have so entirely preserved your honor, that in your lordship we may still read a most perfect character of what England was in all her pomp and greatness. So that although these poems were formerly written, upon several occasions, to several persons, they now unite themselves, and are become one pyramid to set your lordship's statue upon where you may stand, like armed Apollo, the defender of the Muses, encouraging the poets now alive to celebrate your great acts, by affording your countenance to his poems, that wanted only so noble a subject. My Lord, Your most humble servant, john donne.* The eldest son of the poet, and editor of several of his father's works. Book The Complete English Poems

Download or read book The Complete English Poems written by John Donne and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-06-24 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No poet has been more wilfully contradictory than John Donne, whose works forge unforgettable connections between extremes of passion and mental energy. From satire to tender elegy, from sacred devotion to lust, he conveys an astonishing range of emotions and poetic moods. Constant in his work, however, is an intensity of feeling and expression and complexity of argument that is as evident in religious meditations such as 'Good Friday 1613. Riding Westward' as it is in secular love poems such as 'The Sun Rising' or 'The Flea'. 'The intricacy and subtlety of his imagination are the length and depth of the furrow made by his passion,' wrote Yeats, pinpointing the unique genius of a poet who combined ardour and intellect in equal measure.

Book excerpt: Born in 1572 in London England, John Donne was an English Jacobean poet of exceptional skill, whose poetry was known for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor. While Donne was well educated and his poetic talents considerable he struggled for much of his life to provide for his family. Having published only two volumes during his lifetime, he was not a professional poet. Despite this his legacy on the world of poetry is a significant one. In this volume you will find a representative selection of his "love-poetry", a type of poetry popular in Donne's time.
