Book Portraits of South Louisiana

Download or read book Portraits of South Louisiana written by and published by University of Louisiana. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the "Introduction": I first stood on Louisiana soil in Lafayette during May of 1982. There, I found myself standing at the crossroads of another culture. Shortly after, I heard about a Clifton Chenier gig scheduled for the next day at the Grant Street Dancehall. Clifton was very ill and could not perform that night, so Rockin' Dopsie filled in. That evening someone gave me Ambrose Thibodeaux's name and address written on a paper napkin. This is how it went every trip I took"€"acquiring names of musicians scribbled on little pieces of paper or cardboard beer coasters. . . . . This is my story"€"how I discovered Cajun music and its musicians. Several times I went back; time and again I was surprised by the cultural endurance of this relatively small group of people. Both old and young keep their history alive through a simple bond"€"the culture, the language, and the songs of their ancestors. . . . This is not a historical document about these people and their music, and it is far from complete when it comes to even musicians. These images instead record my journey into a culture that continually captivates me.

Book excerpt: An essential overview of Jafa's sweeping, dynamic and disquieting video portraits of Black American life Though he has worked in film and music for decades, American video artist Arthur Jafa only garnered acclaim in the art world in 2016 for his video work Love is the Message, the Message is Death. Composed of found images and videos, his oeuvre revolves around Black American culture, the history of slavery, and ongoing structural and physical violence against Black Americans. As Jafa put it in his 2003 text "My Black Death": "The central conundrum of black being (the double bind of our ontological existence) lies in the fact that common misery both defines and limits who we are. Such that our efforts to eliminate those forces which constrain also function to dissipate much which gives us our specificity, our uniqueness, our flavor by destroying the binds that define we will cease to be, but this is the good death (boa morte) to be embraced." This essential overview presents Jafa's best-known works, such as Love is the Message, the Message is Deathand its 2018 follow-up piece The White Album, alongside never-before-seen projects and essays by notable scholars. Filmmaker and artist Arthur Jafa(born 1960) grew up in Mississippi, where his lifelong fascination with found imagery manifested in his childhood hobby of assembling binders of photographs culled from various sources. As a cinematographer and director of photography, Jafa has collaborated with Stanley Kubrick, Solange Knowles and Spike Lee, among many others. His work on Julie Dash's 1991 film Daughters of the Dustwon him the Best Cinematography award at Sundance. At the 2019 Venice Biennale, he was awarded the Golden Lion for The White Album. Jafa lives in Los Angeles.

Book African American Foreign Correspondents

Download or read book African American Foreign Correspondents written by Jason Berry and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1970s, Louisiana a state long known for outrageous politicians has witnessed a blossoming of the arts and their enthusiastic reception by a national, and even world-wide, audience. From John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces to James Lee Burke's detective Dave Robicheaux; from singers Fats Domino and Aaron Neville to jazz patriarch Ellis Marsalis and his music-making family; from George Rodrigue's blue dog to Chef Paul Prudhomme's transcendent cooking the list is long for Louisiana talent. Louisiana Faces documents in images and words the human texture of this remarkable renaissance, not only the painters, sculptors, chefs, musicians, poets, and writers who create the art, but also the ordinary people who in their daily and seasonal rhythms inform that art. Some are living legends, others well-kept secrets; all have a place, and a face, at the feast. Philip Gould confirms his own part in the renaissance with the 125 stunning portraits in Louisiana Faces. Gould's lively, poignant photographs capture a range of personalities in timeless settings that mirror the larger culture whether masked riders in a Cajun carnival or jazzmen playing a street funeral. Writer Jason Berry complements Gould's images with a probing, witty essay that explores the parallels between art and life. Using meld of interviews, anecdotes, history, and commentary, Berry treats outsized political figures and pop culture celebrities as a parade of inspiration for Louisiana artists.

Book excerpt: An all-new collection of paintings and sculpture by art legend Robert Williams. First exhibited at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in early 2015, the work in this oversized, hardcover exhibition catalog is accompanied by insightful essays by the artist. --- "The current international capitol of artistic sophistication is New York City. Ever since the end of the Second World War, every small city in the United States that has an art community has looked to New York for cultural parenting. However, an interesting anomaly has developed over the years. "Sophistication," like any other folkway, travels slowly with misinterpretations happening along the way. By the time high culture reached the West Coast it had traded its Brooks Brothers suit for cut-offs, a Hawaiian shirt, and flip-flops. Art on the West Coast, as much as it tries to maintain blue blood affectations shows mutations. It just doesn't have the aloof adroit coldness the Eastern Seaboard art society seems to portray." - Robert Williams, from his introduction to Slang Aesthetics
