Book excerpt: This dramatic and absorbing play tells the story of the courtesan Izayoi and the priest Seishin; classic lovers who are doomed to suffer the tragic consequences of their passion. As a representative example of Japanese play writing of the 19th century The Love of Izayoi and Seishin is a superlative example of the turbulence and dramatic incident that are the major conventions of Kabuki. The intricate plot involves murder, attempted suicide, hari-kiri, theft, and the usual stunning Kabuki denouement. This specific feature is one of the intriguing aspects of Kabuki drama, and continually keeps the stage alive with action and violence. Complete with stage directions and complementary instructions, this play can be read with pleasure for its own sake, or as a gripping Kabuki narrative for all enthusiasts of the theater.

Book Japanese and Western Literature

Download or read book Japanese and Western Literature written by Armando Martins Janeira and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese and Western Literature delves deeply into Japanese culture to discover the concepts that similarize and differentiate Japanese and Western literary creations. Paralleling Japanese literary creations and fundamental thought with those of the West, the author draws many illuminating comparisons: for example, between the novels of Murasaki Shikibu and Marcel Proust, between the Portuguese poet Torga and the haiku master Issa, and between the picaresque novel in Japan and in the West. Contrastive studies are also made into such concepts as time, nature, love, and tragedy. This broad yet incisive survey of Japanese literarily genres and themes is more than a comparative study of literature, however; it is an attempt to grasp the core of Japanese culture by setting it against world culture. From this born a complex of new ideas and problems, and author is able to probe the extent of Western influence on Japanese fiction, poetry, and essays in the past hundred years.

Download or read book World Within Walls written by Donald Keene and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokugawa family held the shogunate from 1603 to 1867, ruling Japan and keeping the island nation isolated from the rest of the world for more than 250 years. Donald Keene looks within the "walls" of isolation and meticulously chronicles the period's vast literary output, providing both lay readers and scholars with the definitive history of premodern Japanese literature. World Within Walls spans the age in which Japanese literature began to reach a popular audience--as opposed to the elite aristocratic readers to whom it had previously been confined. Keene comprehensively treats each of the new, popular genres that arose, including haiku, Kabuki, and the witty, urbane prose of the newly ascendant merchant class.

Book Danj r s Girls

Download or read book Danj r s Girls written by L. Edelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-02-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danjuro ' s Girls is a fascinating history of Japan's female kabuki troupes, offering a penetrating investigation into three generations of kabuki actresses associated with the renowned Ichikawa Danjuro acting dynasty. Contextually grounding early female precedents in kabuki, the book focuses on the Ichikawa Girls' Kabuki Troupe, a unique and trailblazing company founded after Japan's defeat in World War II. The troupe became a national sensation in the 1950s, briefly becoming part of the otherwise impenetrable all-male kabuki establishment. Drawing on numerous interviews, as well as written and visual primary sources, Danjuro ' s Girls challenges readers to re-examine conventional notions about gender, performance, and traditional Japanese theatre.

Book The Structure of Detachment

Download or read book The Structure of Detachment written by Hiroshi Nara and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1930, when Japan was struggling to define and assert its national and cultural identity, The Structure of Iki (Iki no kôzô) re-introduced the Japanese to a sophisticated tradition of urbane and spirited stylishness (iki) that was forged in the Edo period. Upon his return from Europe, Kuki Shûzô (1888–1941) made use of the new theoretical frameworks based on Western Continental methodology to redefine the significance of iki in Japanese society and culture. By applying Heidegger’s hermeneutics to this cultural phenomenon, he attempted to recast traditional understanding in the context of Western aesthetic theory and reestablish the centrality of a purely Japanese sense of "taste." The three critical essays that accompany this new translation of The Structure of Iki look at various aspects of Kuki, his work, and the historical context that influenced his thinking. Hiroshi Nara first traces Kuki’s interest in a philosophy of life through his exposure to Husserl, Heidegger, and Bergson. In the second essay, J. Thomas Rimer compels readers to reexamine The Structure of Iki as a work in the celebrated tradition of zuihitsu (stream-of-consciousness writings) and takes into account French literary influences on Kuki. The philosopher’s controversial link with Heidegger is explored by Jon Mark Mikkelsen in the final essay.
